Emergency amp needed: Advice on options please.
BassAdder60 replied to Marvin's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have the MarkBass LM IV and chose it over the 58R because it has a metal case not plastic There is a Laney Digbeth 500H for sale on here too As Lozz suggest perhaps the new Peavey is a good choice I had the Orange LBT and it’s a great amp and warm sounding I play rock / pop / indie / punk -
That’s a good point My aim of using a pick was to sound fuller ( as achieved with fingers ) but with the variation in tone and dynamics that a pick can only give in my opinion. The finger played tone has a warmer fuller depth to the sound as example Living on a Prayer never sounded right played with a pick but more right with fingers but then other songs such as Don’t Believe a word, Basket Case / American Idiot sounded better with a pick To save changing methods during a gig ( also changing EQ, volume etc ) making one method suitable for all is tough. I found I could do every song with fingers and some sounded wrong and when I played all songs with a pick the tone was on some songs lacking in fullness

Resurrection this thread and I’m using the LM IV and it definitely works for classic and modern rock. The old school control allows warmth and vintage feel I think they pair well with their own cabs as the EQ frequencies are different to other brands Playing a PBass with a pick with mine and it sounds good Previously I’ve used Ashdown and Ampeg and it’s definitely as good if you want your actual bass tone to shine
-
They must be a brand for the USA as not seen them in UK
-
I like the JD Delrin 500 in 1mm and 1.5mm and they are very grippy Normal teardrop shape
-
Also what sounds lacking in isolation can sound perfect with the band Definitely helps if you tweek the EQ to pull back some of those massive increase in mids when you use a pick Some songs it works but I’ve found reducing mids slightly works but don’t overdo it as you then get buried in the mix
-
Yep the RM series are great amps for sure
-
I often angled my cab slightly inwards instead of straight to the audience ie it would aim at the gap between singer and main PA cabs / bass bin leaving space for myself to not stand in front of it all night ( I never went through the PA )
-
It makes sense Use a pick and mids increase a lot sounding like less bass. Increasing the bass doesn’t work but cutting back the mids does bring the fuller tone back but with that glorious pick tone you can’t get using fingers. Well it’s possible of course ( Steve Harris as example ) but lots of string replacements and a ton of gear !

I find between 1mm and 3mm about the best gauge for me
-
Bigger as in gauge I agree but there becomes a compromise of playing technique if too thick

I’ve discovered that in my search for a good PBass pick tone ( fuller and deeper ) that adding bass wasn’t the answer Im finding the following makes the difference in a close enough to finger tone kind of way Turn PBass tone control to around 50% Leave amp bass tone set as normal Reduce low mids to appear to make sound deeper ( not too much ) as a large scooped tone doesn’t cut through ) Turn high mids to give a little bite but nothing excessive and leave treble around mid way ( no cut or boost ) This is where using the amps “ shape” feature that you find on some amps or Ultra Low etc doesn’t really work for this pick tone ( it’s too boomy and sucks too many mids out ) Its more of a slight reduction in low mids that the increase in mids pick playing doesn’t need ( if you want a fuller sound ) Still got the clank if you need it ( increase bass tone more ) but it’s a good place to start on the amp Also found using a standard sized pick was easier to palm mute when required instead of a triangle pick that in truth isn’t that much larger in terms of grip.

Funny thing after gigging an SVT-CL and V4B I now use a MB LMIV amp ! Honestly it’s nearly as good !!! Definitely easier to move around
-
I’m in a similar situation today after packing it all in and then missing playing bass I jam once a month also rock covers and it’s a blast and less pressure, more like a social occasion ! We have said if we found a singer ( unlikely ) we could do a few gigs such as festivals or support but not the regular pub circuit where rock seems to have died on its feet !
-
They admit using sub standard components because that’s all they could get !! What a terrible attitude as a business! I wonder if they would be as keen to replace any early failures FOC !

MarkBass Little Mark IV and MB58R 102 Energy cabs

My guitarist said when he saw it he thought it would sound boxy and struggle against a loud drummer. Loads of full bass and loud soon convinced him otherwise! -

Used my new rig with my PBass at a jam session with a loud drummer and guitarist playing rock It sounded very punchy and loud using just one cab and I’m very pleased with it. Those cabs are amazing weighing 11kg !! Incredible So thus far I’m very pleased I’m back playing again -
Yeo the onboard Ashdown compressor ruins your sound and cuts volume. Not hearing many say they like it so as mentioned a low cost pedal out front is better. Might be partly why you’re not seeing enough input gain
-
Might be worth fitting a new pre amp valve ? The EQ that affects the signal the most is the Low .. boost that and the needle should be hard into the red at times if the gain is around 1pm to 3pm and you play firmly finger style and more do if a pick player
-
Also the EQ boosts can affect the gain levels so always go back and check the gain isn’t excessive and the clip light only comes on momentarily in the main. All valve amps ignore that and use ears as a guide ! I have a MB LM4 and you will get your flat and scooped from the selector control and vintage by adding more old school control ( clockwise ) Its a very loud amp so keep your master volume low until you have everything else set how you want it

Most pub music venues have realised a solo singer or duo, open mic night is a cheap way to give live music paying £150-£200 As a band it should be around £300-£400 but most small pubs cannot afford it paying £200 -£300 tops Plus the old bands play too loud issue is often a reason not to get re-booked if they are struggling locally with noise complaints. I don’t think pub venues have a clue about band quality or how good they are and book the same old bands each month as a lazy approach to booking music
-
TC got purchased I think so not sure where their future lies Behringer now own them eek !
-
Just out of interest are you mostly a pick or fingers player ?? I found the V4B to be the best sounding amp with both techniques especially adding Ultra Low when pick playing Couldn’t fault the sound and the feel you get playing an all tube amp. I always felt mine really sounded it’s very best second set onwards ( IE been played loud for around an hour ) Power tubes well warmed up and it just sounded better.

I’m loving my Player II as well 🤟👍

We would sound check every gig and the singer ( female ) used IEM and every time first song in people said the vocals were too quiet ! Many factors play a part, crowd noise, adrenaline, and IEM when only the singer uses them !
