1. 500w may seem overkill but when you only have 1 speaker you need that power, but of course it's pointless if the cab can't keep up. With your budget the market is your oyster. I will suggest eitger an Markbass head and cab, a Gens Benz head, or a barefaced cab.
2. Always wanted to get me hands on a L 1000 but hardly come up and when they do they are in dream land dealer prices. Leo Fender's designs did get better as he moved on. Is there a jazz shaped bass with 2 MFD single coils? P.S why don't you have a readily available gallery of your crazy contraptions, ou7shined?
3.
I like to blend compressed clean with a tube screamer type pedal, jazz bridge pickup, played hard! You just have to boost the high mids loads. I used to use a guitar amp in combination with my bass amp to acheive that.
This. I have a tube compressor on one channel mixed with a dirty channel with bass cut a fair bit. And a 1khz boost. Talkbass thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f28/tim-commerfords-setup-484295/ Can't link since in on my phone.
4. Not sure what you are asking in regards to the second question. For me personally the price is a bit steep for an east asian built bass, but looks good none the less.
5.
i used to use a similar sound to the evil empire bass tone in an old old old band, i used my jazz bass (bridge pup solo) into a sansamp RBI (later swapped out for an Ampeg SVT II) i did have the old guv'nor for a while too but never used it with my ampeg. but my jazz bass into the ampeg SVT II non pro could sound exactly like the Evil Empire normal tone.
Yeah I get very close to Evil Empire sounds with my jazz and a parrallel effects chain, with an OD on one side. Battle of LA and Renegades are easy too if I have seprate EQ for each clean and dirty channel and a Wah. Rage's debut album is easiest to get close too as it's either clean or dirty on a Stingray. There is a talkbass thread that should cone up in Google searchs. It goes into great deal about everything, although he has customised his amps and pickups etc. But with out being that pedantic you can get close enough. His live sound after evil empire is really crap though. Not heard a live set where it sounds anything like the recording.
6. D'addario by far just because of the price and last an age and do sound great, but I've moved on to the balanced nickelwound now. Plus the coloured ball ends look nice. Was a big DR user for ages, but never had a set that lasted any great length of time, and after having more than several packs with dud E strings it put me right off. Sound great when they are first on but after a while sound just like any other string. As I said above been using nickels for a while, have a better feel and a less sharp tone.
7. Bump After 4000 views I'll withdraw.
8. Up for a feeler as I have brought a fretted neck is my fretless neck from a CIJ non export Jazz that I got from jimbobothy, these are his pictures and a little blurb since ive only had it since sunday and its not changed. if he minds I'll remove them and do my own. Price is negotiable as I have no idea how to price such a thing.
Whilst the inserts were installed one of the machine screws now used was inserted in too far when checking the thread and by chance the particular hole chosen was not blind but had clearance to the underside of the fingerboard. The screw then pushed onto the board causing a small split along one of the fretlines (see photo) and in the epoxy coating. I did check with Jon Shuker about this and he suggested using some very thin superglue to glue it. I haven't done this yet as in use I find it plays fine as it is.
I may keep it yet, incase I want to put it to original and resell. does feel really good and give some mwah, played with rage and it bits enough to sound fretted too. No real bite marks from strings either. Price includes postage. Stephen
9. Pretty quality instrument as standard, benifits from a string change and a setup. Only other things I'd suggest is electronics, pickups as fine but a better passive circuit or even an active one can add to the bass, pickguard as desire.
10. I've done a lot of pickup swapping in my time, and personally the only difference is between ceramic and alnico also whether or not they gun cancel when solo'd. Is your pickup height set low, that cab cause a bass to be 'quiet'. Even low output pickups can be just as loud as hot output as your input gain should be adjusted as required. Output is not the be and end all. The fender CS 60s are nice, but too pricey, but if you have cheap bass with cheap ceramic pickups they are a good upgrade. Not hum cancelling. Delanos with the big single magnets in are great, cab achieve the wiedest variety if sounds. My personal preference at the minute is to Dimarzio Model Js. Ceramic and have a nice bit of bottom. Basically split could in jazz casing. Also the pole pieces are individually adjustable to accommadate radius fingervoards. Sound like a jazz should I guess. The biggest differences should be in strings and EQ. Want to sound like jaco? Back pickup and lots of high mids. Want Marcus Miller? Both pickups on full and lots of top end. Done.
11. The market is slow. Bass is now on eBay and Gumtree. Will accept reasonable offers.
12. Bump. Posted with hardcase now.
13. I wouldn't worry too much about what others think of your bass. They are rather specific criticisms too, so I'd wager they were just being mardy. As long as you love it that's all that matters it's your bass, not everyone else's.
14.
Why not swapping necks with the fretless? Are they the same dimensions? I would be interested... bump for a very nice unusual finish
No, the USA one is a 22 fret neck like a deluxe I think rather than a standard 20 fret neck. So I could swap, but neither will intonate correctly. Plus I like to operate a one in one out system, can't play two at the sane time.
15. This time tomorrow will be on eBay
16. Brought a Jazz bass from JIm, great guy very honest and a pleasure to deal with, sets basses up really well too. It's a shame he uses rotosound strings seriously though, great bass, fantastic price, better than what I could have gotten in any shop. Very pleased.
17. The accuracy of CNC machines these days. I would argue that something a but more expensive will last a fair bit longer, abd the hardware on those cheap Epiphone to me is rather soft. Also I hate with a passion the 3 point bridge.
18.
The same "community" that has sold me knackered gear in the past & then used the old "well it was fine when it left me" line to wash their hands of all responsibility. I've been f***ed over for best part of £1000 on here so don't anybody dare have the nerve to talk to me about the noble community spirit that this forum has when it comes to buying & selling stuff.
You sound like a girl who gets cheated on and brands all men scukbags
19. Neither, find what's best for you. I actually use mine in a parrallel loop. Sounds mint.
20. Looks ace, not too glossy nd not dull or Matte. Great find.
