1. I've never used the "old school" GK gear, only their MB series but it has blown me away. They seem to have the GK growl and bite just like their bigger amps (based on recordings of bassists using the big stuff!) but I can't really compare accurately. All I know is they are clean and clear when you want and gnarly and dirty when you want that instead
2. SWR Amplite is a class D power amp
3. Jealous and I own one, haha!
4. I use a Barefaced S12T so will naturally suggest that, it is an astonishingly good cab. I've had three Barefaced cabs in my time and this is the best of a great bunch Of the three I think the BF or Berg will hold its value best probably but I have no practical experience of the Berg or Genz Benz I'm afraid.
5. Have another bump for a great amp, I was told yesterday (by a rather splendid bassist) that it was the best tone I have ever had (and I've gone through a lot of rigs over the last five years thanks to this place!!)
6.
My most righteous rig of all now comprises a Super 12 + Compact + Midget. I've had to buy an 1100W power amp to do it justice. Now all I need is that gig at the O2 ...
You madman! The S12 is a stonking cab, why would you need more than that on its own?! What amp are you aiming for? I'm now running an S12 with a GK MB Fusion and I have been reliably informed by everyone that it is the best sound I've had
7.
Tim C? Nah, Carol Kaye recorded bass on this album
8.
Although last week on Later he was using GK.
I believe either the Acoustic deal is no more or he's just using GK over here as it's easier to source. Threads on TB about it but I got bored of them
9.
I've not checked the web, but I would have thought the config would have been prior to then?
Good point, I guess they (claim they) did the first bass-specific 4x10 but the format no doubt predates them.
10.
So which company started the 4x10" on 1x15" stack thing?
Was it TE perchance? Didn't they claim to have made the first bass-specific 4x10?
11.
I have used /owned/stolen various makes and model of each and a 1x15 has always been bassier to the ear (not interested about the technical bit) than 4x10 with or without tweeters.
Not being interested in the technical bit is the problem. You're completely misunderstanding WHY you think the 15 is bassier than the 4x10. Ah well
12. Does your 4x10 have a tweeter and if so is it on?
13.
I know you are the expert here Bill but goes higher or lower is a red herring because as I said before if both cabs are of a similar quality running off the same amp hence the same EQ settings then the 15 will be producing more of the lower frequencys than the 4x10 even if that 4x10 could handle more. Also the horn is much more likely to be in the 4x10 if your rig is configured that way. If its so wrong why does every pa system have this config too?
PA is a different matter as the tops only have the high frequencies and the subs the lows. A bass rig with 4x10 and 1x15 will be running both full range. And why would a 15 produce more lows than a 4x10 with the same EQ settings? That's utter nonsense methinks
14. If it has a blue light then you absolutely need to keep it
15. Cheers for the heads up, this looks really cool My first amp was an Escort Bass combo
16. This amp is awesome, the tubes really sing and the OD "channel" is much sweeter sounding than the MB500 IMHO. Bargain for someone
17. This is a great sounding cab, cannot believe it's still here!
18. Nice little review, let us know how you get on
19. Swapped the MB 500 for an MB Fusion, very happy I did so,this rig is phenomenal! The MB200 was powering our drummer's monitor, long story...
20. Someone snap this up, great little amp and a lot more "pokey" than the 200W would suggest IMHO
21. PS I have just swapped an Eden WT550 for the GK MB Fusion so can totally see where you're coming from hence my recommendation!
22.
never tried one tbh I was always under the impression GK was more in the smooth clear and crisp tone bracket
Not at all. Totally in your face and aggressive if you want it to be and they both have Boost "channels" for grit.
23. Gallien Krueger MB500 or MB Fusion would probably do nicely
24.
That's pretty impressive. When I ran your MB200 through my Compact/Midget stack, the results were very good ... but actually persuaded me to buy an MB500 instead. That Super 12 must be quite astonishing.
To be fair it was when I was using chorus that it got REALLY silly. I liked it
25. I destroyed my band the other night with my MB200 thru my newly acquired Super 12. Amazing cab, just like 51m0n says. Hey, Simon says buy Barefaced...
