I have a customer who states that the 62 reissue Fender P-bass with US pickups does not deliver the 'growl' that he expected from a Precision. Musky Posted March 9, 2008 Share Posted March 9, 2008 I always used to refer to the Precision's growl, until people started calling the Jazz's characteristic sound 'growl' in the early nineties. So then I just started using the word 'grunt' to describe the p bass. It's just a matter of semantics really. Can't help with the jap 62 RI with US pickups though - I've not tried it. Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted March 9, 2008 Share Posted March 9, 2008 My 90s MIJ '62 sounds like a precision should, it does the Jamerson sound with plenty of low-end punch, however my US '81 precision, although still sounding like a precision, sounds very different as it does have a certain growl. I suspect this may a lot to do with the heavy ash body (which makes the bass a bit of a boat-anchor) and one-piece maple neck. Both basses A/B tested with TIJF344 strings. Some individual basses respond very well to playing around with strings, gauges as well as makes and coverings..... try some more befor eyou give up, the ones that are on it may just not suit it! I sold it back to the original owner because a) he missed it badly and b) it sounded almost identical to my US HW1 P so I couldn´t really justify keeping it. I still have my maple board 57RI MIJ. Fliplowe Posted March 9, 2008 Share Posted March 9, 2008 I think the sound most people have in there head when they talk of a Precision "growl" is any reasonable P-bass put through an old Ampeg Svt with 8x10's overdriven slightly, without that sort of configuration that sound just aint gonna happen, as thousands of pounds spent on various amps & equipment over the years will testify, in fact bizzarely the closest I've come to that sound is with my old Roland Db-500 combo using my 78 p-bass. Wicked sounding amp, totally unreliable though! Those Jap basses are great & they are very often better sounding (& I really do believe better made) than the American equivalents imho (certainly of recent years) The Jazz bass pickup configuration certainly offers far more "growl" than a precision, as I really proved to myslelf at rehearsal today while playing a borrowed Jazz bass & I'm usually an out and out P-bass fan, different horses for different courses etc. I think maybe your customer is just being a tad fussy & wants to change it. Having got it it sounds more like the p basses I hear on the radio than the US S1 Pbass they were trying to sell me in soundcontrol at the same time. go listen to the track Jenna at www.myspace.com/retrochamps its my old band. I have a Jap 75RI, and to be honest its the only bass I play at the moment! I love it, built quality is fantastic and plays like a dream. I tried out a standard US model the other day and way totallt unimpressed compared to my RI. Also as they are not expensive basses, I dont feel too worried about some chav knocking it over when bombarding the stage at one of my residencies. (Oceana clubs are a nightmare!). Im taking mine on a cruise to abuse it for 4 months, and im positive it will be great. Unless you can afford the real deal (a good one at that), then I totally advise anyone to buy one!!! jazzbassmm Posted March 18, 2008 Share Posted March 18, 2008 Hi to everyone I have got today from guitaremporium.co.uk the Fender Precision Re62 and I am really happy with it, the sound is great and everything on the instrument is perfect I have only changed the original strings with a set of D'Addario Half Round 45-100 Long and i have changed a bit the action because was too high, the bass is perfect the sound is really warm like i was hoping the colour is wonderful.... 100% a classic Precision sound! 100% Happy!!
