2. I've been trying to get along to one of these for the last few years, but it's always clashed with something. Looked like it was going to be the same this year, but the gig I was due to playing at tomorrow afternoon is no longer happening so, silver lining and all that, I should be able to make it finally. I'll add my name to the list and hope that nothing untoward occurs in the next 12 hours or so! 3. time for a weekend bump ... as paul_5 says (thanks paul_5!) these really are great studio preamps!
4. A fine collection of JV Ps ... these are great basses ... here are my two 1982 examples Although I've recently sold the Squier, I still have the Fender .. .and I also have a 1983 JV Squier Jazz ... pre CBS quality for a fraction of the price
5. For sale: Set of EMG Select Jazz pickups - SEJ (neck) and SEPJ (bridge) - dating I believe from the 1980s, which I removed from a recently acquired Squier JV Jazz. £35 inc UK delivery Strings (all 4-string sets) - £15 per set inc UK delivery Rotosound Solo Bass, 45 - 105, standard scale, cut for a through-bridge Fender Jazz D'Addario XL, 45 - 100, medium scale, cut for a 32" scale, through-bridge Jaguar style bass Unknown brand (I'm sure someone out there can identify the pink wrappings!), 40/45 - 95/100 (not entirely sure which), short scale, cut for a 30.5", through-bridge, 2-a-side (ADA4 copy) All strings around 6 months to 1 year old, but with no more than a couple of days home use.
6. I've had this for about 3 years now, but I'm only using a fraction of its capabilities so I think it's time to simplify things. I bought it when I was regularly doubling on EUB & EBG and it's brilliant for that (or for doubling on active & passive basses, or electric & acoustic), however I no longer use the EQ channel, and I'm now effectively only using it as mute footswitch and for the effects loop, so there are probably cheaper options out there. Details here: http://www.rmi.lu/pr...-di-bass-preamp It's a top quality professional piece of kit with high end build and sound quality. Currently velcroed for my pedal board, but the original rubber feet are included, as is the original case & printed manuals in English and German (English version is slightly creased!). Now £250 inc UK delivery (currently listed at £399 on Bass Direct) No trades please - I've bought too much lately, and I have a large tax bill to pay! ... But feel free to make offers via PM
7. Tape wound or flat wound strings will help - also think about the eq settings on your amp as well as on the bass ... and try and get out front & listen to it in the mix as well as close up (if & when you're gigging or rehearsing) - in my experience the further away you are the low end comes through more & you lose some of the top ... it'll never sound quite like a P, but I can get a sound from my Jazz which is close enough to a P for a live situation.
8. Thinking about moving this on, as I'm just not using it enough and it really shouldn't just be lying around gathering dust! I've had it about 3 years if I remember correctly, and as far as I know it dates for around the early 1990s. Had it serviced by a local amp tech when I first got it and all appears to be working fine, however I have one or two observations ... With the 'Ultra Low' switched in the effect is more of a mid scoop than a low boost to my ears ... I have no idea if this is how it would have sounded when new or whether something has changed over the years. Neither the 'Bright' input or the 'Ultra Hi' setting seems to make much audible difference to me (but then my ears are not as sharp in the upper registers as they used to be ) ... again, I have no idea if this is as it would have been when new. Also none of my bass cabs has a tweeter, so some of the high frequency resonance will be lost. Overall sound is just sweet Ampeg valve warmth, with lots of EQ options and a large range of possible sounds. For a couple of years I used it as my main gigging rig, powered with a Peavey IPR-1600 PA amp and the sound was huge! I've since scaled down a little bit though to something a little bit more compact. Overall condition is good, but it's around 25 years old so there are a few marks around the casing, but nothing significant. Now £275 inc UK delivery (appropriate reduction if collected). No trades please - I've bought too much lately, and I have a large tax bill to pay! ... But feel free to make offers via PM
9. Valve pre-amp, class D power amp. Loads of power ... details here http://www.genzbenz....&sid=715&cid=95 I've had this for just over a year (bought used) and been gigging with it once or twice a month, however I have just acquired a Thunderfunk, so can't really see myself using it much any more. Great piece of kit though, from clean tones through to a nicely gritty valve growl with the gain cranked up, and it's always had more volume than I've needed for your typical pub & club gigs. A very few marks & scuffs around the casing (see photos), but all very minor & cosmetic - no dents or actual damage. Now £375 inc UK postage (appropriate reduction if collected). No trades please - I've bought too much lately, and I have a large tax bill to pay! ... But feel free to make offers via PM
10. I was living in London a few years ago (Greenwich/Blackheath area, 2 minutes walk to the nearest station), playing in an acoustic jazz/blues trio (acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals). We used to play regularly at the 12-Bar Club, so we'd get the train into Charing Cross & walk up to Denmark Street. We usually had a mid-set billing and last train back was after midnight it so all worked out fine ... ... except that the music went on till around 2 am and after a couple of beers we always wanted to stay & watch the other bands, so the taxi home invariably cost more than we'd actually earned from the gig (south of the river mate? this time of night? you're 'avin' a larf!) ... but we had a lot of fun, saw some fine bands, and spent considerably less than on a normal Saturday night out in the west end!
11. Yep - it's the 2x10 isobaric cab ... says so on the listing! I had to do a double take the first time I saw one myself. The drivers are mounted one behind the other in enclosed compartments ... apparently this arrangement gives extended bass response, although I haven't tried one myself
12. I've started getting rid of unnecessary cases. My basses hang on the wall or on stands when not in use, and I rarely take more than 2 out at a time for gigs ... so I've managed to clear out a lot of space under the beds! ... all I need to do now is find something to fill up all that space with ... hmmmm ...
13. Just bought a Thunderfunk head from Mark. Great communication and rapid delivery - a very smooth transaction. Deal with confidence! Cheers.
14.
Does the combined ohms rating not depend on whether they are in series or parallel as in series doubles, parallel halves?
Yes it does, but in practice multiple cabs connected to an amp will almost certainly be connected in parallel, as this is the way amps and cabs with more than one speaker connection are generally wired. A cab with multiple speakers may be wired in series or in parallel, but this will be reflected in the total impedance of the cab. So a 2 x 12 cab with two speakers of 8 ohms can be wired in parallel to give a total impedance of 4 ohms, or wired in series to give a total impedance of 16 ohms.
15. Just sold my JV Precision to Mark ... turns out he lives just down the road and we'll be playing at the same event at the weekend with our respective bands! Top bloke, thoroughly recommended
16. Up for sale is my Squier JV Precision, which dates from August 1982 - which I believe was the first month they were sold with the 'Squier' logo replacing the 'Fender' (Squier Series) logo. Neck date is 8-21-82 (21st Aug 1982) and the neck pocket date is 82.8. Serial no is JV12604. As far as I can tell it is all original; cloth covered wiring, reverse tuners etc. Very striking Sen 'Ash' body (appears to be 2-piece) which really shows off the grain nicely. These are really great basses, as I'm sure everyone is aware - built as exact replicas of the classic 1962 Precision. So basically a pre-CBS spec Precision, with 35 years authentic ageing, at a fraction of the cost of an actual '62 bass! Condition is excellent, with only a few very minor dings and marks in keeping with its age. The worst is probably a slight dent on the back of the neck (see photo) which I never actually notice while playing. I've had this bass for about 18 months and the only reason for selling is that I have now acquired a slightly older, July '82 'Fender' logo model, which is otherwise identical! I've thought about keeping them both, but I don't really believe in owning an instrument that never gets played, so here it is. Any questions please ask. Comes with generic Stagg bass case (in v good condition): https://www.staggmus...cts/view/ABSRB2 £925 incl shipping (UK mainland)
