1. There's loads, but at the moment its Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. Rediscovered it recently and can't get enough of it. Its that riff and vocal delivery. Cool as ya like!!
 2. Not very free when it costs a tenner. Also i think it would have been about £15 too much to watch that shower!
 3. When i was younger i got tendonitis (sic) a couple of times thru over playing, and probably bad technique at the time( i used to proper twat the the strings). It bloody hurt and made me sort it out!
 4.
Yeah, he's different, and not as weird as some of you lot. He's just having a good time. Good luck to him.
Right on
 5.
I do read, but when you get sat infront of a piece of music that is written in treble clef, above the maximum range of the standard bass guitar because the "composer" thought that is how bass is notated past the 12th fret, you have to act pretty fast. In this case, it was an emergency session which i was called to do the day before the gig (i imagine the other guy dropped out when he saw the bass part!) but luckily the MD just told me to follow the style directions and play along to the chords written above. Needless to say, the ability to improvise stylistically came in VERY useful on that gig, and a few others like it. All I'm saying is, it's not as black and white as IT'S COMPLETELY POINTLESS, or IT'S BLOODY BRILLIANT. I imagine you already know this though, and are just winding people up for the fun of it
Couldn't agree more! The amount of session gigs were i've been given friggin PVG or piano parts or parts written in treble clef is unreal. This is for proper gigs aswell playing theatres like manchester opera house and venues of the like. You do have to adjust. Luckily for me i'm arrogant and single minded and do what i want including the dreaded improvisation, but use my skills and experience to fuse it so it fits. (apart from on one occasion where i kept slipping the welcome to the jungle riff into a song).
 6.
Thanks Ched.
I think the irony in my post has has been missed!
 7. For me, playing devils advocate is for pompous tits who convince themselves its entertaining!
 8.
Is there a point? Unless you play jazz I can't see one. The occasional inspired extra note here and there, sure, but studying improvisation on a bass!?! It seems ridiculous. Learn to cook instead, it's much more useful and pleasing for other people. It sounds like a recipe for cheating your audience to me. Only musicians will feel any "magic" happening, and that magic will be VERY rare. The audience won't get it anyway, and why not compose something beautiful in the first place. For me, improvisation on a bass is for jazz and pompous tits who convince themselves it's entertaining. I wish they would realise NO-ONE GIVES A sh*t. EDIT: I mean in a live setting.
Surely the majority of the audience won't be listening to the bass anyway, unless there are bass players there, so its irrelevant as long as you're not ruining the tune.
 9. I think the whole less is more/ restraint argument is a load of old bollocks. It completely depends on what you are playing. Sometimes stuff needs more not less and if you don't play it you are compromising the music. Conversely, if you are shredding over a piece that doesn't need it you are a tosser and ruining the music! obvious i know, but when people say less is more its like a mantra but it don't apply to everything!
 10. I like listening to the sound of cats in wheelie bins!
 11. I cannot believe people would think AVH is a bad drummer. He's regarded as one of the best. All ya gotta do is listen to VH1 and 2 to know that. Their music was unique at the time. 1 and 2 are perfect rock albums. Granted sammy hagar period was bollocks but with David Lee they were legendary. MA playes perfect basslines for the songs on all there stuff. definitely JPJ inspired. I read an interview years ago where he said it. he also said he spent ages learning The Lemon Song note perfect. Anyone who can play that note perfect has to be pretty handy.
 12. Oh yeah, how could i forgot the big one. I sing in a ridiculous piss take band (hence the avatar and username), that writes songs about bizarre or disgusting themes. One of them is about masturbation that includes a line about walking in on your parents having sex. My mother turned up to a gig we were playing and cme to the front whilst i sang the song. That w as quite embarrasing. Here it is if your interested
 13.
I always thought he got overlooked next to Slash, and really liked some of the playing he did with the Ju-Ju Hounds after G n' R.
Plus, he wrote GNR's best tunes
 14. Fell over cut my hand open on a pint glass. Smashed my bass up and split and bent the headstock with two tunes left. Played Jump and Living on a prayer in a covers band insulted other bands by hitting on their girlfriends (didn't Know) Had to propped up against a wall to play a gig has had been on 48hr bender (not so legal). God knows how i did!
 15. Drums- Terry Bozzio Bass- Jaco Pastorius Guitars- Jimmy Page/Steve Vai Organ/Keyboards- Jon Lord Vocals- Freddie Mercury Think this band would Rock and be a little extravagant, but smart enough to find ther own place. Oh yeah and extremely powerful but with good tunes.
 16.
Klaus Meine - Vocals Izzy Stradlin - Guitar JJ Burnel - Bass Keith Moon - Drums Probably wouldn't go all that well together, but I love all their styles. Plus it'd be great to see a resurrected, zombie Keith Moon play the drums
Izzy bit is genius
 17.
Hak, hak, hak, bluewwww. I haven't ate carrots for days....and there they are!
You'd think he'd be able to play in time after all these years
 18. I think Chickenfoot are horrific. This may be due to being a massive Van Halen fan of which Hagar ruined. It just sounds like them trying to outdo VH, it seems false. I've only heard Vultures once. It sounded alright!
 19. Its genius! no matter how many times you see it.
 20. Its mad how this place buggers off on tangents. this thread is about pictures and somehow how gets to Homophobia. There are some hormones exploding round here!
 21.
Hooky was, and remains, a HUGE influence on me. His work on Joy Division's "Atmosphere", for example, is simply definitive. I can't imagine a better line for that song. I had to work out the bassline for U2's "All I Want Is You" last week - and pretty damn decent it is too. Some nice improvised bits, nothing overstated. Just right I would say. I think many understimate the talent of bass players like those I mention above; to survive in a group for so long in a very tough business they must be doing something right.
"I tell you folks It's harder than it looks It's a long way to the top If you wanna rock 'n' roll"
Some of my proudest moments in bass playing have also been the simplest. Jennifer
i agree with that (about Clayton). Tho Clayton ain't the best i think some of his basslines are pretty cool. 'New Years day', Mysterious ways, Bullet the blue sky. also with The Edge tossing it off with all is 'clever guitar bits. He had to keep the bass simple. Like Mike Anthony in Van Halen, he didn't have much choice but to pedal
 22.
Not even the music
Exactly
 23.
He has shagged a lot of women, to be fair. They're obviously not interested in his playing.
Not one aspect of kiss was about the music
