1. I have often listened to Shawn Lane and dreamed about being a guitar player. Mind you, there is no way I'd ever be as good as Shawn so I might as well just leave that idea on the shelf!
2. I would definitely go were I not miles away.
3.
my 23 year old !! 1989 thumb 6 which weighs a ton and doesn't balance too well but sounds and plays like a dream.. :-)
This is a real high point for this thread.
4. Also, take a pick incase the Jamerson hook sends your hand into spasm halfway through the set.
5. I'd say good. Okay, some punk music was awful, but it created a creative spirit that allowed electronic music to take root. A generation's ear had been turned away from pop sh*te and ended up focusing on things like Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and OMD. If we have nothing else to thank punk for, let us thank it for electronic music. Oh, and Big Country, who, in somewhat bizarre move, formed an amazing prog rock band from the ashes of the punk scene.
6. To quote a particularly dull argument, Jaco managed to create beautiful solos on a '21 fret' jazz bass. That said, there are a few things I can think of when I would like 24, and this is my preference. Mind you, I can make do with 23 frets like my Kubicki Ex Factor had, namely because most of the stuff I was doing on the upper most frets was stuff Stu Hamm had done on Kubicki Ex Factors before me! I must buy another Kubicki...
7. Stunning top wood.
8. Very nice, there have been a couple of these early walnut Thumbs on here recently.
9.
I love Power Windows and everything about it, including the bass sound. Starting to look like I'm very much in the minority.
It's probably my favourite Rush record...after Hold Your Fire!
10. Looks good! Howard has always been a fine craftsman.
11. Speaking of ridiculously low action, I remember a few people on Talkbass commenting on how they had played Jeff Berlin's Dean bass at trade shows and found it unplayable because the action was so low! He makes it look effortless.
12.
Is this experience or hearsay? Im surprised youve actually seen or played one of the 42 MK Fenders.
Hearsay, though I recall seeing some Level 42 board posts from MK diehards who had ordered them from Fender (lucky as it was a very limited run) and found them to be pretty lacklustre in their build. Tellingly, Mark used them for about 5 minutes and then went onto those GB basses, which sounded crap in fairness. (the Ohne Filtre DVD showcases this dire tone).
13. I had a Zoot fretless last year. It was very heavy, but the build quality was very good and it sounded good too!
14.
Have you considered something like a Zon? Would be very different to anything you already have and would give you all sorts of options for plain or fancy tops, nicely ergonomic bodies and a graphite neck.
Definitely worth looking into. I had a stunning Sonus last year (went back to Warwickhunt eventually, who had owned it before). It felt to me like the ultimate jazz bass and sounded that way too! Light, ergonomic body with a thin fast neck. Growly, modern 'jazz' sounds from the singlecoil pickups. Joe Zon designed it to be the new jazz bass for the 90's, and I think he has been successful in that aim!
15. Nice! It's a bit 'modern' for my taste, all squidgy sounding bass tones, and quick, scattered drum sounds. I prefer a bit more of that Depeche Mode vibe. As I have mentioned elsewhere, I've been jamming with the band over Depeche Mode tunes recently, with the keys player handling synth parts and me playing along and transcribing various parts to my bass whilst singing Dave's parts. It's actually really fun, I suspect with a synth module for my bass I could really stretch things out. Though I might just buy an old-skool synth to play on. Like an Oberheim Xpander...!
16. Phwoar
17.
Another of my favourite tracks is called 'Take for example this' from a Billy Childs album recorded in the late 80's early 90's. Awesome stuff. check out this video of JJ playing with Lee Ritenour, great groove and a very nice solo around 2.20. I love his bass sound it has a really zingy feel to it.
Lee always puts amazing bands together. Check this one out, Abe Laboriel on bass and Perry singing, absolutely amazing stuff.
18. Right, time to get the Depeche Mode back on.
19. Where is the ACG workshop now?
20.
I drive past the Jaydee workshop daily and it still amazes me how a scabby looking industrial unit can make some of the most famous basses in the world.
The last time I drove through Moffat I was surprised to see that I couldn't discern the ACG workshop. I would have thought they'd have a sign outside saying 'best basses in the British Isles made here'.
21. I look forward to seeing pictures of this, these are really good looking basses.
22. I love those little pop cuts on them too, nice feature!
23.
Some of you have seen this pic.....It is what I am into these days!!!
That pink mk3 is the one.
24. It reminds me of the Mark King Fender jazz basses. Only better, without the woefully bendy necks and shoddy fretwork!
25. Sandberg's California P basses should suit. Particularly the ones with a big humbucker at the bridge, to give that bass some bite!
