Aguilar cabs........an opinion please.

Hi guys and girls,
I've copied this from the normal amps section, since people selling Aggy cabs might well have a valid opinion too.
Nick Owen here - I've never really said hello. I used to work in the Wapping Bass Centre back in the day and I mostly play for a living nowadays although I'm still embroiled in the MI industry part-time.
I need a few opinions please; I've had pretty much all the best known gear over the years; Trace SMX, Hartke, SWR, Boogie, Eden and for the last 15 years have been well into my Ashdown. I still get it supplied for tours with an 810 but for my own band I've most recently been using an Aguilar AG500 with a Bag End S-15B and an Ashdown 4x8, both reconed with Neo drivers.
The thing is, it's time to upgrade my cabs and I'd like to go Aguilar.
I'm quite into compact, I do like a 15", I'm not a massive fan of tweeters but I'm open to suggestions. It's gotta be Chocolate Thunder!!
I was thinking DB410, a 212 or 112&112NT or even just getting a single 15.
I used to love my old Henry 8x8", I thought the old Hartke 410XLs we're killer too. My Bag End's beautifully voiced but it's a shade quiet.
I don't mind a single cab; it's just gotta be clean and round sounding.
Anyone got a strong feeling about the Aggys?
Thanks in advance.
Nick

Hey Nick
I've used countless different kinds of amps too and have never been happier with my sound than when I got around to getting my DB410. It totally sings for both electric and upright.
Sadly, I'm having to sell my DB410 due to reason explained in my thread here.
I'm selling it for less than half of the RRP and it's not even a year old.

I own a GS112 and have played most of the Aggy range of cabs and heads, and I have to say that I love them all!
Super versatile, they look KILLER (especially the white hot stuff) and they sound gorgeous.

If you look at the LONG list of Aggy players, I think that gives you a great idea of what the Aguilar sound is all about (and also a GREAT recommendation)

If you're going to splash the cash, you won't regret paying for Aggy gear IMO.

Hi Nick, you sold me my Boogie 400+ and Road Ready 2x10 cab about 15 years ago!!

I never thought I'd be able to tell you anything about bass gear!! Anyway, Aguilar cabs sound great and I'd still be using them if they weren't so heavy! They don't do Neo. I had the GS112's but the DB112's are supposed to sound better. If I had more muscles I'd definitely try a DB410.

I'm now using Bergantino. You should try them. They're a different tighter sound but still capable of a deep, full punchy bass tone.

Aguilar Cabs are possibly the best I've ever used.
They are on the heavy side, but not impossible, just reassuringly solid.
I have x2 Choclate Thunder coloured DB112's, and the DB series are said to be the best, haven't tried a GS.
Fantastic range of sound, one has a tweeter.
I play in a Wedding covers band, but also do a Bon Jovi tribute, and these cabs can handle the sweet upper registry stuff, and the deep down and ballsy rock, especially with the 2 channel AG500, the overdrive sound is fantastic.
Only upgrade I might consider is x2 2x12's, to power home the rock even more.
I can honestly say this set up is better than my old Marshall DBS system, and I loved that.
So give 'em a shot, these light weight cabs for me are a nonsense, have had a few, and for me they don't hold down the Bass that well.

Hey Nick,

A year ago when I was after a new cab I tried few top ranges.GS410 was one of the best sounding cab i've ever played.Quite heavy but worth to get one.I can imagine how terribly good combination would be an 8ohm GS410 with a GS 212 or a 115.Don't hesitate if it's an Aguilar!
Good luck

Hi nick

I use 2 GS 112NT cabs that i bought from alex at the gallery with a DB750 head. They're great as you get the bottom end aswell as the mid thump! And they're extremly light! Great cabs all round really. The DB are voiced very differently. You really need to A/B them. Hope all is well!

Hi Nick

To add my opinion, I used an Aguilar set up - head/2x10/1x15 - at a gig abt a month ago, and to me it had no "ooommpphh", sounding very thin indeed.

However, through the pa system it sounded great with all the other bands, so maybe in a smaller venue on its own, it would have filled out. I just couldn`t get a sound that I was happy with using it.

Hi Nick

You'll get this a lot but I can't not mention you sent a LOT of nice gear up my way in Scotland when I were a lad, including a fretless Steamer 5 with a unique knot in the neck :-)

I have two amazing Aggie rigs - a compact one in the UK and a bigger set up over in Europe, and they're VERY different.

AG500 with two GS112s (one with a tweeter).

DB750 with a DB212 & a DB115.

I now really just use the smaller rig for functions and club gigs. When I used it on bigger stages, the 112s sound amazing if you're within reach, but just didn't have the throw or spread even coupled with the DB750.
The GS cabs are slightly more midrange and 'clean' to my ears. The DB cabs look and sound a bit more vintage, to my ears! However, I'm using them with a valvey head so that'll add to it.

On some smaller stages I've used the 750 with the 2x12 alone and it performed like a deeply voiced 4x10.
The DB115 is the first 1x15 cab I've used in 15 years. It's a great sub. Tight too, nice low mids so great for mic'ing up.

I must admit, I'm not a fan of using the AG500 at high volumes. It just cannot compete with the DB750 and my opinions of these cabs are influenced by the power and voicing of these amps.

Hmm, in my (limited) experience, the DBs seem to have more of a mid-hump than the GSs... How strange! Love my GS410 though- brilliant piece of kit although I'm adding a 1x15 to get a bit more arse end out of it

I used an old Hartke 410 for donkeys and loved it, but have recently gone over to DB112s, one with and without tweeter. I get everything I used to get from the Hartke but with more depth; there's a chocolaty-ness to them that gets me over excited! I previously disliked tweeters but really like this one, I dial just enough in for the detail and leave it there. It takes two trips to the car now at gigs but they are more than manageable, and I'm a ten stone weakling. You can have yours in chocolate thunder as well, 'cos mine are tweed and the title boss is more than apt.

That could be true to my ears too Josh, but I've never played through the DB 1x12s :)

Hi Nick,

Just to say that during a 35 year GAS condition  - the 'only' cabs I ever missed, were my 2 x GS112's - nuff said!!
