1. Yep, just practise. Pay particular attention to the first few songs in the set at rehearsals, get em really tight. As the nite goes on the punters wont notice a few mistakes later in the set due to their consumption of our good friend Alcohol!
2.
definetly too infrequent....the fretboard looked dry and dirty so thought i would give it a clean before taking it to the moffat bass bash. Im just not a fan of the new string sound so tend not change them too regular. My guitarist says he changes his strings twice a month.......so that kind makes me feel guilty hahaha
Thats ok for guitar, strings are cheap. Give your old(ish) strings a good clean with meths and just be sure to get rid of any residue before you put em back on. Then just feel the love.. if u dont ur in the wrong band :-)
3. I would love to try one of these.. the 4 string above looks very playable. Id say these will become quite popular.
4. Hercos are great, they have a 'grippy' part so less slippage.
5.
There's also this old technique - 1) Put superglue on the finger tips of one hand 2) Place them on your forearm and hold them there 3) Let glue dry 4) Rip fingers off forearm, taking skin from forearm with them 5) Repeat for other hand = extra thick fingers!
Pioneered by Mr Stevie Ray Vaughan, I believe.. for his fretting hand!
6. Pop, dont pop.. surgical spirit, super glue.. good luck! Let it heal anyway but the main thing is to learn better technique/practice and avoid this in future. Hope it works out ok on sat.
7. Around 1982 got my first bass, had Ibanez on the headstock, £28 second-hand.. must have been a copy, long gone now. First bass amp, '64 Fender Bassman and matching cab £50.. still have the head thankfully. I believe its worth a few quid now. Here it is..
8. Schaller straplocks from stringsdirect.co.uk Got some from them last week, great selection and only about £15 a set. Fast delivery too. Id imagine theyd supply you with a Hipshot detuner aswell but I havent checked.
9. Would be a good idea to bring it to a reputable luthier to get it sorted out.
10. Lately Ive been enjoying The Weight, we do it every week and it goes down well. Also some CCR gets the punters (and myself) singing along
11. Yep, excellent combo at a silly price. Paid way more than that for mine!
12.
Is it normal to find that every other open string sounds in tune, then the open G sounds effing horrible? It's driving me to distraction. In fact everything on the G sounds out of tune to me until I get up towards D. Am I just fingering the notes wrong on the D or do I have a bad string or... Grr. It's so annoying. Everything sounds lush and then I play the G string and it sounds like I sexually abused someone's cat. I have a new-found respect for violinists. Honestly everything is golden except the G string in the lower positions. Is this me, the string, or normal neophyte bass student toss I just have to work through?
Its just you, you are quite mad :-)
13.
So what do you mean Mr Musicman69?...... detune or not? 4or5 or a detune? in your opinion? not having a go( )just don't get your point I often miss the point here ....sorry
Ok Mr Witterth, I was referring to jtuk post.. I think the OP should know after a couple o weeks at most if drop D is going to suit and not to waste months deciding what to do. Its easy to get sidetracked with stuff that is actually of no benefit at all. Best to be on the look-out for it and nip it in the bud, so to speak.
14. or just burn it out, Hendrix style.. sorry just gettin my coat* ps.. if its easily accessible you can cut a groove for a flat blade screwdriver with a junior hacksaw. Good luck with it.
15. Hmm .. 18 months at drop D then, what, another 18 if you decide you like it? Lets not be hasty here.
16.
I've been in a similar situation a couple of years back. On reaching the chorus of a rather under-rehearsed cover of "The One I Love" my mind went completely blank. I played a series of notes that were patently wrong and decided that maybe the guitar chords would give me a clue. Looked round at the guitarist to see what he was playing so at least I could busk through some root notes, only to see him frantically tuning up, as he assumed that the out of tuneness was his fault and not because I'd lost the plot!
Ha.. yeah. This is something commonly (albeit not fondly) known as a train-wreck. Someone loses the plot, not neccessarily the bassist mind, and it sets off a chain of events which is usually irretrievable, sounds like a bucket o spanners falling down the stairs... So, bassist looks blankly at geetar-man, he stares back... drummer is still staring into space anyway! It usually ends when someone just ignores everyone else, blags his way through and the sheep follow. Great fun!
17. Kinda pricey but the last Alembic I played had loads of top, and then some more.. unreal! Dirty, worn out old strings on it too and it still sparkled.
18. Was a guy on here trying to sell a saw the other week... I wonder if he's responsible for the carnage I see.
19.
Wost song I have ever had to play was a Kings Of Leon one... er... Fans! That's it! If you've never heard it then prepare yourself for this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1hgRDRc3ug
Maybe my taste is just crap but I think that song is quite good, nice feel, dynamic. I like his quirky basslines.. geetar solo is poor though.
20. If youve played it thousands of times its been good to you and probably paid for the bass your playing it with!!
21.
Mustang Sally's crap? I can only think that you've never played it properly! You've all listed some great songs. I'd love to play any of them as long as they're played well, but I don't like playing ANTHING if it's played badly.
I agree, most of the songs being mentioned were hits. Why? Because they had great groove and feel.. Mustang Sally is a perfect example. If the drummer is on the money you cant help but enjoy that stuff.
22. Hey thanks for that, one of my favourite basslines. Video is fine.
23. We gotta sort this out Don, you makin my guys nervous... Cant go flashin that 5 string round like its no-ones business!!
24. Oh yea? Who sez? Ya think ya got this thing covered, ya better watch out! My guys are lookin into it so leave it at that.. capiche?
