I went out without my earplugs tonight

I actually lost my first pair but the replacements are a much better fit, they are so comfortable, and they seem to be even more effective as when I put them in at first the sound was so clear I had to check they were working, which they were, perfectly, I just couldn't believe how clear the sound was and how well they fitted.

I've got some Elacin ER-15's, simply the best £160 i've ever spent, worth every penny, but i've misplaced them at a gig i was working at, i think it was Hammy Odeon last week.
Gutted, especially as i'm out working on a couple of back-to-back tours starting this week, which leaves me no time to get any more.

:) :) :)
i finally got around to getting a set of earplugs. just went for the etymolic er-20's. will have their first try out later on tonight at practice. I look forward to finishing a gig without ringing ears.
well i have to say, i'm very impressed. They perform exactly how they say, the same sounds but quieter. except for the fact that my bass tone seemed to be alot more clearer and i could pick myself out of the mix alot better than without the plugs in. I did have to take the plugs out for a while at practice though because we where doing a nit of writing and i couldn't really hear what me or anyone else was saying.

Apologies for banging on about the Elacin ear plugs but the beauty of these ones is the filters work at any volume, so you hear everything, even at really low volumes, so you never need to take them out.

I keep mine on my keyring.

That way I've never not got them, whether I'm at work, or at a gig, or playing.

Whenever I think it may get loud I stick 'em in. I cannot stand ringing ears and consider myself lucky as hell to have got away with some of the dumb things I did to my hearing in my yoof!

I've got the ER20s and when I first put them in I thought they weren't working because everything sounded exactly the same. When I took them out to check, I found everything had been the same but just a lot quieter. Could even hear the birds singing in the garden.
this thread prompted me to finally get some protection sorted out. Pick up my HF-20 plugs on saturday :)
Just out of interest... why HF rather than ER?

Hmm the HF ones may be the ones for me. I don't want uniform frequency attenuation - I like my ER20s cos they get rid of some of the damaging high end caused primarily by crashing symbols in my immediate vicinity.

I've always been very sensitive to high frequencies my whole life so they may be the solution

My ER-15's have been the single best investment I've made in terms of musical equipment since I started playing. Every rehearsal and gig (playing or just watching) I go to, they come with me. I just wish I'd got them moulded on to a cord to minimise the risk of losing one.

As part of my day job we are required to undergo a full medial every 2 years, which includes a hearing test. To date my hearing is as good, or better, than all my work colleagues of a similar age, none of whom have been playing in bands for the last 20+ years. :)

They are a bit pricing but the quality of the filters is simply amazing, all the clarity and quality of 'natural' sound - without any of the ear-f***ing frequencies - a very sound investment indeed.

Do you have HF's or ER's looking at the blurb ER's look more suitable for Music situations?
Thanks for your input on this thread, I'm seriously considering this and these could be my next purchase!!!

No worries dude - my ears need protecting big time right now so I can't bear the thought of other people putting off getting a really high quality pair of plugs like I did - if I'd got them sooner my tinitus would probably be a lot less noticeable than it is now - it's not severe but IS there.

Anyway I'm sorry I think I posted the wrong link - the ones I have are the ER-15 Custom Protectors:

http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/index.p...&Itemid=121

I can't recommend them enough - it's money well spent and really doesn't ruin your enjoyment of playing live - you still hear a fully detailed sound - just at a sensible volume without all those killing highs and potentetially lethal lows... it's moeny well spent - seeing as you only get one pair of ears - and a serious earing aid can set you back £3K...

Hope that helps

Mike

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee was the sound I'd come home to every night after going to a gig in the old days of the 70s and 80s. I remember once going to a gig at Erics in Liverpool to see Don Cherry, The Slits, and Prince Hammer. I remember seeing a couple of Rasta guys leaning with their heads in the bass bins. But when i even walked in front of them it was painfull, So heavy and loud were they when the reggae band were on. I dredd (ho ho) to think how those guys hearing is nowerdays.

I have perma-ringing, have had for over 20 years. I used to work for a PA hire company in the 'who cares about health and safety' time (which I still believe was better, but I digress). Every gig one of us stuck our head in the big martin bass bins to make sure they were working. They were not at full power, maybe 50%, and a mere 1k each anyway. :) To be honest, personally I'd rather stick my head in a bass bin than walk directly in front of a powerful rig. The sub-bass from large bins is very open and is mostly large air movements at low frequency, it was waaaay less painful than mid or tops. There is no real technical knowledge backing this up, I just know which hurt more.

I can still hear everything, as far as I know. No frequency black spots, plus I can still hear dogs and such barking in the distance when others claim to not be able to. Over the years the ringing has become something I barely ever notice. Hopefully their hearing is no worse than mine.

It's time as well as volume related. If you're only subjected for a short while it has less effect. Although night after night who knows?

Ahh yes, of course, that makes sense. Well enough time to feel the air moving was plenty for me, a few seconds! Plus it was only maybe 2-3 times a week on average for about 6 months.. Maybe 20 seconds a gig total for all the bins, not too bad.

Still, anyone tempted to try, I'd advise against it! :)

Well here (no pun) we go.

Appointment booked for the 27th to take a looksee at the ACS range of ear protectors. Consultant chappy is suggesting the ER25's, I'm just a tadge worried it'll block out too much and wonder whether the ER15's are more suitable, but I guess I will find out soon enough.

I'll have one ear defender and one in ear monitor, so we'll see how that goes!!!!

Anyway my future hearing thanks everyone who has contributed to this thread!!!!
