1.
Playing bass with a pick or fingers which gives more groove? which shows you are more talented? which is more respected?
You can groove with both techniques. Talent has nothing got to do with it, you can be equally as bad with either technique, talent comes from practicing every aspect of the instrument. Respect? Theres plenty of fine bassists who get slammed because of many other reasons so I wouldnt even worry about that one.
2. Thats the sh*t! Reminds me of some of The Santana Brothers work.
3. IMO its a great situation to be in. You can be really expressive and use the bass as a lead instrument at times or lay back and keep things solid and tight.Just experiment with songs at practice until you're comfortable enough to try some improv. I normally use my 6string through a suitable amp (depends on venue). FX wise i use a Digitech chorus and an Ebow.
4. Result! They are cracking basses.
5.
So much sunburst...
So little sandpaper! Interesting read.
6. I play with an anchored right hand and use my left hand for muting, just as I would on a 4 string. Which notes are you worried about? Fretted notes or strings/notes hit by accident?
7. I reckon the bass world would be lost without him. Guitarists have always had a standout character, someone with the personality to go with the chops. Until Flea came along I dont think there was a bassist who made the instrument look "cool". His style is great, punk based groove. Or is it groove based punk.........? I also reckon the way he works with Chad is fantastic. Tight as a dolphins ass but the two can still go in different directions without sounding cack. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of the albums after By The Way but the basslines are still excellent on many of the tracks. Oh yea, What a tone!
8. Yep discreet beat me to it. Surgical spirit works wonders. If I havent played for a few days I brush a few layers of Loctite on my fingertips before a gig to stop the skin breaking. Works well for me and I dig in heavily.
9. Good choice. Plenty of options with power. From memory they go to something over 1900 watts in bridged mode
10. Is it just on the skin or is it a deeper pain, ie something internal?
11.
There's a fair advantage in limited dispersion in some venues where the walls are reflective in the mids and stuff, they make for a reverby mess if you don't have some directional going on. Local bowling alley has bands and 4x12s sound much better than combos.
Can the band bring their own shoes?
12. Yep another +1 for Crown. Also as said above the Peavey stuff is fairly bombproof.
13.
Stacked vertically?
If you like buddy. On that note. The last time I saw Alice in Chains Mike had 2 8x10's stacked horizontally with 2 1x15's at the end. This whole stacking thing only works in venues up to a certain size. Ergo, FOH is probably more important than backline in any venue where you would need a rig with more than 1 8x10.
14.
There's always a way around that..... 2Ω head!
That actually got me thinking. A lot of 700+ watt heads dont seem to be available with a 2ohm carrying capacity. Strange really. 2ohm = 16x10 = more than most will ever need. Nice rig JPJ.
15. Everything that isnt a Fender & 3toneburst going on what I've seen this year. Having said that, I do fancy a 'burst Pbass with a maple board...........
16. Just added my sub £500 bass that I use for covers gigs. Sometimes I'll bring one of the Spectors or 'wicks to a pub gig but its a rare treat for myself.
17. Always fancied trying to wind my own pick up. Re choice I reckon theres a few questions you should add the the list. 1: Is the bass likely to remain your main instrument? 2: Are super spec pups required in a sound sensitive situation, ie. recording glass like tones on a highly produced track/album? 3: Will the punters be able to tell the difference? 4: What are the chances that you'll be unhappy with the initial purchase and be forced to shell out for a more expensive option?
18.
Unfortunately I suffered an injury at work. I lift (a lot!) at work. Often several tons over the course of a day. Because of good technique, my back is still fine and I've plenty of core strength. I'm right-handed, and my elbow simply went "Pop" The symptoms seem to echo people's descriptions of "Tennis Elbow" Whilst it's painful/awkward at work, I can work around it without painkillers. With bass-playing, it's seriously hampering my playing as the required inward/upward movement for the correct forearm position to reach the strings is painful to maintain. I've tried lengthening the strap/s, and using different basses and R/H positions but to no avail. I play exclusively fingerstyle, and using a plectrum would probably be excruciating. I refuse to use painkillers, as they only mask the symptoms, and I may be risking further injury/damage by pushing it. Yesterday (day off), I did as little as possible requiring the use of my right arm, and did quite well until I picked my daughter up.... then it went back to square one. Any ideas (besides going lefty)?
Aye, as above I'd suggest getting it checked out. X-rays etc. etc. Problems can quickly become more substantial if you overdo it, even with the best of intentions. Laying off on the right hand doesn't mean you cant practice though. Use it as an chance to work on some left hand technique.
19. ....and the last bit... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDl-PAnslz4&feature=relmfu
20. The Local Fuzz by the mighty Atomic Bitchwax. 70's inspired fuzzy, funky goodness.
21. I used a Planet Waves locking strap for the last 12 odd years without a problem. Its the older version of this one. http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/38340-planet-waves-planet-lock-strap-black.html Not exactly what you're looking for but a good option to keep in mind.
22. IMO it fairly simple. If you are writing a baseline and effect X sounds good to you then use it. If you're playing a cover and decide to throw something on it then go for it. As long as it adds to the song and doesn't swamp the other instruments then there's no problem. Its all about personal choice. Telling a bassist which Fx he/she should use is like telling an artist what brushstrokes he/she should use....
23. There's a few options. You could pick up something with a pre amp like a sans amp bddi or a mxr m80. Or if you just fancy a straight DI look at something from Radial. Their stuff is excellent IMO.
24. The only thing better than 2 8x10's on a big stage is decent IEM's. I'll leave it at that.
