1.
I've tried to get together a band to do it many times but I just can't get the musicians around here, even just a basic drums/bass/guitar/keyboards/vocals setup. What I want to do is 1970s funk/disco like Chic, Sister Sledge, Rose Royce etc. but I've found that drummers and guitarists in particular who are up to it are virtually impossible to find. Rock and Indie is so popular because it's relatively easy to play.
Correct and true.. same all over. If something is difficult most people just want the easy option so they stay in the ol comfort zone. Craptastic.
2. Yes, by ear is best.. the more you do it, the easier it gets. Just another tip which hasnt been mentioned. For hearing the bassline a bit more clearly a good set of headphones really can help. Try it.
3. Nick sold me a lovely Cort bass.. great man to deal with, very helpful and he does a good packing job! Cheers Nick. John
4.
While I think wireless is a great idea from a safety standpoint (and of course safety is important), I would be too embarrassed to use a wireless system in a pub / small venue. I'd feel like one of those middle-aged rockers who takes a rack of 6 perfectly preserved expensive guitars to play an hour of '60s covers at the Dog n' Duck.
Yeah I hear ya but one of my regular pub gigs is just so difficult to get a sound I invested in a wireless purely for sound checks. Turns out I just love the freedom of it but ya wont see me jumping up on things.. well within reason!
5.
I've not had this personally happen to me, though a 'colleague' had an early 90's Stingray that did the same as this about 3-4 years from new. Apparently it was put down to a paint defect. As I recall it ended up as a refinish though I think EB may have picked up all/some of the tab.
Thanks for that. Its an early 90s alright, I wonder where EB would tell me to shove it if I looked for a refinish
6. Any other suggestions on this... anyone?
7.
I remember those but not fondly, sorry. I doubt it's got any collectable value unless you got it signed by Jesus.
He signed behind the neck of my old Westbury.. Honest, he did!
8.
It's a bit late but: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI
9. Hi All, Any ideas what I should do about this.. It started cracking and flaking (bad skin!) last year and is steadily getting worse. Ive no plans to sell this bass so a DIY job will do unless its a serious issue. Its a StingRay and I look after it very well, ie never expose it to extreme temperatures, no sharp buttons or buckles etc. Mystery to me why this happened in the first place! Any advice appreciated, thanks. John
10. Yep.. put all the banjo players in the same room.
11. Freebird.. for a gig on Sunday. The YT vid with just the bassline was a great help. Leon was some dude! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJaB4K-86TI
12. Oh.. Ill have to stand corrected so!! EDIT.. ^^^ this is closer to the mark. I jumped in there way too fast!
13. Its an Alembic. Worth a few quid that.
14. Heres a bit of it from when the bass comes in |-----------------------|------------------|------------------| |-----------------------|------------------|------------------| |-----------------------|--5-6-7-5-------|------------------| |--2/7--5-7-5-6-7-|---------------7-5-|--7-5-7-5-6-7-| sorry about the poor tab (anyone know a good tab-maker?) but hopefully that'll get ya started, its mainly just a feel thing and keep it tight. Good luck. BTW its tuned down a half step
15.
There's no science involved, it's God's will. On the third day he created the bridge (the rest of the week was spent on floating trems) and he saw that it was slightly wonky.
Class
16. Thanks for the comments Jennifer Main reason for posting this was to encourage people to practise and dont get put off if not getting instant results. Yep, nothin like a bit of hard graft!
17. I think there may be a linear pot on my MM.. gain is all at the last quarter turn and very sensitive.
18. Anyway, the original post was asking about ANY information on right-hand technique.. Not how to hold his bass or fret his strings!! Ah well.
19.
3. try to nail the next gig.
Ah yes, thats the way to go. Practice is so important too, with and without band. Go forth and blow some minds
20. Hey good people, Just a quick note referring to the merits of good hard practice. Im 41 been playing bass over 25 yrs but around 6 months ago decided to try to take it a bit more seriously. I went to a top guy here in Dublin (Bill Bergin.. Ace!) Had some lessons and then started a practice regime, usually 2 hrs a day. Major work done on my lazy fingerstyle with right hand and general work on my stamina also. I play with 2 bands, do allsorts. You name it. But last nite doing a sit down 3 piece gig it all just started to come to the surface.. I couldnt believe the stuff I started playing! Fast 16ths, Prestia style (Ill never be nearly as good as Rocco!). Lots of melodic riffs and just my own stuff but tight and in control. Must add that the drummer was really nailing it. Sometimes when you practise it doesnt really seem like youre making headway but yes, keep it up and you'll get the same payoff. O yea!! John
21. Hi.. X-Music in Ballymount, D.12 or Jimi's Music in nearby Walkinstown, give Jimi a ring on 01 456 9586 Have you considered buying from the folks on here? It costs about €60 to have a bass shipped from UK.. some lovely basses on sale. Good luck with the purchase.
22.
Sorry, I thought you were talking about the banjo with it's neck sticking out of a skip there for a moment!
Ah banjos... why do they just make me think "wire-cutters"
23. Hmm, well Ive been round the block a few times so have a v down to basics view on this. As an ex smoker I know the story, I think. If you want to be stoned and play with a band play with these guys.. doubt if it will lead to any development of your playing skills though. If you want to progress as a bassist find a band who take it just a little more seriously and the chances are the drummer will keep time aswell... be kind to yourself! Just my view and all the best, John
24. Definitely learn the correct technique. You could end up doing yourself an injury gripping it like that. Well you seem to know what you should be doing.. so go and do it! Best of luck with it too..
