I did insert a smiley in the attempt to imply some humour, and as per my subsequent post I wouln't criticise what I don't know about. People at different levels experience things in different ways. Taking you example of artwork (although a lot of the thread appears to be more about content) I know bog all about it and occasionally notice things that I think look effective and those that merely raise an eyebrow. i.e. to the untrained eye it is less important, although as it's clearly your area of expertise you are deeply frustrated by it. I suspect that the market for this type of publication is relatively small in circulation terms, so that a range of publications from those aimed at numpties and beginners (like me) to pros (like a number of you) may be impractical. I certainly get frustrated that sometimes reviews will refer to a particular feature of a guitar but there is no image to illustrate the point, and I have written to the magazine to ask them to see if they can improve on this. I've also requested more reviews of equipment I can afford even though I do enjoy drooling over some of the top end basses. If you scan through the thread a lot of the posts would appear to follow the great British tradition of moaning about things without offering a contructive alternative. If everybody that has criticsed the publication here has made the same comments in the same terms to the editor then fair enough, I'll shut up and go away. But I would bet a decent wedge that this will not have been the case. Anyway, I enjoy reading (most of) it and if it brings more people into the bass community, then that's a great result. Good luck to them.

I play my 4003 through a Gallien Kruger MB500. Nobody has stabbed me yet . I use different EQ settings for Ric and it seems fine to me although solid state amps not as easy to overdrive imo. In a live band situation the difference for the purists will probably be dimished, although I'm sure I'm about to be told otherwise

I bought an RBX270F on evilbay a couple of years ago for £90. Really liked it and am now in the process of upgrading it rather than buying another bass. I like the neck, the balance, the general quality, the playability and the fact that it cost me s@d all! Upgrades change that though but really looking forward to the RBX270F "special"....

Well after some months of dithering, several beers, and in depth analysis at the pub as to whether to buy a new bass or upgrade, the decision from the now obligatory phone vote is in.... It's an upgrade. New bridge, wiring, and pups. Will post some pics when I've finished. In reality probably not the sensible financial decision, but hey, I like the bass

Mostly 4s but recently acquired a 5, so who knows!

Although in my defence I know nothing about anything so I find bits of it quite informative. I normally enjoy your post silddx but I think you're somewhat off target here.

Please bear in mind you're dealing with a techno idiot here who took a while to figure out how to put digitsl photos on a post. The thought of recordings etc makes me feel a little strange...

I bought a Cirrus BXP 5 as my first 5-string (£200). I tried a bunch of the more modestly prices 5's (Yamaha RBX, Peavey, Aria, and Ibanez) and for me the best two were the Peavey and Ibanez, the former just shading it. Awesome sound IMHO [attachment=64380:Peavey_C...5_string.JPG]

I've an RBX270F which is much the same apart from an addition J pup at the bridge. For a budget f/l bass I think it's a cracker although I'm still contemplating a bridge swap and possibly posher pups too. Neck is great though. Make sure you put flatwounds on as they sound so much better imho

We are kind of on the fence in that we play pubs and clubs so we play as many of our songs as we think we can get away with interspersed with some covers. A reasonable compromise

Pardon my general ignorance but what gear actually requires PAT testing? Is it just the kettle leads that plug into the outside world or is it every amp/active piece of kit?

I was in exactly the same position a few weeks ago and have just acquired a Peavey Cirrus BXP 5 for £220 - virtually brand new - and very much enjoy playing it. I was also quite taken with an Ibanez I tried at the same time, but for me it was the feel of the B string that sold it to me. As ever try before buying anything

I personally am a fan. In a time just after dinosaurs walked the earth and I saw Led Zeppelin play live a few times I decided I wanted to be a bass player. Not too long after that I decided I'd really like a Rickenbacker bass. Skip forward a few decades when I had some disposable to do something about it I then started playing. I finally achieved Nirvana this year and bought a Jetglow 4003 (and gigged it). I think they are fantastic basses with some remarkable quirks (e.g. the bridge). All in all I am completely pro Rics and although some compromise is necessary the look of the thing is amazing - a real design classic. I can't yet bring myself to remove the pick up cover and as a mostly finger style player this is an issue Try one today

Just acquired a Peavey BXP Cirrus 5-string, unmarked & less than 6 months old for just over £200. Worth every penny and has a nice 35" scale for less flappiness about the B string
