1.
CAREFUL!! Just because you ar feeling a bit un-challenged and maybe a bit bored with your bass at the moment, that is not to say that 3 months down th eline you really miss the bass and realise that it wasn't the fault of the bass at all, maybe you just have bad GAS or sometimes you need to remind yourself how your bass sounds in a mix, or a band situation. Sometimes I will go for days and days without touching a bass because I just don't feel like it. If I do pick up a bass when I am not really in the mood I think I could easily start fiddling and wondering if I can justify something else. Take your time and start saving! I hope you like your new job BTW. ped
Thanks Ped sir! It's not to say I don't like my Corvette, far from it, love the tones I can get, I think it must be down to a mixture of GAS and the general Not-In-The-Mood-To-Play-ness all culiminating together, it should subside soon but I'd still lvoe a 6 or 5 string right nowe or a Thumb 4 would be spiffing!
  2.
Well if you want to nick CK's gig I guess you are gonna have to get a Smith 6. Its a long way from Somerset mind. I would be inclined to try and join some other musicians again.
I'd love Kiwi's Smith but I've only just got a new job as of yesterday, it's not to say it out of the question but it would take me about 4 months to get £2000 but I know I'll find another one or something similar, or it may be I'm desperate to get my hands on a Thumb bass because I know I can now afford one. I'd love to join some musicians and I have jammed with soem guitarists privately so I've been able to try out what I can now do and see what eneds improving etc...But it's hard to find the right people down here.
  3. Check out the first album man, simply titled The Yellowjackets, every song is pure cheesey American Chat show music but it's so good you can't help but smile, and Jimmy Haslip is by far one of the most underrated bassists out there!
  4.
Might be something simple like dead strings? - but don't let buying a new set of strings put you off buying a new bass hamster
Ahhh I just put on a newish set of DR's from my old 5 string and have a nice newness in both feel and sound to them, not to zinggy but still nice when slapped etc... All the right gauge as well so I don't think it has anything to do with that.
  5.
Are you gigging or playing at home?
Playing at home man, I've been working on myself since I quit the last band I was in a good 8 or months ago now, it's paid off but as ARGH said I think I am needing something else to muck around with, thats not to say I know everything to do on 4 strings far from it, but it would be nice to have the extra range to noodle with and lately I've been watching loads of 6 string gospel players, all playing Ken Smith 6 strings and seeing Kiwi's may have sparked something. After some adjusting to both my settings and the bridge pick-up again last night I've finally gotten comfortable again but I think I'm longing for a 5 or 6 string or may be just an odd few weeks.
  6. Evening All, Lately I've found myself to not be getting along with my Corvette, for a good long while up until recently I've been able to play it happily and not have change very much at all, but lately I'm constantly chaning the bridge pick-up height almost everytime I've played in the last 3 weeks and constantly tampering with the action on specifically the D and G strings. Just to clarify, as I said the bass has been playing fine but then it just felt a little too easy and I just couldn't get comfortable like usual so thats why I went ahead and adjusted everything, but nothing seems to feel right (Even if I get the set-up back to the way I had it prior to adjusting it). I'm wondering is it a sign for me to move on and find another bass to take my playing that bit further? Is it GAS related? Or is it something that bit more sinister?
  7. Being one of the previous owners I can happily say this bass is great and can do just about anything you'd want it to, and also to say Simon is a legend and a great guy to deal with!

    Spector basses

The Euro I had was a fantastic piece of craftmanship and as JD1 said the output is huge, thanks to the TonePump which has replaced the Aguilar preamp as of late.
  9. For me it's Ken Smith basses, they sound so damn good but the style of them is odd and unique but I do find myself oddly drawn to them, especially Kiwi's.
  10. Funk-Metal is my main preference but I'll do just about anything if asked. And of course groove-laying is a favourite.
  11.
Hey Josh .. I'd like to know this too .. Can you edit the thread title to say "Move on up" who done it? May get more response? Cheers OG
Edited for you sir!
  12.
I have to agree the Bill Dickens left me wondering what he was going on about. I thought his playing was far from clean and accurate, not to mention a million miles from musical. Marcus is of course a supreme funker and exudes soul from his playing, however Josh I think you're wrong about Victor; I think it's a common perception if all you do is see him on internet sites like Youtube doing the flashy stuff, but go and see him live (as I was lucky enough to do in Glasgow earlier this year) and you'll realise he is the master musician with absolute monster groove.
I never said a bad thing about Wooten's sense of Groove man, his is second to none and I have greatly enjoyed the videos of him when he is just holding the groove, it's just that sometimes when he solos he tends to over uses Double Thumbing and comes across as a noise but when he is holding a groove with Double Thumbing it sounds great and Wooten is one with the groove. I was just addressing his use of Double Thumbing isn't to everyones taste, never questioned his abilities at holding a groove
  13.
After seeing a few Woot vids,I have to agree, though Its actually Bill Dickens thats made me try it. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kyUCOeUTM7E It is a bit mental. this is tasty,What cant all slappers be this tasteful. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=NHdN_O5k3WM&...ted&search=
Miller to me is the essential slap bassist, easily. He has so much soul running through all of his grooves and his playing is just so clean and your hooked on each note, and he's also educated very throughly in Jazz and utilises that knowledge to come up with some great licks. Opposed to King, Wooten, Flea (Who?...), and all the other well-known slappers, Miller will always be the one I will be amazed by, simply because he never over indulges and plays for the song each time.
  14. I've finally got the hang of it, I just went ahead and tried after I saw this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DDuK6nmdAB8 Oddly enough I've seen all the other videos for Double Thumbing and they never helped, but that little 19 sec clip made everything easier and I'm getting quite familiar with how it works but I won't over indulge my self with it. And also just a side note I prefer Miller's soulful appraoch as opposed to Wooten's at times OTT use of Double Thumbing.
  15.
I have known for at least the past year the huge finanicial problems they have. I know the Bristol SC's manager and a freind of his. Basically yes your all correct, SC has expanded too quickly and failed to realise that unlike supermarkets who get loans to expand where 100% of the population needs food. Music shops are unfortunatly not the same less then 1% of the population are musicians, They took loan after loan and bought out a number of companys and they just cant pay back their debts. We thought they would have gone tits up last summer but have somehow managed to hang in there. The Bristol one is usually quite busy And with relatively good salesman (The reason i say salesman is because they only hire based on how well you can sell a product, Not how much you know about it). Expect a decent sale at somepoint.
The Bristol SC has Ben Baptie (Quite tall and with Dreads), he will make you cry just looking at him, but actually is so helpful and is genuinely interested in helping and he is a damn good musician allbeit a guitarist, he know's enough about basses to sell them better than the guy who's supposed to be in charge of the bass section who has a nasty habbit of tuning the basses in Drop C.
  16. They all look like some kind of crushed piece of fruit, but sound suprisingly good.
  17. The only thing I think of when I look at that is Mr. Zender!
  18. Bass: Ryan Martinie or Dirk Lance Drums: Stewart Copeland Guitar: Not too sure to be honest... Vox: Brandon Boyd It would be a rather interesting mix of genres but at the middle of it all they are slaves to the groove, the rhythm section that is, Brandons just the tightest singer live.
  19. And the new single is a semi-cover as well, and has Patrick Stump singing again.
  20. Just stumbled across these 2 videos on the 'tube: Part 1: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MhWPZWCImxo Part 2: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KazZykV24-k&...ted&search= Alot more bassists compared to the Bass Day 2006 version, and some players I'm un-familiar with but anyhoo enjoy!
Did u end up with Chris or Jules ? .....didn't wanna stay at Bridgy! ...other work came up with less red tape involved... (& better dosh!) Good to hear u lovin' the groove!.... "everythang is on the ONE!" .... u knows it make sense! let us know of any gigs u doin', dude...
Had Jules in the end so it was mildly bareable, if I was given Chris as I told you I just would walk out of his lesson. It sucked that you didn't coem back, I had told all the enw bassists coming on the course to look foward to having lessons with you and for us to find out you weren't coming back did russtle some feathers. "...Ain't nothing but a party baby" got to love Bootsy! And when I eventually find the band I'm after and we ever get gigging then you'll be one of the first to know man!
hi josh!..... how r u getting on?
Better than ever man! And trust me on this one, I'm not the bassist I was when you were teaching me, I'm basically a slave to the groove which was and is your main principle and it influenced me big time, and since you last saw me I've gone at least 3 high end basses which have all taken my playing further and since getting my Warwick I feel so comfortable in the pocket! But I'll say this, it would've been nice to have a Bassist teach me Grade 8 bass
A student of mine has this wem bass..... anyone ever seen one before?.... got any info ? sorry the pix are a bit sh*te!
All I'll say is Coxxy!!! And at college it's known as The Oar! But as Dave said it's horrible to play and sounds dreadful, but then again our college equipment dosen't help the matter.
  25. That'll be immense when it's done Mike, and now I can't wai tfor the first video you do with that beast!!
