1.
Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the line6 believe me
I don't have one but I heard the bassist for a friend of mine gig the small 10" combo at the Notting Hill Arts Club a few years ago and thought it sounded fantastic!
2. I love how Will Ferrell dropped the tune into Semi Pro. As for the effect, sounds just like a Mutron to me.
3.
Nooooo....man...vibrato....vibrato's where it's at. I fear I may be at the overkill stage with it though :-)
Never! I use vibrato/bends/slides on almost every note. It just adds a little spice to it. Quarter-tone bends are what it's all about!
4.
Help! All my basslines are starting to sound too similar! How can I break out of the arpeggiated fill style and become more creative?
Instead of the arpeggiated way, you can start dropping some bluesy fills.
5. I use the 'thumps' for effect from time to time.
6.
I thought music was forbidden during ramadan? Best not take an amp!
I turned up to Jeddah airport during Ramadan with an acoustic guitar in my hand when I was about 14. Everyone found it very amusing.
7. I love bass synth sounds. My keyboard player plays synth on a Nord Lead 2X, while I sometimes use my Akai Deep Impact. The pedal's wicked but isn't the same. If I could find a keytar that didn't look so daft, I'd nab one and hook it up to a Nord rack module.
8. Joe, the 400PS only needs one cab attached at a time. It sends out 145W per output (I think at either 4 or 8 ohms - but I'd need to check). It doesn't have separate speaker outs for the guitar and bass channels. That would be bloody brilliant. I'm not sure how customisable it is under the hood. If there was a way to re-route some of the innards to get full power to one or all of the speaker outs or to separate speaker outs into guitar and bass cabs, that'd be fantastic but I'm not sure how feasible that is. In terms of cash, maybe I should PM you... (The two Marshalls offer sounds amazing as well, I have to say!)
9. Bloody lovely looking bass! Fender 400PS + cash?
10. Thanks for the explanation, Lefty! Does your knowledge reach further back than the Church's interventions? This whole topic sounds fascinating!
11. I remember one lesson when I studied Ancient Greek in which a discussion began about an odd translation along the lines of "the exotic-sounding Ionian scale". Our extremely knowledgeable teacher assured us that while the names of the modes are derived from Ancient Greece, the actual scales to which they refer are not necessarily the same. But then the Ancient Greeks thought the Persians were effeminate for wearing trousers - so maybe the Ionian mode did sound exotic to them!
12. If you're after a fairly cheap rig, I'd go for a Gallien-Krueger head and Hartke cabs. I know the Hartkes are made in China and some people find their speakers disgusting but I think the fact that they're so out of fashion means they're actually pretty well priced new and a bit of a bargain secondhand. Personally, I loved the sound of Hartke XL cabs - just couldn't get enough lows out of them for my needs. A couple of years ago I sold a GK 400RB head for around £200 and a pair of Hartke XL cabs for another £200. Have a look around the For Sale forums, ebay and gumtree.
13. The designer of these amps (I think his name is Jess Oliver) has a shop on ebay where he restores and sells these from time to time. I would love to try/hear/get one. I've also asked Denis Cornell about building a clone, which he said would be quite possible but probably very expensive. Are you the bassist from Funkestra? A keyboard player I used to play with is a massive fan.
14. His bro Felix plays bass too. By all accounts, two killer players.
15. I wonder if this is for a friend of mine who's a young male 17-24 singer-songwriter recently signed to Universal. If so why didn't he just bloody call me, the bastard? Is he trying to tell me I'm fat?! Personally, I've got no problem with the ad, whether or not it might be slightly illegal. If you're 35 but look 22, then apply. If you want gigs where it's more about being heard than being seen, clearly this isn't for you. If these types of adverts said 'white' or 'black', I'd lose out either way. Thankfully the music business doesn't seem all that racist. I'm surprised there were so few responses to this ad. Seems like a missed opportunity for some good looking youngster.
16. Some people can come up with something to put together with any idea you might have - others need you to write a part for them. That doesn't have much to do with level or talent but more to do with musical chemistry. If your guitar needs you to write the guitar parts for him, then write them for him, even if it's as basic as telling him which chords to play. If you can come up with a nice little line for him to play as well, that's great.
17.
I think you can see him at the start when Marcus and the band meet.
Yeah, and it's him on kit.
18.
Really?? Manu is one of my fave drummers and the first musician I knew by name.
Yep. Someone else posted a clip from his show a while ago with some other killer musicians. I then went to the site and went through as many different clips as I could find.
19. Just to add that Line 6 are the kings of amp modelling so I'd be very surprised if there isn't a speaker emulation on its Line Out.
20. I normally take the opportunity to have a little break and leave it to the others, like Chris.
21. This is that French programme hosted by Manu Katché where he gets different famous musicians together and gets then to jam through things - everything that Later with Jools Holland should be but isn't.
22.
Told the guy that I had an Ashdown and he instantly replied Crashdown as they keep breaking down apparently.
Smart alec guitar shop employees. I can't stand them. I'm not a fan of Ashdown but if you like the sound, why change?
23.
Never try and record an overdriven or distorted guitar from a DI. It just about never sounds as good.

As has been said before, the Line Out (or DI out) from a guitar amp seldom sounds good for distorted sounds. A lot of the warm tone you hear in a distorted guitar comes from the speaker and the Line Out bypasses the speaker so you end up with something completely different.
Agree 100%. The problem is that almost all of a guitar's sound comes from the inherent deficiencies of the speaker, which ironically sound so damn good. Unless you're using a Line / DI Out with some kind of inbuilt speaker/cab modelling, it'll sound awful. If you don't have a mic or decent amp, you could also try taking a DI out of the multi-effects unit, if it has some kind of amp/cab modelling.
