1. Thanks for posting NJE - sound like a top live act.
2.
Carvin
http://www.bassgear.co.uk/product-category/bass-amps-and-cabs/carvin-amps/ these guys are fabulous to deal with and I have the 500 head from them - lovely! I'd love the chance to see and hear some Traynor gear over here - highly respected valve gear at a fraction of the price of most other stuff available in the UK.
3.
Nah. High end basses are for middle-aged men with lots of disposable income. The same market that Porsche are in. I've never actually seen anyone gig a Fodera though, maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't.
Not sure if this is the case with boutique basses - I'd say it is the limited edition custom shop runs by the big brands that are specifically produced for this market.
4.
Very nice indeed. Been comparing it with the album version & I'm torn between the two. JJ's vocals on the studio cut are much more restrained & fit the song better, but there's a rather syrupy string section over it that does it no favours. The understated Hammond in the TV version works much better. Any idea who the band was? Big Jim Sullivan was TJ's guitarist for many years, so that's a likely candidate for one slot, but the rest…?
Funny, I did the same and much prefer the TV version - much nicer vibe. Was also wondering about the bass player - will try and find out some more about the TV shows.
5. Interesting arrangement with bass to the fore, keys gently providing the chords and guitar attractively noodling. Just thought it was really quite unusual, and of course, an exquisite performance by Janice Joplin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVpDOIPx_sY
6. Nothing like having to be totally on the ball - we had a dep drummer last night - her regular gig is with Music Box - Herbie Flowers' quartet Great to play with, I didn't realise my job could be so easy
7. 'cos if it was base we'd end up playing sole music.
8. It is one of those dreaded PubCo pubs and has been under temporary for ages. Hope they have got a new team in (and hope they don't get shafted by said PubCo as so many seem to) as it had a good reputation as a music pub.
9.
My bad! But two years is a long time in cyber-world and there must have been two gazillion mentions of Jamerson on BC since 2011
10. Never gets a mention? (well it was two years ago I guess) http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1401949
11. Mine was starting commercial gardening late in life - hedgetrimmers, strimmers etc. Fortunately doesn't seem to have had too much of an adverse affect on bass and guitar playing.
12. Can you get black leather studded ones - that would sort the rock & roll side of it! (I'm a Reynauds sufferer so you have my sympathies)!
13. Given your location Bass Gear in Twyford is an absolute must. Also, Wunjo's have taken over the dreadful Bass Cellar in Denmak St. Realy nice people, loads of fabulous basses but not great on backline which they admitted they would always struggle to stock in any depth given the size of teh place.
14.
If you are really set on keeping a four string bass, but want five string low notes, then why not get a set of five string strings and just not use the G string?
Rotosound (and I'm sure others) do a 4 string set with a 130 bottom string.
15.
Just about to jump in the car to leave, it's a 3 hour trip each way, would have been much cheaper to post it!
Not the same though! I did about a two houd detour as part of a seven hour trip to pick my Shuker up - worth every bum-numbing mile
16.
I received a job request this morning that requires fretless playing. That's the fourth request I have had in recent months, but I haven't owned a fretless bass for years as I never got called to use it. Fretless bass was very common in the 80's and 90's, but I hear very little of it in today's music. Is it making a come back?
Just a thought, there is such a glut of mellow, acoustic, singer-songwriter type stuff out there - perhaps the thinking is that fretless would suit the laid back vibe? Sorry, realise this is a sensible response and nowhere near as much fun as Disco Spitfires!
17. Spalted Maple - I don't really like natural finishes on basses but drool over any spalted maple bass or guitar that I see!
18.
Zero frets, I'm convinced they make a huge difference. They probably don't
I've got zero frets - makes a huge difference
19. PRS (guitars and basses not the Performing Rights Society) - I hate them with a passion, even more now I have one of their gig bags - thinking of unpicking all the embroidery!
20.
Much better. Looks like actual effort went into designing the body! I have a Washburn Taurus with a similar body shape. Curvalicious. Nice!
Got to disagree here - this one looks like a lot of thought went in to making it look like every other bass out there whereas the purple one looked like someone was having a bit of fun designing something a bit different.
21. Jon Shuker - he made me a fabulous 5 string fretless P - 8th row down on the gallery: http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/pbassgallery.html (and no, not a sales pitch)!
22.
And Cort make G&L Tributes, Lakland Skylines, some Fender and Ibanez models so the pedigree is there. The GB74 is a fantastic "Jazz'a like" but with a Jazz/MM pickup combination and coil tapping.
Yes, GB74 is a great bass. Can't believe they get overlooked in the headlong rush to Squier, they are far superior IMO.
23. Amazing, bought some acoustic guitar strings off them 9 days ago, put them on and the top two strings went off (large patches of tarnish) as I was playing. Emailed to let them know, within an hour they replied and are sending a replacement set. The strings do have a good reputation so hoping it was a one off so won't name them here, just thought this was exceptional service from Strings Direct.
24. Some great basses by makers like Cort and Aria that have virtually no resale value so can be real secondhand bargains.
25. What was going to be our biggest, most credible gig to date turned out to be a bit of a wash-out. Outdoor gig with other bands including Tir na Nog and The Coal Porters. Heavens opened five minutes into the set and most of the audience fled to the relative safety of their tents. A few stalwarts braved teh rain (plastic ponchos over tie dye tee shirts - well it was a Grateful Dead Appreciation Society show)! At least the thunder and lightning held off until the headliners! Played well and band sounded great with proper PA, I did manage to completely forget one riff and it wasn't until 2/3 of the way home I remembered it!!
