What's the balance like on these Rick copies? Are they neck heavy with such a lightweight wood body (especially the basswood ones)?
I can almost guarantee that this thread will also now descend into another place to argue over this subject
Now there's a self-fulfilling prophesy if ever there was one!!
-
I'm not sure I understand why this subject engenders such strong feelings. It's not as though there needs to be a "do you hate fretless/fingerstyle/pick playing/distortion/five string basses...?" poll is there? I like it in general terms, but there are times when it is inappropriate. Like any style, if it's done badly it's horrible. I do it now and then, but I don't see why I should feel embarrassed about it?
Stove enamel steel grill under the cloth...
Yup. Built like the proverbial out-house this thing! You can hear it in the tone too. Warm, full but clean, powerful and as close to a 'full-range' sound as you will get out of a cab with only one size of driver in it. Go on - you know you want to!! -
Is it the same cab as this one? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=127267
One man's musical desert is another's musical dessert.
Brilliant!!! Mind if I use that in my sig?
It only gets lost in the mix if it's EQ'd badly, and it's popularity suggests that lots of people do like listening to it-just not particularly the 'fast chops for no reason' stuff, but even that has it's place.
Exactly. Despite saying earlier that I like slap - I bloody hate what that Tourette's guy was doing. Impressive for about 20 seconds maybe, and then you realise that he is simply pouting and preening like peacock on steroids... Compare that with some of the beautiful, lyrical slapped basslines from the "musical desert" of the 1980s (yes, I was there too!) by the likes of Abe Laboriel, Marcus Miller, Freddie Washington, Byron Miller, etc - and it's like saying that Jaco and John Deacon are the same because they both play with their fingers!! Wake up and smell the coffee guys. This is not about playing style, this is about some people being attention-seeking turds and others feeling the groove. And, of course, everything in between!
When I test drive a new car I put the wipers on fast, headlights main beam, stereo on max volume, 7500 rpm and dump the clutch. It's the only way to get a feel for what it can do.
Brilliant! Don't forget the foglights though!!
I think this narrows down the right Vs wrong
I love slap, and I think this guy is awesome... but after about 90 seconds I was wishing he would play some fingerstyle or use a pick! That's the whole point of slap to me - It's great for an effect or to simply give a different style or sound. But used all the time it becomes very wearing and fatiguing on the ears. Well, mine anyway!

Mt Status is my pride and joy. When I bought it, it was horrendously expensive. It is beautiful to look at and lovely to play. Fortunately, it is also pretty bullet-proof! It has been well gigged, dropped a couple of times, bashed into mike stands and cymbals, sweated on, doused in beer (whenever my mouth can't catch it first!) and many other abuses. I am happy for young players to use it - because I remember what I would have felt like as a 16 year old if i could have played on something like that. Karma and all that. It's a tool, but a tool that I love and feel as though it is part of me. Like a carpenter with his favourite hammer maybe?

Slap can be all things to all people. I know this to be a fact, because I agree with myself on this point. Horses for courses, etc. Done with taste and tact it can be beautiful. I stopped going to music (and especially bass) shows many years ago for this very reason. The last one was back in 1987, and the Goodfellow stand sounded like a typing pool. I quote: "Yuckity-yuckity-twat-yuckity-yuckity-twat-yuckity-yuckity-juckity-juckity-yuckity-yuckity-twat-twat-twat". Bastards.
So yes..a 500watt amp..which is often the norm in nominal power ratings, and a cab that can take 600watts should suit you fine. Nobody has to use all that power but it is good to have it all in hand, IMO.
Like this one? It would need to be a real moment of madness for me to consider selling or trading my Status series II. I have actually thought about it a couple of times, but then I wake up and remember that it is not only the best bass I have ever played (for me), but that I have 25 years of history with it. It was my first serious buy when I had my first proper job and I just can't imagine no longer owning it! Until, maybe, a Warwick Thumb 5 with a thru neck comes along.... Eek!
-
I need to stop looking at this. I'm starting to have silly thoughts. Like, for example "would the OP be interested in trading his V4 for my BFB Vintage and LH500?". Of course he wouldn't. Silly idea. I am mad to even suggest it... And the fact that I'm in Edinburgh next weekend has nothing to do with it either.
I reckon £700 is a fair price for a collectible rare piece of Trace history.
I think you're probably right! Sadly, that's more than I've got to spend at the moment - so unfortunately, I'm out. And dead jealous of whoever gets this!

This. Sadly, it sold before I had the chance to persuade Mrs C what a great investment it might turn out to be... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=121791&hl=1966

I really like my Cort Curbow 5 - and it only cost £322 from Thomann last year! A bit limited in tones due to the single pick-up, but it is a Bartolini and the active tone controls allow for plenty of shaping. The body shape may not be to everyone's taste, but it balances very well, is light, and plays well.

From the Trace Elliot V-range. Designed to be paired with the V4, V6 or (if you can get your hands on one) V8 amps. Not the usual black tolex covered affair, but a very glamorous sparkly green carpet and grille cloth. I got this in a trade about six months ago, but then got my BareFaced Vintage soon after. I love both cabs, but storing and using two big 2x15s is slightly over the top! For that reason, I am letting this one go. A tough choice, but the Vintage is more transportable due to it's lightness. This particular cab has been very well looked after as for much of its life it was housed in a full flight case. It now has a custom-made Roqsolid padded cover with matching green piping! Smart! Condition is very good, even allowing for the fact that its about 15 years old. The only visible marks are a small chip in the paint on one of the handles and a small part near the bottom right where there looks like a very small tear in the carpet but you could probably just go over that with a black marker and you'll never notice it. It weighs 45kg. Heavy, yes - but very easy to move due to the large casters fitted by the previous owner (Delberthot - thanks to him for some of the text from his original ad), and the fact that although it is tall and wide, it is not particularly deep. The dimensions are 74cm wide, 84cm high (including casters) and 36cm deep. The cab is rated to handle 500w @ 8ohms and has both 1/4" jack and XLR inputs and outputs. The sound it produces is deep and rich, with creamy highs. It is certainly not boomy or wooly in any way!! A very classy tone with my LH500. I love this cab, and would ideally like to keep it - but Mrs C is complaining about the space it takes up and the fact that I rarely use it... Due to the weight, local pick-up would be the obvious option, although I am happy to drive a reasonable distance from Newcastle to meet up if it helps. Open to offers, but looking for £250 for this wonderful cab. Thanks for looking.
