  1. Mark King's superb second solo album 'One Man' couldn't be more different from the Level 42 material -- no bass gymnastics of any sort whatsoever, just good songs. Here's an excellent live version of one of the tracks (featuring Gary Husband on drums and Mark's brother Nathan on guitar).
  2. That's definitely the Joe Frazier tone I far prefer that to his latter-day chorused sound.
  3. I'll be there, hopefully with my bestie @Witters if he can make it EDIT: although in a bizarre episode of deja-vu, it looks like I won't be playing this time either..!
  4. What a player this man is. I remember buying The Pasadenas' album purely because of his basslines.
  5. The last new-to-me band to make me go wow! was Frost*. Doubly so when I saw them live.
  6. Ok, as requested I've had a tidyup and removed the argumentative non-contributions. Valuable and informative topics/discussions like this one are part of what makes this place so good. Please let's not spoil it with petty nonsense. Can I suggest that people use PMs in future if they want to have a handbag fight? So. As you were.
  7. Met up with Chris earlier; swapped my Hartke amp for his cash. Nice guy and a credit to our forum
  8. Funkateer #1 is giving up playing live due to health issues.
  9. I've had these three strings since the late 18th century, never used them. A little surface tarnish here and there. Take one, two, or all three.
  10. Cool write-up, thanks I wouldn't bother with the Fender MM 5. I've tried one and it was no better than the Sire. I've never played a Sado so I can't comment on that.
  11. I play the verse and chorus riffs from You Can Leave Your Hat On (the Dan Reed Network version, minus the FX), as it has a good mix of everything -- lows, dusty end, slap/pull, and sustained notes. I just go round and round until I get the nod.
  12. Yup. If there's any 20 year olds out there who know more about reggae than David Rodigan (who at 67 is obviously far too old), I'd love to see 'em.
  13. And those are some very serious shoes to fill, whatever one keeps in one's trousers.
  14. We played a gig in a tent last year... we provided the PA and the boyfriend of one of our vocalists did the knob-twiddling duties, first time he'd done it for us. He's a recent sound engineering/production graduate. I took a walk out front during the set, and oh my word the FOH sound was sublime. We're a 12-piece band, lots of horns and stuff, so mixing us is not a small task, but I could hear everything clearly and in lovely detail and my tone was perfect. I could have kissed him. I'm really hoping he comes along as our engineer in future.
  15. I bet you there are quite a few young ladies on Patpong Road in Bangkok who'd give it a try too.

  17. Ah, it's the old "why don't they play something *I* like?" litany again. Well, if the Yolanda in question is Yolanda Charles, I'd watch it just for her. I'd wager that she's a better bassist than the vast majority of us here. The day I find live music to be no longer relevant, will be the day I sell all my gear and take up stamp collecting instead. The fact that everyone moans about different parts of his programme would tend to suggest that the balance is generally right.
  18. This, entirely. Every so often, I wonder about flogging all my CDs and vinyl, but then I start thinking along these lines and decide against it.
  19. Damn. Got all fingers and toes crossed for you.
  20. I always though 'fopp' was the noise the sht made when it hit the fan?
