1. I've had the GEC KT88s from my ex-Slade Hiwatt DR201 tested today by a local highly respected valve amp tech on his AVO(??) tester, with a view to selling them. These valves were fitted by Slade's amp tech Charlie prior to their last ever US tour in '84 which was cut short due to illness after three gigs & due to rig size & volume the amp has done only another three gigs since. The figures don't mean a thing to me but he's happy to answer any tech questions via me. He says they all test good, a couple are very slightly microphonic possibly but this may well have improved if I'd had the time to let them warm up fully, but the values are in his opinion good/very good+ & he would be happy to have put them into an amp head IF he didn't already have stock of some. I saw a similar set reach £480 earlier this month on Ebay, I saw a set 8 years ago sell for £600 but times is tough etc. So the way I see it the first serious offer I get for £350 + postage costs extra will secure them. I'm not interested in any trades, there's nothing I need & I'm down-sizing the musical gear I seem to have spread far & wide. I numbered the valves/tubes 1-4 so I knew which measured which and detailed photos can follow to anyone who requires them. The all important figures...........NB the "Grid" was kept at -20v to match the AVO book's standard for all 4 to maintain consistent comparisons...... No leakage indicated on any of them. Tube/Valve #1. GM value 7.5mA Anode Current 80.7 (possibly slightly microphonic) Tube/Valve #2. GM value 7.0mA Anode Current 77.2 Tube/Valve #3. GM value 7.0mA Anode Current 93.8 Tube/Valve #4. GM value 7.0mA Anode Current 68.0 (possibly slightly microphonic) if any of this doesn't make sense it'll be down to my lack of understanding rather than his inability. Obviously being what they are I can't offer any guarantees, warranty or returns, but these numbers are accurate & I will answer any & all questions as well as I possibly can. NB. I do not have Paypal and have no intentions of getting it & am based in the UK. PS. This post is going to be placed on two other sites but not Ebay as yet to give the real players the chance to get them.

 3.
I do. And shall be tomorrow
Yes, but you're fashion displays while playing bass are legendary!
 4.
Spot the deliberate mistake
Tssccch! No-one uses a half-Windsor tie knot these days!
 5.
wow, how did you put up with that? sounds a bit..... mental :/
I'm not ashamed to admit it now (- I was then); I was a battered husband for quite a few years, had it drummed into me as a kid that you never hit a woman, no matter what. I still wouldn't - but now I'd just walk away. Ha! a bit heavy, sorry, maybe not the answer you expected.
 6. While I wouldn't walk out deliberately I wouldn't stick around too long either to a show which was for a large part on tape. As said in a reply on another thread, there's an old bloke "busks" in Market St Manchester every weekend, playing late 50s early 60s stuff. He has the works, PA, CDs for sale etc. But watching him one time I swear most of his "talent" is on the tapes, even the vocals sometimes on the rare song that has them. It's entertaining enough if that's your bag, but it's stretching it to call it "live".
 7. Not another East Lancastrian ............. Good choice with the Fenix, lucky bugger with the Rick!
 8. Like almost all self-employed jobs a great deal of it would depend on where you were geographically, how well known & how much local competition you had. I live within striking distance of Manchester & know of at least two techs who do guitars & amps in the area who have a minimum charge (1st hour) of £50. Which is a fair bit more than the US charges, all of which could be explained by any or all of the 3 variations above. JayDee is a great guy & usually has a waiting list of around 18 months for a build and a month for odd changes, refins etc. I believe he has his son working for him most of the time & is still busy but I've never known him working solo and has grafted for years to get where he is in the business - with a few "names" to endorse his product along the way.
 9.
You should have told them the clue is in the name... Hi , I'm Big Stu , pleased to meet you...
Ha! one woman; different one; once came up to me and said "You're tall!" I said "Ssssh, no-one else seems to have noticed yet, I think I've got away with it!" She apologised (unnecessarily) for being so obvious, so I said "My dad used to put fertiliser in our shoes when we were kids, 'cept he didn't call it fertiliser .......... I'm the smallest of three brothers".......... ........ *sigh* ............. and she was a nurse............ *sigh*............... and she fitted all the "Carry On" stereotypes............... *sigh*....
 10.
May i respectfully suggest that was more of a 'come on' line than a genuine enquiry about how your jeans were wearing?
If it was ............ it worked
 11.
she must have been a great dancer (as my grandparents used to say!)
True - she turned out to be a right "Heilan' Dancer" ('Embra rhyming slang) - as her parents used to say.
 12.
Sounds like a lot of hassle. For a standard post (Fender design) measure 4" passed the post, bend the string, then clip behind bend. For a mini post measure 3" passed the post, bend, clip.
Know what you mean; I did consider the routine for Fender guitars; for the 6th E trim the string length to the D post, for the A string cut it at the B, etc but not being a Fender bass owner - ever - I wasn't sure what the comparative routine is so I went for something that will fit a 2x2 headstock which the Ibanez is.
 13. Mine have always been set so that the lower heel of the bass is at "tackle height". in my single days I gained great kudos from a woman in a pub who wanted to know why I had a hole rubbed in my jeans at the top of my right leg & I said it was from my bass............ so it does happen .............. occasionally............... rarely................ sometimes.
 14. When I had a cull (my only bass - an EB3) it was because I HAD got married and in her view only whooremaisters (= blokes out for a sh*g) play in bands. My bass & guitar buying days really started after the divorce................ so you've got a lot to look forward to!
 15.
That's so cool! Would be nice to read it.
Rescanned, specially for you!
 16.
I've done a fair bit of music work in my 19 years on this earth... I've got function gigs up the wazoo and regular gigs with 3 bands including one with serious label interest. However, despite all this I've come across so much ignorance towards me from certain people simply because I'm a 'kid'. I could act as professionally and friendly as possible to someone yet still be treated like I'm trying to use my bass headstock as a pacifier. I don't and never will understand this mindset at all. I can guarantee there are a lot of people twice/three times my age with far less playing experience that will be given regular and friendly service in music shops, or treated with respect at a gig etc.
IME, depending on who's doing it a lot of this is nervousness on the part of some people who can't handle someone so young being able to relate to them on the same level, it's just how some people deal with such an awkward feeling for them. If you get it from those on any level of authority, labels, promoters etc. it's often just a feeble way of trying to establish their authority. You're obviously doing nothing wrong, descending to their level can only do you harm, + you've no reason to nark anyone so just keep doing what you're doing, it'll all work itself out eventually.
 17. Have you tried http://www.cottamguitars.co.uk/ He seems a bit slow on updating his site, but might be worth an email, claims to be a huge stockist of Ibanez spares.
 18. Anyone fancy a bit of vintage awesome power in their guitar or bass? having all those poles makes it work like a blade so they're great in guitar OR bass (I have both for now) http://www.ebay.co.u...070649219219381 No connection with the seller, but right now I'm thinking "£160?" I'll be flogging a JB Magnum which looks near identical to that in coming weeks, so I'll be hoping for similar. All of the sellers pitch about Iommi is a crock, easily demonstrated by the page they included themselves from a JB catalogue telling you that it's the Magnum which Iommi uses, because of it's huge output.
 19. I've never bothered too much whether it's been the taper or thick part that's on the machine & never had any issues. Though TBH mine are both 34" & it's usually just taper with thick just going on on the E. I'd agree with Doddy that it was maybe ready to break anyway, a flaw in the metal or something. The BTB isn't a cheapo so it's maybe just down to bad luck. Having too much wrap on the post will make tuning unstable; I aim to have one winding go over the string at the post with two, maybe three winds going underneath the string as it wraps around, it creates a good break at the nut, string tension builds & locks against the string. Everyone finds a way that works for them, but a worthy guide is when you have the new string in the bridge & threaded onto the post at the other end; pull the string hand taught over the 12th fret & aim to get around 14cms between the string & the fingerboard. Put a slight kink in the string at the peg (to show you that correct point in case it slips) & start winding. Sounds a bit of a rigmarole but it works for most, you may have to adjust the "15cm" bit depending on the string gauge, machine post thickness, etc.
 20.
..........he does a solo and has a whammy bar.......the only other guy i know of who has one is Les Claypool
.... and it sounds like this......... .... on their last tour in '83 he was showing it off & let me have a go on it.... I was a tad nervous.

 23.
Technically I think that should be delay.
Why? Is there another coming along? Threads like this are like buses, you don't see one for ages then they all come at once.
 24.
Yes it was discussed quite recently and I would say the same as I said then. http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
This is just that thread with a lot of echo on it.
 25.
Thank you! Yes, it's a metallic purple / emerald green flip paint that changes colour, but under certain indoor lights it looks dark blue. Outside in bright sunlight there's a flash of red round the edges too. There's a link to my build diary in my sig below.
Not my bag, but totally regardless of that you can't help but be stunned at the skill, dedication and ability of the creator.
