2.
The original post - by a member of Basschat, asked fellow Basschat members - who we thought were overrated. Therefore, it's a question about our opinions here, not about the achievements of the bassists in question out there in the 'wider world'.. So IMHO, it's just a harmless way to pass the time and definitely not a way to start arguements..
Exactly man, this is purely on the basis of opinions and not fact and in no way did I intend for this thread to be one littered with the perpetual arguing which is now becoming all the rage. As I said I'm just interested to see what we all think. From the posts thus far, I get the impression that as bass players we give bassist's/or any muscians a great amount of respect, even if the player does not hit your eruption button. As opposed to the thread on the Pearl's drummer forum, which was more people all bashing the legends (Bonham, Moon, Baker and even Peart etc...) to aggrivate more than to state an opinion. Occasionally a sensible mind would write a post accepting all the opinions and admitting respect to them, and would thus be open to more flamming. Even for the few I think are "Over-rated" I respect greatly, Flea drives me up the sodding wall along with his army of Slap-a-likes, but he has built himself a great career, influenced countless bassists over the years and is still going strong, all you really can do is respect that As long as our opinions have an ounce of respect the less chance there is someone will take it the wrong way.
3. I saw this on a drum forum and saw some interesting posts, so I thought I'd try it here and see what we get. Remember now it's purely opinions For me: Flea Les Claypool Paul McCartney Cliff Burton

My Sex

Do you mind if I ask why you've still got the plastic over the p'up man??
5. A mix of the 2 for the initial "Muck Around" years. As for when I got serious (I.E when the pick dropped), I used (And still do regulary) one Jaco and one Billy Sheehan exercise (Not the 3 finger business!) to build strength and stamina and to gain impendance. I had compulsory lessons with Dave Savage (Our very own BottomFeed!) for the first year of my college course, which were great and all though it's only been in the recent year that his teachings have shown in my playing, I still learnt a great deal from Dave and will always be grateful. The second year at college.....well basically I'd have to tell my "Guitar" teacher what to teach me and how, every lesson. Since finishing college it's been very much using my ear to figure out songs I thought I knew and ones I thought I could never play, and just catching up on parts of my playing I should've worked on at the very start of college. But lately I'm practicing less frequently, but for the better. I have noticed vast improvements in my playing, in both soloing and grooving, all thanks to barely moving an inch of my original finger position. Basically my index finger misses the bridge pick up whereas my ring still glides over it.....it's so much more comfortable and the tone is exactly what I was after.

GONE!!
at that price it should have gone already! looks like a great bass, i had one just like it
Ohhh you did ! ! I can vouch for the Thumbs prior to 2000 due to playing a couple from last 3 years, and also playing a few mid to late 90's Thumb's also. The neck is much more agile and ohhhh so much smoother due to it being all Wenge as opposed to the chunkier Ovangkol Neck and Wenge Finger-Board on the newer models. And there IS a difference in tone, an all wenge neck brings much more brightness and warmth out of the overall tone whereas an Ovangkol neck makes it sound much darker yet still retaining that Warwick growl. But really these a quite different to the newer models, and for the price your getting a bargain! Good luck with the sale Ray!
7. Man that jazz is just sexy!! How well does it growl man???
8.
I saw him with Jill Scott and really wasn't impressed with playing or sound...but he's definately better in those vids.
How so Mikey?
9. Georgous Ken Smith man!
10. Ahh thats Sharay Reed! American Gospel Bass Players are by far the most influential and talented guys around, and for me will always make me dive for my bass as opposed to most solo players, great choice Richard! More bassist's from the same gig: Maurice Fitzgerald 1. Maurice Fitzgerald 2. Sharay Reed 2. And a personal favourite of mine, Dwayne Wright: DW 1. DW 2. DW 3. DW 4. And one more, Thurman Woods: The last fill is just amazing. They naturally know how to groove better than most
11. I'm quite shocked at how he managed to get that tone out of that Schecter, but nonetheless I like his playing but after a few listens it does sound like he could've held back a little.
12. I think they gave up the ghost because Sikth is primarily those 6 guys, take one (Or 2 as it was) of them out of that equation and it's not Sikth anymore, and especially when the band is of such a high calibre as well, hence why they were, nay, are still unrivalled today. As for being nice blokes, oh so very true besides Mikey, any and everybody I know who's met them have said he's always been the one no one can get near to talk to, ah well, where as Justin, when asked just out of curiosity if he could lay down a quick vocal track for a song by my friends band, he was more than happy to oblige: Skip to 9:12... Ah well at least their all staying busy musically and a reunion is exactly out of the question.
13.
I knew Mikee and Justin left, but I thought the rest of them stayed together...? Perhap the Dood can shed some light.
Well my friends band, Young Hollywood, recorded for Justin quite recently and really they got all the facts from him there and then and I'm pretty sure Sikth is over, Justin is still working with Dan and Pin as far as I'm aware.
14.
Dude, I forgot about Dirk Lance! Another big influence on me too!
I think you forgot Sam Rivers as well man.
15. But unfortunatley Sitkh are no longer together as a band so we can't get giddy over the thought of a new album And thanks to Gamble for mentioning AAF because Tye Zamora is heavily underrated between bass players, but if you can manage to see past the joke-like appearance of their videos and the song themes, listen to Tye's playing and tone and then you can hear he is a greatly talented player with a great melodic sense and feel for groove, also he is a great entertainer which I think alot of bass players lack, dare I say he's like The Rock of bassists. And luckily the original line up has just reunited aswell so hopefully theres a new album is in the works. As far as Martinie goes, Gambles right each album got less and less Technical but Ryan's tone seemingly just got better and better and his playing grew more tasteful IMO and he is one of the main influences alongside Dirk Lance on my style and I'm waiting on the new Mudvayne album as Dullboy was a good taster to see how his playing has changed further more.
16. For me I'm simply going to take 2 Warwicks and a Eden combo and leave the complete rig at home, simple, oh and about £15,000 to be safe.
17. Easy.... A Hetfield fan boy I be.
18. Am I right in saying that the first one is the exact same as Cliff's besides the black hardware? Looks pretty sweet with all black hardware man!
19. The same bass on the CS gallery, with all the specs. I love Warwick, no doubt, but I can't for one see nor hear the fuss about $$'s, having owned one as well, ah well horses for courses.
20.
Well, I may be misunderstood for this, but I'll try at least.. When I think of Basschat, I simply know that people love Fender's, a words called groove and jazz, Jamerson and so much other thingies, but..
You forgot Shukers aswell
21. That blows every Shuker I've seen out of the water. Absolutley stunning Mike!
22. Maybe because your playing the wrong way round
23.
lol That was a cracking amp, sounded huge with the 4x12". I think the Epifani and Aguilar comination I have now quench any amp regrets or GAS I may have....
It looks quite insignificant sat on the far side of my room glaring at the Eden rig
24.
This is the only bass I wish I still had.
But are you missing the Profet 4 now thats the question Mike
25. Ryan Martinie - Mudvayne Sam Rivers - Limp Bizkit Dirk Lance - Incubus (Incidentally, Dirk was the person who introduced Sam Rivers to Warwick basse's) Stuart Zender - Jamiroquai Tye Zamora - Alien Ant Farm Arif Mirabdolbaghi - Portest The Hero And a few who are not greatly known but are huge on the American Gospel scene and are a bigger influence on me than some of the ones listed above: Dwayne Wright Justin Raines Thurman "Peanut" Woods John King Maruice Fitzgerald Apart from the religous jargon I think Gospel Bass Players are by far some of the best around, and pretty much all of them use Ken Smiths!
