1. Good to play with a machine, you only need to punch the information in once! Good to play with a real drummer for groove, if you can find a real drummer. Hens teeth.
2.
Depends what you mean by worth anything. With very few exceptions there's nothing that makes it into pre-CBS Fender value territory, but as the esteemed Mr Twit says, most JapCrap commonly sells in the £100 - £400 (ish) bracket. Where it becomes interesting is when this stuff (still commonly regarded as old, cheap & throwaway junk by the people who find it in their lofts & garages) turns up at car boots, charity shops, on Gumtree etc for buttons, which allows 'orrible gyppos like me the opportunity to buy (for example) 2 old guitars for £35, run them under the tap & then collectively Ebay them for £320. There aren't too many bargains on Ebay any more because it's overrun by the sort of people who will pay pretty decent money for JapCrap, and plenty of people with their grimy car boot Avon Les Pauls, insisting they're "Lawsuit Ibanez with a different name". Fun & games. Wanna buy a Matsumoku L6S copy? J.
Ha, ha.. think Ill pass on the L6S Thats a grand way to make a few quid for yourself, I was laughing at the 'bin jumping gyppo' on your avatar, penny has dropped now! Great that old basses are still sought after and worth a few quid. Ill keep an eye on this thread and try to learn some more about JapCrap!! Keep up the good work man.
3.
Absolutely loads of it comes up on ebay, so the selling value is well known. I don't know the market like others, but just recently Westone Thunder basses have been going for about £100. Loads of stuff goes between £100 and £200. And the higher end such as SB1000 basses will go for several times that. When I was a teenager I played bass. I had an Ibanez Artist bass. When I looked to see what one was worth, I only found one on sale, being sold by (as others describe him) "That German w***er" for £800! That doesn't set market value as that guy sells all sorts of stuff for unbelievably high prices. Or, "attempts to sell", I should say. However, I found a post where someone in the US had bought one for US$500 and considered that a notable bargain. Did you see the picture of the Rickenfaker "project" that Jon sold for £180? Have a look in the Rickenfaker thread.
Thanks for that. Prices arent too bad then, Ive seen a few that look ok but probably dont play very well. Seems like people just like basses.. which is good. My first bass was an Ibanez from the 70s, havent been able to find a pic of anything similar on the web. I sold it for £30 in '84. Couldnt find the Rickenfaker thread but have seen a few of those on here.. its all new to me. Its just luck that I was never duped into buying one at full price!
4. Sound advice that ^^ Heed it!
5. Not discounting any of the above the bottom line is.. revenue want to see returns from bona fide accountants, and they will advise you to just pay enough to keep revenue off your back, the law of the jungle still applies! Unless youre skint or making a fortune that is.
6. Just wondering.. is any of this fine-crafted firewood worth anything? I know yis love it but any monetary value?
7.
"I'll get me coat so.. (shouldnt have mentioned those 7ths!) " Sorry John i should have explained my self better
Dont mention it. I didnt realise you were seeking some more advanced info.. which I dont have but glad to see it was forthcoming. Learning from this myself now! Such a cool website this!
8.
You can't say that really, there are so many other factors to consider. Fretboard radius for one. 1mm is very little relief.
True but if it doesnt work he can put it back as it was.. no harm to try it. As has been said already best bet is to get it set-up professionally.
9.
ive checked the truss rod. ive got approx half a mill bow in the neck. probaly not enough is it?
Half a mill should be ok, just raise the action a bit at the bridge.
10. Sound isnt great on that but I think your action is too low for your playing style, try raising it a little and you should get a cleaner attack.
11.
I have all my own gear and transport. I'm also pretty good. Would be keen to hear of any original projects requiring a bassist. I'm already in a covers band so that's - ahem - covered. I only want to hear from serious and talented bands. I have drawn comparisons with John Entiwstle due to my fret speed, rolling basslines and laid back persona. You can hear some of my playing here and here. I want something I can get down to. Email me at [email protected]
Yea Roger was just sayin he needed a substitute bass player the other nite. Tell ya what.. Ill pm ye his number.
12. Think I seen an 'accomplished' bassist advertising here today.. Mexican stand-off coming up? All fun and games till someone get a g-string in the eye
13. But playing progressively worse kips of pubs, social clubs, anywhere that will have you.. Day job.
14.
"... yer bedda slur, da mustang da!" Worst-case scenario: Every weekend, for the rest of your miserable life.
HA
15.
Do you have a Trace Elliot by chance?
Ive a Trace and it gets clicky when I use a pick.. it completely harmless and doesnt affect the overall sound. Actually adds some attack if its rocky stuff. Lower the mids a bit if its annoying you.
16. Im telling you folks, its 99% OCD! Guitars are well made these days and generally stay in tune.
17.
Is standard of living important to you.??
Yea, its a no brainer.. get a day job, then enjoy playing. If you get paid its a bonus.
18. I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan in London years back, he just kept it tuned as he played.. made 3 or 4 tiny adjustments during a 2 1/2 hr set. Rory Gallagher used to do the same. Class!
19.
when I was teaching, I used to encourage and work on little tricks and party pieces, so that during a gig if there was such a gap then step forward the bass player and entertain the crowd for 30 seconds or so. As I was working with rock/metal bassists it worked quite well.
Yes but with all due respect, people pay in to a gig to hear and see live music.. not tricks or party pieces.
20. Our guitarists both have Les Pauls, top of the range ones too but they constantly tune (albeit silently) between every song. I think its just 'comfort tuning' as someone mentioned because we start each half of set with 5 songs together and they dont go out then. In fact Ive never heard either guitar out a bit! Its an OCD thing.
21. I'll get me coat so.. (shouldnt have mentioned those 7ths!)
22. Hi Frank (from a fellow Irishman!) Some theory will help you so check a thread here, its 'The Majors Bass Boot Camp' top of the list in Theory section. For playing over basic chords you will find the root, third and fifth generally sit in there well along with the octave of course, if its a 7 chord add the 7th and mix it up (without getting yourself mixed up I hope!) Best of luck and stick with it. John
23. Lovely bassline.. Roger has such feel and groove, sublime. I could start listing tracks but no need for that.
