Replacing drivers and ohmage issues...
Bobby K replied to Boy Thunder's topic in Repairs and Technical
be careful about just sticking any old speaker into a cab and expecting it to work OK. Cabinets are designed for specific speakers, the size of the cabinet is directly related to the frequency response to bring out the best in the speaker it is designed for. If you put something different in there the sound will be... different - and highly likely to be bad. e.g. the original speakers frequency response tails off below 50Hz, so the cabinet designed with a resonant frequency of 40Hz to compensate. Then you go and stick a speaker in there with a better low frequency response )doesn't tail off until 30Hz) and you get a cab that makes you sound loud boomy when you play one note and virtually inaudible when you play another. (this is a simplified example to get my point across - its more complicated than this in reality!) You might be lucky and get hold of a speaker with a similar response to the original. But if you're replacing speakers in Cabs replace with the same if you can. I found this out the hard way. now I have £200 worh of speakers boxed in my loft
I hear you mate; I've found out the hard way too it seems.... Just bought a Celestion BN15-400X to go in my Trace 1215 combo. The same as this one: http://basschat.co.uk/uploads/monthly_02_2009/post-2899-1234974845.jpg The resulting sound was underwhelming, to say the least The cab space in the combo is tiny really, as you can see, so I'm blaming the resulting sound on the fact that this speaker enclosure is far too small for the Celestion to work properly. Or, perhaps my combo's amp section (200 watts) is under-powered for the Celestion?? I dunno.... Maybe somebody could enlighten me...? Mr Fitzmaurice, are you there.....?? I wish I'd done a bit of research first The BN15-400X will be appearing in the for sale section here shortly anyway, for anyone that's interested. Still in as new condition -
There will be more next year Dean One more gig in Leeds this Thursday at the O2 Academy. Martin, it was great to meet you at the Manchester gig; you'll be pleased to know my shoulder is much better now (was in agony at the gig!!)

Hello all Any idea where I could get hold of some of these, the L shaped bits of metal that hold the drivers in on Trace cabs (circled in pic) - No sign of them on British Audio Service... Has anyone got any going spare...?

Adam is a total gent to deal with. I've just traded Yamahas with him and it was a smooth transaction throughout. He was even gracious enough to offer my hard case back to me! This is the type of BC'er we all want to deal with Hope to do business again, cheers Ad

This programme was excellent!! Some of my favourite music of all time. Definitely cool to see Joe osborn, the genius behind the scenes. Just when I was beginning to question the need for a telly, given all the crap that is broadcast, something great like this comes on

Give me a shout if you need a hand with it. I did used to play it in standard tuning before I found out about the tone up thing. It can be done but is probably a bit Easier in the F# tuning. Medium gauge strings make tuning up a tone a lot easier, as there is less tension.

Nice one. Always good to meet other BC'ers!
Wish I had your job! You doing any gigs in Manch?
Yeah, as I always say, it's a privilege to play these songs! We're on tour at the moment and play The Ritz in Manchester on 26th of this month, doing the whole of the QUEEN IS DEAD album, as well as a set of other Smiths stuff.

Andy (Rourke) played his bass a tone up (F#) back in the day. So the opening F# note is on the 2nd fret of the D string, if that makes sense? I play with a Smiths tribute and take two basses out with me, one tuned a tone up, for this and most of the other older songs and one tuned in standard tuning. "miserable" is one hell of a bassline! The double stop chords towards the end of each verse are awesome. (the "why do I give valuable time" section etc)

Yours was the one with the EMG on it wasn't it Garry? I was considering yours before I came across this beauty on ebay. It's tough letting go of some basses innit, they're like ex girlfriends; but sometimes you're glad to see the back of them! :-)
