It was probably a new price for a later model. I had an early 90's Fenix Tele & it cost me £195 new then. The Fenix range had very good reviews & the early ones were made at the same factory for a while as the Squiers of the time. There's another Fenix thread on here somewhere. IIRc, the pickups were a bit microphonic & the frets were softer than you'd expect (possibly why yours was defretted?)

My Hiwatt has an after market XLR, that was done so that they could run the output straight to the sound desk desk without having to mic up cabs. At least on the OP's pics it's clearly marked what it's for.

Ex "name" amps don't attract same inflated prices as ex "name" guitars?
Big_Stu replied to Big_Stu's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hmm, yeah - I like "physical contact" idea; mojo rather than a tool. Funny that "wear & tear" on an amp is "road-worn" on an instrument, that could also be accounted by, bar a total Townsend type smash-up, a guitar is more maintainable in safe way & usable way than an amp.
One ex-Elton John Rolls Royce lost its subsequent owner money despite there being clear provenance.
Was there a reason for that? More prone to theft - insurance cover type thing? Or someone else, like myself, with a huge loathing of EJ? Though MG aren't mentioned, last I looked, it could be an inference that the provenance is hookie for that reason, that dodgy provenances are now known to be in circulation. Scarey thought that, in a few years - once MG are faded into history their legacy, mostly forged could well be accepted as genuine. -

Borrowed this link off Plexi Palace........... http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/19800/lot/198/ The more Hiwatt knowledgeable than me on PP are a bit doubtful of the provenance of this amp - an alleged ex Pink Floyd Hiwatt 200. But taking the sale at face value an ex big name band valve amp hasn't cost that much more than a bog standard 200 would. Why is this? if it had been Gilmour's own personal black Strat I would guess it would have cost an arm & a leg. Is it because amps are more prone to ageing badly; too cumbersome, too "old technology", not as iconic, not as specific to the user, what?

I had a Fenix Tele for a while (early 90s), with the non-contoured headstock, the year later there was a magazine review of it which showed the contoured headstock, so I'm guessing that's later. I was told about the Young Chang/Squier connection as I bought it too, but their version I was told was that Fender just took the contract elsewhere as they weren't happy that virtually identical instruments had varying prices.

Damn - this is happening more & more often, s'not fair! There's two large boot-sales near me but the best they generally offer is 1920s brass ornaments & tatty Matchbox cars.

Was it the amp or the cab that I fell in love with?
Big_Stu replied to stefBclef's topic in Amps and Cabs
I absolutely loved the sound I got from the bass rig and the whole band loved it too. We play reggae and the drummer who normally asks me to "Mek de bass more round man" just sat there drumming and sweating with a massive grin on his face....you know, the sort that is only caused by lovely, velvety smooth, fat, clean, round bass. It was like everybody could feel it under their feet, the way it should be.
Outside of the discussion that's a lovely bit of copy-writing; I'd come to see your band on the strength of that alone! Though you don't say what bass you were using? Not relevant to the question so much, assuming it was the same bass you usually use? -
Bass intros needed that are easily recognised

Just heard this again on the radio - couldn't find a contemporary video of it (BBC binned it apparently), but damn this bassist has stamina. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic8liuhxI1I -

Eh? What? Still not twice as bright! Or .......... is it? ........ and should it be wired in with speaker cable, or instrument cable?

Sounds like it could be different causes, with similar symptoms. All possibles; is the pot static constant or only when you move it? Same question with your jack? Constant crackling, & moving to different components sounds more like it could be an earthing problem, while only when you move it sounds like the sweepers in the pot are oxidising in which case the contact cleaner you're doing should fix it - tho' I've never had to do such a thing repeatedly as it sounds you are. Over time, depending on which type of jack it is, the hot contact (the bit the tip of the jack plug clicks against to contact) can give way thru constant plugging in & out. They can be bent back into place manually to increase the contact, but gently does it as you can crack the insulators at the bottom if you're too rough.

Keep an eye on the hire companies; I posted this in another thread a while ago but (admittedly of only one sale) I would recommend for eg. John Henry's of London. http://www.johnhenrys.com/ I bought my Marshall 2 x 15" off them for £75 delivered; only thing wrong with it was their name & codes being stencilled on the sides. As they say themselves, their stock is constantly changing.
Wood has arrived, only 6 days from it being posted in the US and no import duty or tax, on the down side I seem to have made a dtupid school boy error on measurements as it's not big enough for a bass
Depending on the shape you had in mind couldn't you have a contrasting border (walnut veneer, though I've got some medium oak that you're welcome to) around the body of an inch (remember them?) or so? I'm thinking......
Who would they accept valuations from? I've got certificates from Vintage And Rare that were ok with MG at the time.
I asked Vintage & Rare on the basis that MG surely wouldn't deny their expertise. Unfortunately V&G said they didn't know enough about John Birch to give a valuation. On sheer appreciation the last valuation figure I had off E&L (who took my word for it) had escalated to £4600, for which they charged £82 a year. They wouldn't cover it outside the house.

I know it's a guitar question, I'm very very sorry.

I once saw a tutorial on how to heat up a Jack Daniel's bottle& tap the neck off to get an authentic Southern slide..............y'all. -
I've heard good things about Music Guard, but they couldn't help me as they wouldn't accept valuations from anyone who was clued up enough to know what it was. I gave up on E&L insurance, who are huge in instrument insurance when I couldn't get any of them to answer the phone for a week.

What bass amp to replace a 70s WEM Dominator Mk1
Big_Stu replied to surfguy13's topic in Amps and Cabs
No problem; though stick around, there'll be others who can offer better guidance. also touring a few stores to try cabs out is all part of the fun. I do love the EB3, I had a '69 as my first bass in '79. FWIW Jimmy Lea of Slade used a Selmer T&B and an EB3 when he first turned pro & stuck with the EB3 until it was stolen.
The EB3 is a thump machine anyway, particularly the neck p/up, so that's still going to give me a fair amount of bottom end (I assume) irrespective of what speaker configuration I go for.
When I had that 1st EB3 I was told by a few shops that the "mudbucker" (neck pickup) had a reputation for blowing speakers. I don't know if that was true or advertising - or more a statement on the quality of bass drivers at the time. My first cab was a TVM ported cab, made in Manchester with 1 x 18" McKenzie speaker. It did the job well, but no top end. -
What bass amp to replace a 70s WEM Dominator Mk1
Big_Stu replied to surfguy13's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have a spare 12x12 cab into which I can load a couple of bass speakers and convert the baffle for 10s or 15s. As a guide will 10s give me enough bottom end or do I need 15s if I want a bit more thump?
Assuming you meant a 2 x 12 and you don't have a 12 speaker cab lying around I would say generally not. It's normal for bass cabs to be bigger/deeper; though there are exceptions (Hiwatt for eg). Many years ago I experimented on whether I could find another exception by putting bass speakers in a designated guitar cab (it was a Vamp) and it sounded awful. So I took them back out & sold the cab on. It's almost a mantra on here btw that speaker size doesn't necessarily reflect "thump". -
Gibson basses, have they always been a bit "different"?
Big_Stu replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
The vintage Gibson shown earlier in the thread is a harp guitar. Popular at the turn of the last century. The outboard strings provide a drone harmony to play over.
The angled string; that is just hooked onto the stand isn't it? Not supposed to be like that? -

You're quoting it as being me that said it - it was - as I put in the quote - a face to face interview between McCartney and Tony Bacon in McCartney's studio. "Eventually I found a little shop in the center of town, and I saw this violin-shaped bass guitar in the window." This was the famous "violin bass," a Hofner 500/1, made in Germany and similar in shape to Gibson's early Electric Bass model. McCartney recalls buying his first violin bass for the equivalent of about $45, and he insists it was a right-handed model that he turned upside down, although all the photographic evidence of the band in those early years shows him with a production left-hander. McCartney has had a number of different versions of the Hofner 500/1 over the years, but he stuck to the model as his sole Beatles live- performance bass as well as the principal bass for the group's recordings until late in the '60s.
