[/quote] Thank God! I've thought this for years, but never mentioned the heresy. I bloody hate drummers who 'play along' instead of 'propelling', it makes life difficult for the bass player as you have to do more than your fair share of propelling, which I resent as the result isn't greater than the sum of its parts (which it should be) and you inevitably end up being hung out to dry. If you have a 'play along' drummer AND a 'play along' bass player, you have a very sorry band indeed.

A Barefaced Big One would probably tick the boxes too, though they be out of production they turn up now and then for around £400. I had one for a while and it was very good indeed, but I got Schroeder GAS and that was that!

I'm sure a Berg would be a good score, but I know how you like to deliberate about these things. By the time you're ready to move on the 1212L I may be able to afford it.

This is one of the things puts me off a Ric... though McCartney played his with a pick and seemed to do OK. Obviously fingerstyle would be easier but it strikes me that a Ric is a real pick players' bass.

Bass frequencies are long and travel through the thickest walls and for a good distance. That's why when there's a party at the other end of the road all you can hear is a kick drum. Same when people have loud music on in a closed car. Whether you're an owner or tenant makes no difference to the person you're pissing off. I'm lucky enough to be able to make as much racket as I want to during the day, but I quite often get a hankering to play bass at 2 or 3 in the morning, so it's headphones or not bother. If you take time to get a decent sound through headphones (a decent pre helps), there's no reason not to use them. Take some powerful drugs and imagine you're doing an important take at Abbey Road or something, I don't know. But there's nothing worse than neighbour noise, I've moved a couple of times because of it.
