  1. These are amazing to play - one of the nicest 5 string necks out there IMHO. They found modern but the scale length makes a massive difference to the clarity of the overall sound of all strings not just the B. I was lucky enough to play one of the new Combustion III which is basically this bass but without the fancy dan EQ Killer bass! Good luck fella!
  2. I currently have jut the one bass - in the past I've had two knocking about but since getting into 5 string my second 'back up' 4 string just wasn't getting used. I now only have one bass, a 5er, and it is the one for now and as far a I know the near and distant future. It's lightweight, sounds and plays fantastic. I have two rigs. One lightweight head and a power amp/pre amp set up with a 212 cab. They cover all my needs and I think my stable is complete....... well I'd find it hard to justify any more kit
  3. The D-Bird looks good! Shuts the fan fret look better than the Super J I think.
  4. Opticaleye I was led to believe that the first run had the B&O analogue power modules - since production went to Asia there were some changes (not better or worse just different) which could be reflected in the 801. I've no point of reference only in the gear I have and to me the big rig wins ...not that the punters notice the difference
  5. Yup the neck on the combustion III I played was a thing of beauty- if I ever spec'd a custom bass it'd have the neck dimensions of a combi either regular or fanned.
  6. mixed set?
  7. The dark glass head looks nice and I'm sure will do a great job for a lot of players. I recently went back to using a preamp/power amp set up and noticed a difference at volume over my TTE 500. It might have been the added flexibility of the parametric pre amp EQ over the usable but limited eq on the TTE which was making me hear something different. The pre/power set up is heavier and with out having looked inside I'm confident it's the transformers which can only be a good thing. The TTE isn't a bad amp and it works well, has the B&O power module but to me I can notice a bit more oomph with the power amp/preamp set up. I'm happy to gig either but I'm favouring the 'heavy rig' and this comes after A/B'ing the power/pre and the pre into the TTE at gigging volume. Anyhow back to the dark glass. Be good to hear one in anger but I'm not gassing for one.
  8. I used to be terrible for that - seeing a bass, flipping what I had to get it then the buyers remorse only to do the same 6 months later or so. Having got a nice P style 5'er a while back in trade for my 'back up' 4 string and subsequently selling my main gigging 5er I have been GAS free since then. I realise that I was lucky to get my P5 and it's a fantastic bass which I'd struggle to better. My bass and gigging rig are pretty much perfect for my needs and I know that I'd be mad to shift them but more importantly I've no desire to add to or replace anything just now. This feeling is reinforced every time I go to rehearsal or a gig. I guess it's a consequence of sites like bass chat or you tube where we suddenly have access to opinion and exposure to so much more gear but while my days of GAS seem to be behind me I still enjoy a good snuffle through the for sale sections and the latest reviews and demo's online.
  9. Hey does the JC Aguilar cab put out giggle volumes? Always been keen to know what they sounded like in a real gig context. Cheers
  10. Bought a flight case - swift efficient deal. I'd happily deal with Martin again!
  11. Markbass TTE 500? There's one for sale on BC just now for a great price. It's possibly got a larger form factor than the other amps listed but is by no means heavy. Worth a look!
  12. Markbass tte500 is another which can be used without a cab connected.
  13. I'm off to the USA in Nov and am already saving for the potential gear purchases. If the pound is strong I can see one of these working its way back home with me!
  14. yup i run via a pre into my wee mixer from di
  15. I got a new bass a few months ago and it's still a joy to gig with it - hell its a joy to just sit and play it! More recently got a new rig and tried the preamp at home on the Saturday via my wee headphone mixer then into a tiny practice amp. Sounded good but needed to give it some beans in the practice room - had it at the rehearsal room the next day going into the line in of the Ashdown they have, bypassing the ashdown eq, into a muddy sounding ashdown 2x15 .... Feeling a bit like Goldielocks as this too sounded good but again not quite my rig........then finally later that same night I got to plug into my own cab and power amp at a gig..... The sound was great and I was a a bit giddy to finally gig it with all my proper live gear! The bass was playing real nice and the rig was just full and plump with great punch too. Got it to sit nice and tight with the Kick drum and while I doubt the crowd realised why they were dancing we all knew ......right guys 😉
  16. Much like ratman suggests I've discovered this wee gem from the same family of mixers. It's got a couple of extra features/inputs but I only paid £30 it gives me a dedicated phono line out which I connect to the cans via red/white phono cable which gives a stereo mix of iPod and bass for jamming along silently - something I wasn't getting (kinda obviously) coming out the actual headphone out with my 1/4" guitar cable and reduced/adapter. Should have done this years ago and not bothered with a practice amp at home! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-502-Xenyx-mixer/dp/B000J5UEGQ
  17. I bought a small mixer for about 30 quid and use that with headphones - I can run my laptop/ipod into it and jam along Very handy and not expensive! http://www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Lighting/Behringer-Xenyx-502-Mixer/6PE
  18. Dibs!! I'll pm you at a reasonable hour later today 😀
  19. Hey guys My buddy is thinking of getting a Golden Age 1073 pre amp and eq for home recording. He was asking me if it could be used live with a power amp for his bass gigs and he was also thinking about it for his acoustic shows too. My thought is that it would work in both settings for either application i.e. the pre amp would give the relevant volume/gain adjustment and the EQ can be applied to suit guitar or bass. He was thinking of putting them into a 1U case so it would be easily transported and more importantly safe! Is anyone doing this with their studio kit? Part of me thinks the studio gear should stay at home but I'm intrigued by the idea!
  20. Yeah if it sounds like the Big Al that's no bad thing. They're just a bit ordinary but they could play great. Price will be interesting......
  21. Aren't Ibanez pushing the Promethean again this NAMM?
  22. Hi Richard I bought one of these RW Jazz bases off you a while back (sadly it was nicked) and it was an amazing bass. If I wasn't so into 5'er I'd snap this up. Very tasteful mods on this too.
  23. Karlfer Remember posts on ad's don't notify the op. Unless he checks in he won't see the super friendly bump. Your a good bc'er sir!
  24. As may have been said. Get onto our American friend on talkbass. Try and get chatting with the guys from the gospel scene in the area you're travelling to. See what's available locally from TB and have some viewings lined up or maybe even some loaners? I'm sure the gospel community I'm sure will step up and help. Good luck!!
