1. I have recently started gigging with my EUB in a fairly raucous band, my usual bouncing about and lunging has been curtailed by a strong desire not to break my wrist. I will get the hang of it though.
2. Daft Punk, laura marling, Vampire Weekend, oh, and Bowie, really, very much so, turgid crap.
3. http://www.amazon.com/Decline-Western-Civilization-II-The-Metal/dp/6302725623 Or buy this, and obviously a VHS player, unless yours hasn't packed up yet.
4.
A bit of a faf for me, there are built units that can do this. Why go for passive? My experience with passive stuff is the signal tends to drop considerably, and obviously you can only cut volume with a passive unit. I'm selling ny ls-2 as soon as I get my custom cog pedal.
Cos I am cheap, and skint, and can build a passive box with bits I have lying about. LS-2 is £80, a wee bit less than the Electric bill i am currently selling stuff off to pay for, and similar to the MOT costs I have to pay for next week, and will then have to find stuff to pay for. Life is a pain... effects should be easier.
5.
I'm with Jack on this one. Ventilation is your friend. Mould and condensation flourish where there is no air movement Fit a continuous running extractor fan like this http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/B004Z0SG48
I've bought that fan now Dave, and having opened the box and had a look inside, i am going to have to phone a friend, it is a tad confusing on the installation front to say the least. I think it might be because it has no outside grill with it, and a weird flappy bit where I expected a hole..... Will look closer with an appropriate adult (Ok, my friend james who is 2 years younger than me, but knows this sort of stuff, we are both nearer 40 than 30 now)
6. many people really like the Yamaha APX acoustics. I am not one of them They are quite thinline, and sound a bit thin unplugged, stick it in an amp and the preamp gives you more lovely fatter tones. But unplugged they are a bit thin, wimpy and no bottom end at all. YMMV.
7.
A 'studio porn ' page. So many good things on here and so many good things mentioned
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/212756-home-studio-porn/page__fromsearch__1 Waaaaaayyyy ahead of you.
8. Oh, might have to make second fuzzface. out of interest, is it easy enough to add a 9v power supply into my daft mixer to stop all the noise drops and get a simple little thing running on 3 or 4 pots for easy mixing of stuff on pedalboard?
9. bike reflector type lenses over the leds for big eyes? Love it Rich, excellent work.
10. My new studio is disconnected from the internet (because it is too far from my wireless router and in a shed) so I can only listen to stuff on laptop speakers in the house (unless I hook it up to the big stereo) This is my excuse for my recent lack of input over here. having said that competitions to win stuff sounds great Paul, I'm up for that. And a continuation of 51mon's recording blog would be good too, all good stuff in there.
11.
You'll be digging Dokken and Poison out next
Nothing wrong with poison (except Rikki Rockets hair)
12. That is both a fine home, and a fine studio. Is that a solid-stately home studio? Here's mine after a bit of work, it is not pretty, but it does work.
13. I live in the middle of nowhere, it is not the easiest thing in the world to pop into maplins Dr Tweek looks excellent, i shall throw some pennies his way.
14. Yet more thanks Paul, need to go buy boards and resistors and things now. This could get interesting.
15.
Well from an accounting point of view houses and any non-consumable item of music gear is a capital purchase and not a cost/expense so yes the "cost" of all these things is 0 .
I shall tell the mortgage company that I'm not giving them anymore money then, as my house apparently cost nothing. hooray!
16. Bought a Pedal off Dan, proper decent bloke, no problems at all. fast, well packed, and does what it should.
17. I loved them back in the day. Put my copy of 20 golden crates on in the car the other day, and had to stop after a while. Rampant racist, homophobic, misogynist rantings were hysterical when I was 18, but now it seems a bit cringeworthy. Shame, as I really liked them (PS, No Sheep Til Buxton still cracked me up)
18. Let me reiterate, my main bass cost me £30 nearly 20 years ago. I could probably get £100 for it now at the very least. It is not and never has been an investment instrument. This has therefore cost me less than nothing, hooray! Holding value does not make something cost nothing, you have to sell it for that, and you can't use it if you sell it.
19. That certainly is a little more complicated. But possible a good idea. I shall try the first stupidly easy one, and then build a buffer when it doesn't work (need to make something like this to go between my wah and my fuzz-face on the guitar board anyway, so should really get on with getting the hang of it) Thanks Paul.
20. Right, I need to blend my effects and clean signal as I am using fairly tinny synth sounds, and the bottom end drops out a lot, I am already running through a bypass looper (not because of any tone sucking thoughts, but just to save tap dancing while selecting multiple effects on and off) I figured if I make a little box with 2 pots, 2 resistors and 3 jack sockets, I should be able to go from the direct out of my first synth pedal into one side, and the end of the effects chain into the other and happily set the levels for the effected sound with the pots. Will this work, or will there be a massive volume drop between the bypassed signal and the effects loop coming in?
21. I use my Sunn Mustang P-bass copy (constantly) which I repossessed off my mate for £30 beer money owed in 1996. I also have his old peavey TNT which he gave me for nothing a couple of years ago. Sadly can't gig it, as the amp needs a bit of work. But once I've bought £2.50s worth of pots it will. So that's 32.50 in total.
22. Right, sort out door is still on list anyway, but greenhouse heater and proper dehumidifier are now going on the shopping list as well. It is reportedly not on as thick a bit of concrete as one might like (the chap I bought the house off told me that when I was buying it) it has 3 carpets on it to try and make up for that. House is officially late 19th century, but may well have been converted from older outbuildings. Shed is not that old, but the barn wall probably is. Long term plan is to buy the barn as well, and convert the inside properly for a decent studio as well. just need to have a fair bit more money for that.
23. Apologies for sticking this in general discussion, but it is music related as it is my home studio that is currently at risk, and I want everyone to be able to help me, not just the usual OT nutters. I realised last night, after 2 months in my new lovely home that the outdoor workshop that I have turned into my studio is in fact damp, and it wasn't just that heatwave that knocked everything for six. This was when I picked up every single stringed instrument in reach, and found all the strings to be sticky and a bit rusty. Not ideal. Now it is a big shed on a concrete base, with one wall being the cob wall of next doors barn that it is built against. The shed has a plywood skin on the inside, and an old wooden house door with a window in it. Here's a couple of photos of it from when I moved in. So, possible problem areas, there is a gap over the door where the frame doesn't quite reach the top, I am thinking to put a brushy draught excluder there. Also, there are a few gaps where the frame doesn't quite make the walls, expandy foam for those. There are two air vent holes through the walls up by the ceiling, might be a problem, i was going to put wire mesh over them to stop the moths and mice and badgers coming through anyway, will this be enough? Or should I foam these up as well, and do something else to breathe? I was going to place little caravan dehumidifiers in there as well, as they used to work in the old garage studio that i had before this one. Also, before anybody pipes up telling me not to keep all my gear in a shed, there is no room in the house, and I have no alternative, it was all in the garage at my old house for the last 10 years with no problems, you are not being helpful Anyone got any ideas? All gratefully received. Edited: cos I can't post photos properly....
24. For recording, my multi-effects boxes are fine. Soon as I put them in a live situation though, the stupid multi press menus drive me nuts as i can't quickly change settings to suit the sudden change in volume/tempo/wind direction. Also the synth sounds are invariably unuseable.
25. I am too lazy to use two basses, so i play some fairly rocky stuff on a harley-benton EUB. Works fine.
