  1. I avoid anything with Fender or Squier on the headstock but I do like the look of these. I hadn't realised that they did them passive (my preference). I'm GAS free at the moment, but these will be on my radar (I like the fact that they are lightweight and not a P or J bass) when GAS strikes again (which it will probably sooner rather than later
  2. I had a 22 fret neck made by Keisel/Carvin in the USA. It was cheaper than I could get made for me in the UK (even after import duty etc).
  3. Bought last year, fitted and then never used (except to tune the bass). I just don't use my double bass live, so rather than have £190.00 worth of pickup sitting here I think it should go to someone who might actually use it. Here's the blurb from the website: For Acoustic Upright Bass Does not require a pre-amp or other active, battery powered gear Produces a rich and powerful response that is acoustically true for both pizzicato and arco without adjusting controls The flexible element fits under the bridge foot picking up sound from both the bridge and top plate - Does not include 1/4" both ends cable Designed by Ned Steinberger in association with David Gage The Realist Upright Bass acoustic transducer was designed by Ned Steinberger in association with David Gage. A primary design goal was to create a transducer that would work equally well for pizzicato and arco through commonly used amplifiers, without requiring a pre-amp or other active, battery powered gear. A flexible element fits under the bridge foot so that it picks up sound from both the bridge and top plate. Produces a rich and powerful response that is acoustically true for both pizzicato and arco without adjusting controls. No preamp necessary. Easy installation. Just plug it in.

    Thunderbird

Let us know how you get on with it as I too have a thing about Thunderbirds, but the reviews about their weight and unwieldiness have always put me off (plus finding a 5 string version that is affordable - though I have seen one on Reverb so would love to know what you think before I decide
  5. Hi Jules, I sold mine a couple of years ago to a guy in Lewes - can't remember his name. He does the odd spot in the local pubs and plays it like an upright. If I remember I'll let you know.
  6. Simon Farmer at GUS Guitars. If they are good enough for Prince........
  7. If you're ever in East Sussex pop in for a cuppa and a try of a 5 string upright
  8. I converted to 5 string electric bass a few years back, so obviously sold my 4 string 3/4 upright bass and got a 5 string 3/4 upright. Managed to get a set of black nylons strings (that cost a fortune) and hardly ever touch the low B. Too damn difficult to play.
  9. I only play 5's now (2 Patrick Eggles, 1 'converted' Epiphone Zenith and a 3/4 double bass). Only because it makes my life easier by playing pretty much everything between the 5th and 8th fret - very little moving around (which for someone who isn't the best player in the world is a godsend . As far as weight goes, my Eggles both only weigh about 8 1/2 lbs, so a 2 hour gig is easy on the shoulder.

    Reverend basses

Everyone does a 'more traditional' shape. This isn't exactly 'out there' in the design department but at least they've tried to not do yet another Fender clone.
  11. New 4 string Piezo element and rosewood bridge from my Epiphone Zenith project Free to a good home
  12. I'm in Buxted near Uckfield - the band I'm in is a covers function band but we seem to be in a very quiet spot at the moment.
  13. Joinmyband.co.uk
  14. I'm 54, our singer and guitarist are 21 and 24 respectively. Drums 46 and keys 39. We are a function band (so cheesy pop from 50's to now) but age has never had anything to do with it. We get on together and are all around the same standard, so we fit together musically too. The drummer and I are both into heavy rock (so nothing like the music we play) but that makes no difference to the band at all. Age shouldn't be an issue.
  15. Same here in the South-East
  16. Added a piezo to the bridge if anyone is interested
  17. I wish I'd managed to do it all myself, like you, but sometimes it's best left to the professionals PS. If anyone wants the original rosewood bridge then they can have it for free.
  18. Just got the Zenith back. All I can say is OMG. It's gorgeous. Simon at GUS has managed to fit a 22 fret 5 string neck to a 21 fret 4 string bass and you'd never know. The passive EMG's and greasebucket tone mod sound lush with a threeway switch and wired in series and parallel. The piezo only has a volume pot but it's got a hidden secret. Instead of being battery run it's powered by a capacitor that takes only 1 minute to charge and this will last 16 hours. I've put the original brass bridge logo on the headstock instead of where it should be. In my opinion it just looks better on the headstock (it looked good on the original rosewood bridge but now that has been made larger it looked out of proportion and 'wrong'). Anyway, I know I didn't do anything to convert it (unlike some of the skilled people on BC I would have just ruined something that, in my eyes, is probably one of the best looking basses I've ever laid eyes on), but I knew what I wanted and luckily had one of the finest luthiers on the planet just down the road from me who managed to transform my thoughts into a work of art
  19. Just seen some 3M black/white chequered vinyl on eBay. You could stick that onto the scratch plate
  20. It's for a 5 string bass. 5 string is a lot more. Love it. Going out to buy some ice lollies and I'll give it a go
