1. I have been very busy but I've finally finished this bass. The pickup is fitted, the wiring is done, as well as a new bone nut and the fitting of original Fender 70's reissue reverse tuners. Now entering my Hall of Fame basses, this plays and sounds better than I expected it to. Proper mustard this one, here are the final touch pictures.
2. Lovely bass to be honest, a close descendant of the Musician MC924 model although much cheaper at the time, to a collector it can be worth as much £400 £450 but unfortunately the market at large has not shown much interest and they could be seen going on ebay as cheap as £150 to £200
3. Phone Chandler Guitars, ask to speak to Andy, Tel. 0208 9405874 they have a super impressive CV (that's curriculum vitae, not classic vibe lol) having repaired Sting's basses, Jimmy Page guitars and lots more "stars". They are based in Kew, Richmond (West London) on 300-302 Sandycombe Road, London. TW9 3NG
4. This walnut one available here: http://www.greasygroove.com/proddetail.php...581-PG-W-P-C-JB
5.
For charging, I'd just used the USB lead. Like I said, it appeared to be working fine for a couple of days as well. I'm a little disappointed because this is the first time I've bought anything used off Ebay. I've messaged him, he seems helpful enough, and keen to keep his 100% positive feedback. Obviously the least hassle for me would be to get my £75 back and start again - so maybe I should go that route first before my window for making a request for a refund closes. Thanks for everyone's help.
Yes. Return it because you have the right to do so in case the item don't work. Good luck.
6.
I've now got a reply from Tascam, as follows: **************************************** Thank you for contacting Tascam U.K You either have a fault with the Internal SD card or a fault on the DP card. Please return the unit to our Service department for further investigation . Kind Regards Jo Fialho Service Manager TEAC U.K. LTD. Building 6,19-20 The Courtyards .Croxley Green Business Park Hatters Lane. Watford Herts WD18 8TE ************************** Anyone had any dealings with Tascam who can give me any idea of a) how long they'll take and how much they'll charge?
Not had any dealing with them, but I am sure that before they go ahead with any repair that they should give you an idea of the cost involved to repair it. Let us know how you get on, I have had mine for 2 years now and not had any problem even after I have installed their new firmware earlier last summer. Good luck
7. You haven't asked in the ernie's balls forum, have ya? They'll have you deported to Guantanamo Bay if you do. Be careful lol
8.
If (hypothetically, of course! ) You wanted the Black J body and the maple neck with pearloid block inlays from the PJ together, would that cost a lot more?
I don't think it'll cost more as the pearl block inlays upcharge is the same regardless, any official dealer can give you a quote
9. The same happened to me on my first CV 51's P lake placid blue, when the pickup just died, they replaced it under warranty. (it was Nevada Music)
10.
Drooooooooool! I'm a sucker for block inlays, but there's just something truly magical about block inlays on a fanned neck. Beautiful bass (and they do it in black!)... Someone stop me now!
Yes they do it in black a-la Geddy Lee in fact a friend of mine who is also a BC'er has a very specially beautiful one and we took a few shots with all of them together as you can see below:
11. Well done and about time too! I have got a sick fetish for CV Squiers lol I seem to have had the lot of them, currently I have the Fiesta Red and the Butterscotch Blond '51 style. Lovely basses.
12.
A beautiful collection, but any chance of posting a bigger version of your avatar GW? I'd like to see that!
Sure... here you go
13. Looks like he brought all his dinner up while he was playing and plastered the bass with puke.
14. errr... to secure cheap pickguards to cheap bodies, maybe? To the best of my knowledge, no original Fender Jazz body ever had that screw hole in that position. and its not those for the for the pickup covers, either because those were drilled by either side of the neck pickup.
15.
I think a Dingwall might be something next for me. Long way off though.
hehehe you........
16.
That's pretty sweet! Also me and my grabber are on the roto ad on the back of the issue of bass guitar mag behind your 51 P bass . Out of curiosity, in your opinion which of the dingwalls has the most charactor?
Well that is a very difficult question. The ABII in redwood is the one I would say that has a very suited voice in every style of music you apply it to, mostly due to the types of wood used, i.e. walnut back, maple cap and redwood top, with the neck being a walnut one with a wenge fretboard, it all accounts for a very tasty mix of musical timbers. In addition the ABII also has a a chambered body (that means there's holes in it under the top!) designed to enhance the acoustic, and you really can tell how good that sound when you play it side by side with the ABZ. The natural ash ABZ on the other hand, it's virtually all those things that the ABII is, minus the active preamp and yet as a passive instrument, is one of the most versatile I have ever played and the single responsible bass that made me perform a complete U-turn in life, going from an all Music Man stable to a totally Dingwall one. Yes that bass made me sell all my EBMM and realize what a great improvement both the fanned fret and that great neck, the light weight body meant to me, compared to MM's. Now these basses are a bit like Pringles, once you pop you can't stop! so after the ABZ, came the ABII and the Super J. (I am eyeing up a Lee Sklar sig. model, or a Z3 one next but I'll need to save untold cash for one of them) The Super J (P/J) its in an all different ball park, and quite the unsuspecting monster (Dr.Jekyll / Mr Hyde), the scale is 35" and not 37" like the ABII/ABZ and the spacing at the bridge is also slightly wider 19mm instead of the 18mm on the ABII/ABZ, so in that respect, it results into a slight different playing approach in respect to the other two, sonically it starts from being an intentionally polite Fender-esque rendition bass, with very accurate P and J bass sounds when played in passive, mind you but... here is the quirky thing: in active, the 2 band Glockenklang pre-amp transform this bass into a differently themed instrument, no longer a Fender tribute, but something entirely different. I have found that when in active if you play both pickups in parallel (not in series) you get a very powerful Bongo-like sound which to me was a nice surprise, I am sure Sheldon didn't mean that to be the result, but side by side with a Bongo you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference in sound. And then when you use the two pickups together in series, all hell break loose as it boasts the most power out of this bass, infact more than I really can afford on my amps. It makes both my amps clip into a bit of crunchy distortion and you need to back the bass eq quite a bit and the volume for that matter, some people might like that but I prefer clean lines, I don't really use a distortion pedal in the music I play. So yeah once in active it does bring out the animal in this bass which is probably why they've called it the Super J. Love it! I took all three of them to a basschatter I was visiting last weekend, "Juice" he was so impressed that his jaw needed locked back into place all the time I was there, he is now buying himself an ABZ after my visit. And that's about the size of it. Cheers
17.
Thats what I find strange, we all, including myself, state we love Ps, but then consider changing Pups to make it sound more P, doesn't compute really when you think about it ? Currently considering changing the ones in my 62 RI
That is because the modern pickups are not the same quality as the old vintage ones used to be, and that is why there is a market for Seymour Duncan, Lollar etc building pickups based on the exact same specs as the very first ones hand wired, & wax potted by Leo & co.
18. You know what Gareth, you're not wrong and I agree with you wholeheartedly ( however you spell that ) if you've found what's good for you in a Precision bass then there's no need to look for a better one, and the only other way is to make the one you have better by fitting a "boutique" pickup like a Fralin or Lollar, Wizard or anything that is better than stock, rather than to get a new bass, after all wood is wood and at the end of the day is the electronic that maketh the sound you get out of it, and a good amp of course. See that bass in my avatar, well that middle pickup on it's own nails the bl00dy P sound down to a tee another reason why I love that old bass, it just rawks!
19. I've bought mine for £450 and sold it for about the same price here to a bc'er. It's a fantastic sounding bass, lovely to play but... there are two things that you need to come to terms with, one is the fact that it weighs a near walloping 10lbs the other is the slab body sans contours which does dig into your arm, these two factors make it a painful bass to play on extended periods and I have tried to ignore it at first because of the sound factor, I thought would win in the end, but in my case what done it, was that almost any other bass I own is less than 8lbs and I naturally ended up using it less and less particularly because of the excellent Squier CV 50's that I had modded with original American parts and a Lollar pickup, at around 7.5lbs I said to myself is it worth it when the Squier plays and sounds just as good? So I sold it.
20. At the risk of being shouted at for showing this again, here is my ultimate P/J be gentle y'all!
21. At least they're not all wonkey, aye? New member now featured is the Squier Classic Vibe '51 Precision Bass
22. Still voting for the Red one, that thing's on fire! even if I prefer bookmatched stripey maple to quilt.
23. This is my holy trinity In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, AMEN!
