1. Hi, and welcome to the forum. I am sure you will find the answer to your question here, and many more you will have in the future
2.
Depends how many i have when i pop my clogs! If i have two the nice one would go to my little brother and the other id probably auction on here.
An auction from beyond the grave..... As for me, well Mrs Arse, has said that she would keep one to remind her of me, (I have visions of her giving it a kick now and then for old times sake). The rest would be shared out between the two sprogs - the lad already plays bass in a band and the wee lass wants to learn guitar.....they are already arguing about who is going to get my first bass - nothing special but 35/36 years old......what I haven't told them is I'm going to be cremated and have my ashes sealed up in the cavity behind the pickguard before whichever one gets it......I haunt the bugger after I'm gone
3.
What would that involve? How else would you get that cool, mellow, warm, satisfying rumble-y feeling in your belly?
Methadone!!!! - great for withdrawal symptoms , maybe not so much of a rumble, but very mellow - but if you want that real rumble-y feeling, without the mellowness - I would suggest salmonella
I hope you don't mean a guitar?
Noooooooooo!!! ......a guitar would never be a substitute - I would rather have a piece of wood with 4 bits of string held in place with drawing pins - at leat it would allow fretting and plucking practice If the only other choice was a guitar........well filing my fingers down to the bone with a cheese grater and dipping the resultant stubs in a bowl of salt, sound remarkably pleasurable
4. Sorry - Me again..... I couldn't resist commenting on this track, as I did on the stuff you posted for your new band. Bloody hell - that was an assult on the senses - I am not much of a fan of the "tame grizzly bear" style vocals, but that was fun. There is some real quality musicianship in that track, along with some damn fine arrangement.....I am stating to think that any band you play in, get touched by the hand of ......... (insert name of desired deity here). Between this, the current band and your new metal project - you show a real capability on your instrument of choice respect....
5. I was always led to believe that "Cold Turkey" was frowned upon by the medical profession. Perhaps you should consult your GP and get a prescription for a bass 'substitute'
6. I think I covered one of my experiences in this post HERE, on the thread about playing in a band with people you don't get on with.
7. I was in a band with a self indulgent, egotistical guitarist I wasn't "fond of".... For some reason he kept speeding up during every song, and it all came to a head when Free's Wishing Well was going to take about 2 minutes from start to finish during practice.... Well I just stopped mid song and just looked at him - in a fit of temper he threw his microphone at me and it hit a Gibson EB3 I had on loan....and I kind of - blanked out........ The next thing I remember was the drummer pulling me off of the guitarist where I was trying to stuff the headstock of the EB3 down his throat......suffice to say it wasn't the proudest moment of my life - but possibly one of the most satisfying.
8. +1 to the above advice. I have played the VM fretless and was quite impressed with the sound and build for the money. As for the GR20 - I don't know how it would perform with a fretless, but make sure you get the GK2B or GK3B pickup for it - these are the bass versions, the GK3B is the latest model. Some places seem to be selling the GR20 complete with the GK3, the guitar version, which would probobly not work very well with a bass, as it contains 6 individual mini pickups in one unit, which is fitted so that each string sits above its own pickup. If anyone can add to this, or correct any misinformation - go ahead.
9.
My fender aerodyne Precision has got a p/j configuration, and it is wired so that the p pickup has stronger output. That is not a mod, it came like this from the factory. It is clear that the j pickup essentially adds definition to the P sound, but it is quite weedy when soloed. I wonder if that kind of wiring is the norm for P/J fenders
That just about sums up my Aerodyne 'P' - though mine has a bugger of a hum on the jazz pup (earthing is all good) wondered about a straight swap for a couple of SD's - just to give it that little extra kick- and to kill the hum (copper sheild at the same time) I also found that the Squier 'P' Special very good for tonal range. As for the Encore mentioned in the OP seems quite typical of their stuff, tone doesn't strike me as being that good, but quite a powerful output. - I watched my son in a showcase for new bands where the entire back line was supplied- most of them used Encores, and the bass really cut through - my son's Fender 50's 'P' couldn't be heard at all.......They were all told not to touch the back line as this was all sorted by the guys running the event.
10. way back in 1972 I heard Medicine Man by Barclay James Harvest - gave me my first introduction to bass, and I knew then that, that was what I wanted to play....... But some months later I heard Lord Of Light by Hawkwind (the version on the Doremi album - far better than the live version on Space Ritual) - and that was it - I never looked back
11. Just to add - there is some excellent musicianship on that song - which really shines through in the newer version. I would interested to hear an acoustic version of this - where the musicianship is stripped bare. I have also looked at your Myspace page - the few songs on there show a really good idea of your direction and your attitude towards what you do (although there appears to be a lot of missing pictures on the page, causing mis-formatting of some of the text - I assume this is due to an update in progress though). Now my health is improving, I want to start seeing "local" bands again,(I used to go to Leeds a lot to see various bands), and if I am ever nearby when you are playing - expect to see me in the audience. All that is left for me to say is - good luck for the future.
12. I quite like it - but I would be looking to change the pickguard to a plain one, black, white, gold or silver
13. Putting up both versions, so that I could listen to them back to back, was a damn good move on your part. The new version is exactly what I would expect, if I played a CD of your band - well polished, crisp production - coupled with a damn good, well performed song - but, and no critisism intended, if I were to see you live - I would prefer to hear it played more to the original version - as I think the newer style/arrangement could potentially lose something in a live mix. Please bear in mind that I am getting on a bit, and my ears probobly aren't up to what they should be, but that is how it strikes me - at the end of the day, you and the band are in charge of your music, and will do what you feel is right at the time - but my opinion, and it is only my opinion, is that if you can release stuff to the newer quality, but keep the raw energy that comes accross in the earlier version for a live set - it's win/win for you. Sorry - I used to do the odd gig review for one or two websites, (plus one up on the BBC, as a favor to the band), and I think the old reviewer in me came out during those comments.
14. How long ago did you injure your hand - it can take quite a while for the healing process to complete, and you say you injured your hand - was this tendon damage???? It may be worth seeing your GP and didcussing this with them. Physiotherapy may be recommended.
15. Tokai did the aluminium thing a while ago with the TALBO - Tokai ALuminium BOdy, which to me looked much better. Vinatge Guitars did a review Here, and gives the date as 1982. May catch on - may not!!!
16. I use a capo on occasion, due to nerve damage, which limits the movement of my left hand/arm/fingers - it's a solution to a problem - so that make me either gay or a numpty.... 1. Married, two children, divorced, new (female) partner - I think that rules out gay. 2. Started playing at 11 years old - now 47 years old - do the maths - numpty, I think not. Why do people on here seem to insist on being judgemental - as some-one pointed out - you proclaim to be open minded, but as soon as one little thing doesn't fit in with you perceived view of "acceptable", you start jumping up and down, insulting and critisizing people for being inventive and daring to "think outside the box" At the end of the day, does it matter how people play, and what technique, mechanical or otherwise, that people use - we are bass players, and above all, individuals.
17. Looking forward to the Robin gig on the 5th Feb. At the moment it looks like it'll be a real family outing - me, my son, my daughter, her new BF and my missus. I have always had a soft spot for Kiss, My daughter has just discovered them, my son is a total Bass nut and is hoping to get to see some classic rock, and Gene style basses, and the missus just loves live music - Pro, semi-pro, amateur, whatever.
18. Hi, and welcome to the forum from another Terry, also well into his 40's. I'm sure you will find the good folks here more than helpful and friendly.
19.
That's the problem - there isn't one! Which is why most discussions like this (and there are lots) are either random or take place in the JapCrap Spotting sticky on the Fleabay board. Is there enough demand for a specific JapCrap sub-forum, or at least a JapCrap Discussion sticky? J.
Judging by the amount of discussion in the e-bay links Japcrap tread, I would say either of the above would be good, there may be some people who would spend a lot of time in there, but it's also a place quite afew people would dip into from time to time. There also seems to be quite a few of these - "what is this, it says made in japan on it" - threads crop up.... all in all I would say it should be put to Ped and the rest and see what transpires.
20. I humble myself before your expansive knowledge, and I agree this should be returned to original topic - bring on the Antoria, Burrito (grabs coat and heads to Japcrap sub forum)
21.
Not great pics but should show similarity. Had a quick go on this today - really quite good. Cheers.
There is more than a passing resemblance there - there are slight differences in the tuners, string tree, and the pickup cover (the one on yours seems be slightly curved on top), with the only major difference being the single pickup/selector switch,, and the rosewood board. But that is lovely - it definately looks like part of the same family, right down to the type and colour of the body finish and strap buttons - and that is in far better condition than mine. I don't suppose you have any idea of a date for it.
22.
If it was mine I'd want to keep it original - rewind the pups & sort out the electrics, and some fret work (maybe just a level & crown, if you can get the relief out & there's enough metal left), because aesthetically you've done a great job of keeping looking good - right down to the ashtrays. If you were to put a different neck on it, you'd even have to move the bridge to compensate for the longer scale - & basically all you'd be keeping is the body wood once you did everything else. If you'd like my JapCrapTastic P to be going on with - it isn't lots of money! J.
Thanks for that Jon. Your right, since I posted those pictures, I really did think about trying to restore it - seems the best idea. It may well be a full re-fret, rewind the original pickup bobbins, and get the thing re-wired, with the neck the way it is, a re-fret may be enough to lower the action to make it playable. I did actually think about that P copy of yours, but I have just commited to a short scale fretless build from Prosebase.....mind you if you haven't sold it by the time I have some spare cash - I may just take it off your hands.
23. Grabbed this a day or two ago, and gave it a couple of runs through - Honest opinion????/ The two best tracks on the whole thing are......... 1. Tunnels - Tyrannosaurus Alan and 2. Hallux Valgus - Harijan. A majority of the other stuff assults these aging ears just a little too much. Now, I have only been known to dip my toe into the traditional Ska scene and have come accross one or two Ska/Punk bands that I have enjoyed on a night out (unknown/support for unknown bands) - so my opinion may not count for much.....but if you guys keep going the way you are - then I am sure that you will get your reward. Keep it up Edited for my atros....actroc......sod it - BAD spelling
24. May be an idea to pin a link to this in the For Sale section - some people may miss it, if it's left at the top here New sellers will probobly read the rules anyway - those with existing threads would potentially be the ones to miss it
25.
Hi. Your Angelica looks identical to my Columbus. Maybe the same factory? Cheers.
That interesting, because I have not seen another bass like this. Any chance of some pictures - would be interested in a comparrison. I was always a bit of a sucker for some of the low end Jap stuff - I well remember lusting after a Shaftsbury Rick copy way back, and I used to have a really nice Avon EB/SG style bass in a transparent goldy colour, that played rather well - that was part ex'ed for a '73 Fender Precision - now sadly long gone due to unemplyment in my early twenties (about 25/26 years ago) - I would like to replace that with an all original '62 (year I was born) or a nice late '70's all natural/maple one, a bit like Jon's Japcraptasic one thats in the For Sale section. - but not until I have lots of money.
