1. Also, I've forgot to mention, the Squier VM has an ebanol fretboard, which is not everyone's cup of tea (certainly not mine) becasue it is very very plasticky sounding as opposed to the mellow rosewood you get on the Vintage.
 2. Pound for Pound I would advise you against the Squier one and would get the Vintage "Jaco" lookalike one, I tried one and was very very impressed. here is a link: http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html
 3. My first bass will be the last... I once said to myself That was 32 years ago The bass in question was a 1979 original Fender Jazz Bass in natural ash colour, maple neck which I borrowed (read -> nicked) from one of my stoned cousin as his band flopped in change for a bag of wacky backy ) eventually he was drafted (compulsory militar service in Italy in those days, I did it too a few years later), but then (check this out...) I sold it back to him 2 years later because I didn't really like the colour and it was too heavy, yes it was a wopping 12 pounder. My next bass was a Gibson copy made by an unknown jap company called EB which for us in Italy was like the equivalent of Tokai in both quality and copycat accuracy. I can count that from then to present date I might have owned 40-45 basses more or less some lasting years and some as little as 3 months.
 4.
As far as Fenders go,it's entirely possible that some people just really like them and/or don't give a sh*t about 'boutique' instruments.
Doddy, I have a small favour to ask you, with this being a forum of discussions we share knowledge amongst ourselves, since you've mentioned boutique basses, I am unable to tell the difference or recognise the dividing line between an ordinary bass and a boutique one. Would you be able to list me say... 10 obvious boutique basses and explain or point me in the direction of what makes them boutique and separates them from the rest? Surely it's not just a matter of the price tag, right? Thanks
 5.
Those slab sided 51 reissues actually sound great. You should try one.
Yeah man, you tell them fools like it is!! Nothing wrong with Fender and no evil empire either, Leo, God bless his soul should rest in peace for ever, he sold his company and moved on to other ground breaking projects. Give him respect.
 6. I've just bought this album as an MP3 download, since it was finally released early this morning on amazon.co.uk because I was too impatient to wait for the actual CD to arrive in the post. (It should be here this week) What a great CD, every track is a refreshing revelation. To say that Michael Manring is one of my favourite solo artists it’s an understatement. Of course I am now a great fan of your playing style too, ever since I have got "Something Different" which is an album I constantly listen back to back in my car, on the iPhone and sometimes at work. Rebirth has really shown what your next obvious stage in your music was going to be. The result is far from a disappointing, to the point where I still can't decide if I actually prefer this or the other as they are both very good, I really recommend this album to all bass players. There are a plethora of great musicians in this CD each bringing their trademark contribution to a very colourful and captivating masterpiece, showcasing different styles and sounds remeniscent of music from artist of great caliber and popularity. Music is definitely not dead, and albums like these are the very proof of it. Well done Alberto great album.
 7.
...Sound... I was expecting some disappointing sounds because of GW's comments
Take no notice of what I write, I talk totally out of my (b)ass. Considering 90% of my basses are wonky fretted, you should never trust me, I don't know my (B)ass from my elbow. in fact I know nothing.
 8.
I'll complain to you if I am not satisfied. It's all your fault! So I got a txt a little while ago. "Your parcel is out for delivery and due to be delivered between 14:33 and 15:33" I must say I am impressed with this courier, DPD. I never had any company giving me this kind of delivery time estimates. Thumbs up if they deliver. The question now is... do I escape temporarily from work to be at home -20min away- when the van arrives, or do I just leave it and maybe collect tomorrow from the depot? what will I do, what will I do? have a guess
They are that good, those couiers they text you and Guitar Guitar will email you before and after delivery.
 9. Well this box arrived today at work, not bad, it took 2 weeks from order to delivery! This will be fitted this Sat when I have time.
 10.
Well, I gave it nearly 24h. So I went and... it's been ordered! (Guitar Guitar) There was 1 in stock, which made me a little suspicious... it wouldn't be the first time I order something in a shop that turns out not to be in stock. But after I got the email confirmation I went to search again for the bass and... sure enough the status had changed to "coming soon, 5 available in pre-order". So it looks I should get the bass on Tuesday This forum is really bad for my bank balance!!!
Well done, you won't regret it!
 11. Coated strings... tried them, didn't like how they feel under the fingertips. Kinda raspy, sort of sticky. Not my cuppa. bleuuurrrgghhhh!
 12.
Are you getting the one thats split ??
Yes Johnston, that's the one I am getting as in this link: http://angela.com/lindyfralinsplitcoilpick...cisionbass.aspx ------------------------ mcnach Posted Today, 05:45 PM What does it look like under that pickguard? Very tidy if you leave the control plate in place (the one with volume and tone) you can go without pickuguard without unsighlty exposed cavities.
 13.
Just curious how much it might cost to refinish a bass body in another colour? roughly? does it depend on the finish etc.. would be a flat colour i wanted.. any ideas
You are looking at £350 for solid colours and anything up to £400 for sunburst or metallic which require mutliple layers and multiple oven dry stages. (these quotes are from your average spray shop / repair workshop) and these quotes are for professional work, as anyone else said you can bodge it with a few cans of Halford's best but unless you can sand, prime, seal and spray evenly with skill, it's going to look like a chav's car painted with spray cans.
 14. Get an Hercules stand, hang it by the neck that should do it no probs. http://www.herculesstands.com/guitars/GS412B.html
 15.
Finally got my hands on a 50's CV and in the butterscotch . I'm sold, Trying to convince the Mrs Fathers day is coming up Didn't plug it in, well mainly because from what I've read about the pups there's no point plus they have no amps anywhere like mine. so I can never see the point of putting a bass through a 12" combo when I have an old 15" . Needed a set up too and I wasn't keen on the strings BUT the neck felt real comfy. Not too far away from my other P but different in the right places. And for anyone comparing prices it was £329.
Yes £329 here too from GuitarGuitar. Mine is 90% completed, I am just waiting on the the Lindy Fralin pickup from US. Mods done so far are: 1) Fender 70's reissue reverse machine heads and ferrules. 2) Original bone nut 3) Volume and tone pots replaced with CTS ones, 4) All wiring loom changed with waxed cloth ones 5) Input jack replaced with a Switchkraft 6) Capacitor replaced with a paper oil capacitor for that smooth tone control sweep 7) And finally the pickup and control cavities have been first sprayed with graphite insulating paint, and then screened with copper tape. Now hurry up USPS mail with this darned pickup!
 16. Lady in red..... does it for me.
 17.
Without the shadow of a doubt, for regular (parallel that is) fretted basses I prefer Ernie Ball Super Slinky
+1000000 What he said! ..... wait..... that was me! Talk about thread resurrection! lol
 18. I was in Richmond today, visiting my son, as part of my "rounds" whenever I am in Richmond I always stop to have a gander at Chandler Guitars on Sandycombe Road. Well I was amazed that regardless of the fact that they are meant to be Guitar shop, they had so many basses in there and in particular a lot of Rickies, from used to brand new and to fit all pockets. So if any of you is after a real Ricky and you are in London go check them out, they also had 2 very interesting basses, a pre lawsuit Tokay SG in pristine condition and a Gibson EB-1 that played like a dream!! Also they had some new and used Fender, including a nice USA 1975 Precision. Definately worth putting it on your schedule to pay them a visit.
 19.
MY OCD IS BEGGING YOU TO CORRECT THE TITLE 'WANDERING' ? 'WONDERING'
Yeah just realised and corrected, forgive me, my original mother language was not English but Italian so every now and then I do make the odd spelling error.
 20.
I think they recommend that the gain should be set just below the clip light coming on and the master adjusted accordingly.
This!
 21.
That... That is Amazing! I am a huge Twinspirits fan! Make him join the forum!
He already has! but for the life of me I can't remember if he has used his real name or an alias here, however he is active on both talkbass and the dingwall forum as himself http://www.dingwallguitars.com/community/v...?f=2&t=1934 you can click here to "like" him on facebook so you can be up to speed with all his latest releases and info http://www.facebook.com/AlbertoTHEBASSRigoni?ref=ts
 22. whatever it is, it's a looker, congrats.
 23.
I'd love to hear your ABZ! I've been aching to play a 5 or 6 string Dingwall (a bit far from Bassdirect me! ) after one of my favourite artists started playing an ABZ 5 and his custom Prima Artist 6! (Alberto Rigoni of Twinspirits if you were wondering!)
Alberto and I are very good friends, (we are both Italians), he is coming to visit London soon and will be staying with us as guest, I have promised to take him to Bass Direct to have a blast.
 24.
Wow Wazoo... Where did all those Dingwalls come from? And more importantly, where did all the MusicMen go?! Rich
Well in a nutshell, I went to the Bass Gallery in Camdem to buy me a Mark Bass Compressore pedal... and there were two Ding's on the wall the Natural Ash ABZ 5 and a Lyme Green Combustion, I tried them both and took home the ABZ ash one, just couldn't keep my hands off that bass. Later that day I went back home and compared the new purchase with my 4 EBMM's (Bongo 5, Big Al 5, 25th 5 and Stingray 5) and decided to abandon the EB ship and jump on the Ding's one. And that's what happened but RICH what happened to you all these months have you been on tour ?? Not heard a word from you for ages
 25.
What is the waiting time roughly on a Dingwall PJ?
Not greater than EBMM on the "normal" models, its the Prima Artists that take a lot longer, however the only one which I have ordered which was built from scratch was the Super P/J ordered on 08/10/2010 was completed on 11/02/2011 and arrived here on the 16/02/2011 so all in all 4 months. But Bass Direct at the moment has got tons of them in stock to suit most tastes, although not yours cause you are ever so picky! LOL
