Never played on either a Dingwall or a fanned fret bass (Are they mutually exclusive?) Have to rectify this at the next Bass Day.
Well only 127 miles separates you in Chester from the one place in UK that has the most Dingwall's in stock to try http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&sour...amp;t=h&z=9 http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...Combustion.html -

Can you change the sound of an instrument?
Grand Wazoo replied to ironside1966's topic in Bass Guitars
Often a dull sound when unplugged is due to a poor quality nut. I would change the nut from the cheap plastic to bone or reconstituted bone, a decently cut one will give you better resonance. And as Rasta rightly said +100000000 on the Fralin pickup. -
'Welcome to overreaction central!'
Yes you would think so, however, well lets face it, the things that people gets away with, in an internet forum are beyond belief and I am talking about out and out lack of respect for those they are not familiar with. If for one moment we forget that we are chatting via the internet, and instead imagine this exact situation recreated in real life, like if we were all invited to this "big" party, don't you think that a total stranger would think twice before asking someone if they have ocd at the risk of offending the bloke and be rewarded back with a bunch of 5's, or worse? Of course we all react differently, but maybe 5 out of 10 people would take offense to it as I would, cause I am not one known to show the other cheek. -
Have you got ocd?
That's not nice gub, whoever you are, let me teach you a lesson of life, and that is that you don't overstep the mark, with that sort of jokes with people you don't know, those kind of jokes "might" be acceptable between known friends, but definatey not between strangers. So no, I haven't got ocd and your humour is not appreciated and well out of order. -
How many Dingwalls now?! Woah, nice collection. The PJ gets my vote....beautiful.
It's still only 3, the natural Ash ABZ 5, the ABII in redwood and the P/J Super J. The black Jazz J/J belongs to a friend of mine who is also a member of this forum but I don't know his username here, he is jonnyrok101 in the Dingwall forum, funny enough we found out we only live 2 miles away from each other in Greenwich,SE London so we got together for a nice Dingwall Matinee' with coffees, basses and amps, loads of fun! -
My 'very buzzy' new 2EQ has been exchanged, very thankfully, for a new 3EQ in Vintage Sunburst/Maple/Black. I would normally agree about the 'bland' maple nowadays, but WOW, this maple neck/board is beautiful for a new standard Ray! It has birdseye figuring around certain areas, and a nice subtle bit of flame figuring on the headstock. The board itself is perfect.... The bass is also very very well made, im back to being very confident about EBMMs Pics when I get chance!
Wow Gareth, does this mean you've now turned to the.... "bright" side? as in maple fretboard side?
I thought you were busy filling out insurance claim forms http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=grand+wazoo
I missed that one lol, but I was aware of that video, what happened there was, a process called jumbosizing, they take the ship to drydock and cut her in half, then fit a new mid section for the purpose of increasing the overall lentgh and basically increasing their cargo holds capacity, this lot mucked it up big time though, because when they had the new sections side by side and attempted to drag the fwd part in place it all went tits up. -
I did wonder!!! How's the latest Squier coming on?
in bits at the moment, waiting for the split Lindy Fralin to arrive from the US, everything else is fitted already (pots / wiring / bone nut / pegs / copper screaning) -
The headstock look s a bit Peavey-ish, doesn't it? It's not as bad as I'd have thought it would be, I think I could live with that.
Forgive me for coming back to this point and apologies to the OP for wandering off topic , but I was under the impression that CV's have Seymour Duncan's of some description in them at birth. Is this not the case ? or are they SD's under license ? inferior ? etc ? Just asking....
No not the Classic Vibe, but some of the Indonesian made one have a licensed by Seymour Duncan pickup with the logo "Designed By Seymour Duncan" not made by, mind you... a bit like Squier and Fender all over again, made in some sweathshop in the far east under the licensing of SD.
Re the Squier CVs, if they sound acoustically as good as my Aerodyne they must be some utter pish pickups to make them sound that average plugged in.
That's what I have been saying for the last 2 years, no one seems to believe me. I've had ALL the 3 classic vibe models, and for that matter 2 of the 50's tele type. The pickups and components are utter sh|te! These basses have great potential, but only when you lift the pickguard and junk everything under it, as soon as you replace wiring, pots and pickup with the real deal, i.e. CTS pots, proper wires, input jack et all. Stick a Lollar or a Seymour Duncan Vintage in there, the money you would have spent will result in a real investment, one you won't regret.
It is pretty soft and dings pretty easy, at least the stuff on cheap guitars does.
Well that would apply if the body was kept unpainted, a strong paint and lacquer job would determine how easy the body would ding or not. The bongo I had was pretty tough, I had it a year from new and never got a single ding on it before I sold it. Same goes for my Classic Vibe Squiers. No dings.
nothing much in it then?
What do you mean? weight wise or sound? It sounded great actually, once I swapped the original pickups with vintage stacked Seymour Duncans, the bass sounded better than the real thing.
The Squier Classic Vibe Jazz is basswood. Mine was just over 9lbs. Tone was fine, especially with pickups upgraded to Wizards.
Ditto! Mine (the Squier CV moo-moo ) when played unplugged the most resonant of all 3 of them (I owned all 3 Classic Vibe ones), it would just ring and ring with sustain and like ET's mine weighed 9.12lbs
I'll be honest, it seems to be the going rate. I've sold them in shops from £499 to £650 ish new across the second run of reissues. I just remember drooling over the sunburst one in Sound Control in Salford in about 1998, yet out of all the 100's of fenders i've swapped/sold/bought etc, never owned one, always seem to end up on something else. Seems mad as I would have got a deal from Fender, d'oh! My mate has the same bass in butterscotch - But his constant use of ultra heavy strings has goosed the neck, so i'll never end up with his. Just need to tidy a few things up, and it'll be either Custom shop '55 or Jap '51 in Sunburst, then onto my Wal quest...i'll die happy.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-51-reissue-pr...=item3cb7ab666a

Its made in Japan, 94/95 year in sunburst with a maple board? Any ideas are most welcome, many thanks!
£450-£500 max depending on conditions, and if has the original 2 saddles bridge, and no mods being carried out.
That's interesting GW. Can go into more detail of your experience of this please.
I sense a slight controversy, almost as you seek to challenge me. I won't get into it for the sake of "I know better, you know better" so what I'll do I'll give you some links that can give you a lot of different prospectives as to why trees which were born centuries ago, had different consistency where it has been noted by scientists using CT scans that 200 years ago or older trees grew slower and their growth rings were tighter & smaller hence producing better harmonic resonance.
