  1. I never understood the anti-intellectual mindset. Wouldn't you want things to be done by people who know what they're doing rather than just cocky people who just wing it? It's not just a UK thing, just look at what happened during the height of Covid in the US and the widespread anti-vax movement (my libertarian-Republican FIL to this day refuses to accept that he needs a vaccine because he's not vulnerable, missing the point entirely). I think "wonk" is the US equivalent of "boffin" but I could be wrong.
  2. Shall I tell them about your foray into playing what Charles Berthoud refers to as a "six string piccolo bass"?
  3. I've only ever played one gig that big, where as you say I could see about three rows back thanks to the stage lights and then it was sillhouettes for about 50m back so I didn't appreciate the size of the crowd until we'd finished the first number and the cheer was more than I was expecting.
  4. What's annoying is one of them is actually a member of this site, and just a quick "hey guys, tell me about this brand" would have elicited plenty of background info.
  5. The Vintage Modified series were fantastic. I still miss my VM 70s Jazz.
  6. You can do that into Soundhound and it might find it
  7. Made the mistake of watching - or trying to watch - the Anderton's review, and remembered why I don't watch them anymore. Why oh why can't they do the bare minimum of research into the products they're promoting - one of the reviewers didn't even know how to pronounce Sadowsky correctly for pity's sake.
  8. I'm sure that technically roasted maple is better, but I agree that unroasted is much nicer aesthetically, especially as the fret markers are likely to be nigh-on invisible on dark stages with roasted maple.
  9. The four string versions are still €799 on the Warwick site and this hasn't changed since they were introduced. Guitar Guitar suggests RRP is about £720, so at £899 it's a £180 increase.
  10. Anderton's have some of these in stock now: https://www.andertons.co.uk/search?search=sadowsky metroexpress
  11. Indeed, after spending the equivalent sum as for a Squier they'd be an excellent mod platform. £150 for the VTC preamp, £10 for a proper headstock decal, £20 for a Hipshot string retainer, £250 for noise-cancelling pickups, and for less than £800 you'd have a banging bass.
  12. If they've let you down in the past they'll let you down in the future, is a good rule of thumb I reckon. If they had good reasons to quit last time and didn't really have a choice I'd give them a second chance, but if they either ghosted you or were a bad bandmate before they quit then they can do one.
  13. Exactly! I have this argument with our keyboardist every time we start learning a new song and he complains about it being too complicated or "produced". I just show him a live performance of it being different to the recording (Club Foot by Kasabian being a good example) and then he settles down.
  14. I really wish someone could beat this argument into Jeff Berlin so he'd finally shut up.
  15. I'm sure I don't play anywhere near all of the basslines I can play note-for-note perfect, but I think what I play sounds close enough and good so I'm not overly fussed.
  16. I suspect they're clearing the decks before introducing the new SMX ones.
  17. If it's any consolation there a lot of famous bassists that don't get it right either...
  18. Well props to him for being up for it, I've seen vids of other rock stars *cough* Bon Jovi *cough* looking very affronted at the suggestion that they do a turn.
  19. I wonder if he normally kept a combo amp in his car or if he was just expecting to be called into service that day.
  20. The Flamingo ballroom is now a Morrisons. The local nostalgia groups are very grumpy about that turn of events.
  21. I know that works with eBay purchases because I've done it, but does it work with Reverb as well?
  22. Speaking personally I can appreciate the technicality where someone's playing a blizzards of notes, but quite often it just seems really out of place or just showing off for the sake of it. Pretty much every time I feel like that is when players are playing fast slap and all you can hear is the clackityclackityclackity of the string on the frets but there's no time for any kind of timbre of note to be heard because the next fret clank is only a tiny fraction of a second behind it. The problem isn't that I don't like the sound of it - I love the sound of it but would actually like to hear it!
