I personally don't own one, but there are a lot of great reviews around on these Combi's. Perhaps not so much on this forum but there is a lot of Combi love on TalkBass http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...wall+combustion and of course on the Dingwall's own forum http://www.dingwallguitars.com/community/v...?f=2&t=1735

Bullsh!t! who told you that? Thee VT bass is a character pedal. plug it in any bass amp, whether a solid state, hybrid or all tubes and you will get the same great effect. I wouldn't leave home without it but... having said that, in the case of my Ashdown Drophead, which in itself perfectly emulates the sound of an Ampeg B-15 I find that I don't need that pedal to achieve "the vibe" however it is useful if you want to get a gritty distortion, without cranking up the amp to high volume.

Thanks for the reply but these pickup covers are the wrong fugging size, they are a lot bigger than the original and wont fit in the scratchplate holes. Not only that, the width between screws is much wider so I am not about to bodge my bass just for two dodgy pickup covers. I'll send these back to the sod that sold them to me and I leave you with warning to others not to buy them Don't buy any pickup cover from this man they are fake and probably from an Aria or Ibanez bass, certainly not Fender or Squier.
Excellent! Nice to hear about a recommended seller too.
Yes but I only know he was selling necks, so I don't know for sure if he also stocks bodies, best send him a quick email first.
There's a guy on ebay who gets the necks regularly he may be able to get you a body, he's names bluebass or something like that. I e-mailed him when I was thinking about getting a fretless neck, he was pretty helpful. Also he get's the necks then (dunno if he does it himself) lacquers them in a vintage style and puts fender decals on. Maybe he could do that with a body or something. Actually here's a link to a neck, you could PM him from there if you want. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Lic-Aged-Tint...=item4cf4e0b5e5
I recommend this seller as he is the one who got me my excellent Mighty Mite maple neck. His email addres is: and his name is Dave. You can buy with confidence from him directly via email and thus avoiding ebay mafia.

The guitarist in my band built himself a strat with a Mighty Mite alder body and a real Fender 90's neck has had it painted trans black on natural, he then slapped a pickguard loaded with Frailin pickups and the result is amazing. Personally I am very pleased with the MM neck on my P-Bass bitsa so yeah I can vouch for the quality of these. Warmoth bodies have been known to be the best but at a heck of a price compared to MM parts.

I've bought as set of 2 split pickup covers for my P bass in white but they look too bloody whitey, how do I make them look aged? I don't like the cream DiMarzio type they are too creamy I just want them off white sort of thing. Someone suggested to leave them soaking in cold tea all night, anyone got proof that this will actually work, or has other suggestions? Thanks

I've got an iPhone and there's tons of free metronomes apps that click, whistle, clunk and whatever, all very good from traditional to digital, none of which need winding up.

When it was first introduced, the electric Fender bass was intended to be played with a thumb as well as pizzicato, hence they placed the thumb (NOT THUMP) rest on the underside of the strings so that players could rest their little finger (pinkie) on the bar and pluck the strings with their thumB

ARRIVED!! CIJ Fender Matched CAR 62 RI Limited Run Jazz Bass
I changed my mind about importing a white B&B Fender Japan JB66 and paying a fortune in customs, handling and shipping. So I'll be picking this beauty up from John, who seems like a lovely bloke, in a week or two. I am rather excited now I think a pearl white plate would look nice on this, but maybe a bit OTT - what do you think?
Oh envious!! you lucky man, i was contemplaing it too and you've bit me to it, if I hadn't bought 2 Dingwalls in the space of 2 months I would have snapped that myself. (SERIOUSLY - keep a note of my username for future reference if you intend to pass it on later) -
He's a ponce and a poser, no bass has ever been that naturally road worn no matter how many times it's been played (not saying Sting did it himself) How often does he change his life story, in his autobiography he tells tales of when he was an infant school teacher - then re-tells the story that he was a senior school teacher! He's a great bass player though
I dislike him too, and I have personal reasons for this, met him a couple of times, to do with charity events, but I won't discuss this further here, safe to say that to me he is a ****er and that all that fuzz he did in the 90's to save the amazon forest and the tribes there, was only a facade to attract attention to his stardom like status as it was fashionable at the time just like Bono tried to get into politics and all that. As a bass player I was disappointed seing him live at the height of his career, back in the late 80's at a Police concert in Rome, with a bass strapped on his neck but with a back up bass player playing real basslines, right behind him in the shadows.

Thanks for all the advices, I will take it to a workshop to have it resolved. thanks again.

On the subject of fret sprouting, it is understood of course the it's not the actual fret which "sprout" but the neck wood receding instead. This can happen at anytime, to new or old wood and it depends on the environment in which the bass / guitar is stored. In my case I have a new "fresh" Mighty Mite" neck fitted to a Squier body. The neck was given 3 coats before fitting to the body, 2 coats of "amber" stain to give it that vintage aged look and a last coat being a nitro gloss seal. The neck was allowed to dry naturally in a airing cupboard for 4 days and eventially fitted to the bass. Now, two weeks later the wood is "adjusting" to my home temperature and as a result a bit of shrinking has taken place, there are no cracks at all in the coating which means that has taken well but the fret edges from the first to the last are edging out at either ends and feeling quite sharp in places. Is there a home remedy for this or will it need to be taken to a repairman to be filed? I was wondering if there is a safe method to re-nourish the timber to kind of reverse the process of shrinking with filing as the last resort. This is a whole maple neck with maple fingerboard by the way. Anyone experienced in this "fret sprouting" phenomena? Thanks

Low B, do you want me to sing it for ya?
I read somewhere that 51 pickup cover mutes were because the bass amps at the time couldn't handle unmuted.
Or something along those lines, however that opened a whole new can 'o worms cause Leo designed (*read bodged*) the Bassman amp to go with the 51 basses and what happened next?? they distorted like nobody's business and in turn the Bassman amp became "guitarist's best choice" of tube amp because of the natural distorsion they were getting out of them. LOL go figure.
Foam mutes over the neck pickup of a J or P will do more than just 'bugger up the tone' I'd have thought. Presumably mutes were kept at the bridge end. I think Fender put covers on 'cos they looked good as much as anything else - Telecasters originally had a cover for the bridge/back pickup and I doubt those were for mutes.
you know on the 51's Telecaster type P bass the mute was fitted on the metal cover which was placed on the single coil pickup dulling the sound on purpose to mimic that of a double bass, or so Leo though... *giggle*

too bad I have just sold a Squier CV P neck to pikeman for £50 but that would have brought your £60 bass up to £110 expenditure and one wonders if it's really worth it... There is a thing called "false economy" and another called "too good to be true" when something is that cheap, there's got to be a downfall somewhere... shame, because it looked a nice bass.
I like the sound of Js and Ps but have found Js lacking when in noisy, rock situations (eg my punk band). I would like to use my Bacchus Jazz in this situation however, rather than it sit at home as a lovely practice toy. So I googled the title of this thread and found some people suggesting that you can indeed use a Sansamp to beef up and fill out the sound of a J. Has anyone on BC done this and - most importantly - do you have any combination of pickup/control and Sansamp settings you would recommend?
Naughty boy! You should have kept that 51 Reissue CIJ I sold ya! If I knew you were going to pass it on to "unknown" I wouldn't have gone through all that trouble to set it up to the nines for you! After I had re-fitted the original bridge, I reset the intonation, adjusted the neck relief better than a plek machine, and even serviced the stiff machine heads with sewing machine oil... Lucky mr. unknown got a pukka bass! haha...
James Jamerson left his covers on his '62. He was quoted as saying, that Leo Fender "put them there for a reason."
and you're not wrong, cause in the old days, on the underside of the ashtrays they used to have foam mutes hence the reason for them but... problem is... they look lovely and everything but they do limit your ability to achieve different styles of playing, i.e. the one on the precision bang in the middle where the pickup is gives you very restricted space for slapping and the one on the bridge on jazz basses prevents you from playing staccato right close to the bridge and get that burpy Jaco tone. Each to his own of course but I like to be able to play my right hand in as many different places as I need it to get that particular effect.

Mark at Bass Direct had one in store 3 days ago when I went there. And get this it's second hand but untouched, mint conditions, they retail at £2099.99 and he is selling for £1600 I have had a good look at it and it was perfect.
Tee hee! But now I am puzzled: how did you get this: to work?
that's easy even for a plonker like me, ok.. follow me: the promethean head can be detached from the cab by undoing these 2 great big thumb screws, ok? So it removed it and sat it on top of the Mark Bass combo, I then unplugged the speaker lead from the back of the Mark Bass head and plugged it in the speaker output of the promethean, and hey presto.
