1. Hehe, well done. Looking forward to checking it out! IMDB Link?
  2. There are a few others above who've said focus on the snare/hi-hat. I prefer that approach to trying to lock with the kick drum. When you really click with a drummer you can both sit back and listen to the vocalist instead.
  3. I find it interesting that in the first few minutes of the video VW is asking his entourage what's going on - and most of them admit they don't know but also claim it's a shakedown and that they're "getting jacked". Time to get someone on the bus who knows something about anything.
  4. Is it also the third inversion of D7sus4? Or just Dsus4/C? Naming chords is such a weird thing sometimes.
  5.
I don't think you'll ever stop kids from trying stuff out when they've got no money to spend. You can only hope that they carry on being musicians when they finally get money to fund their hobby/profession.
You can't deny the "It will be mine. Oh yes... it will be mine." factor.
  6.
I will help any customer out and give them good advice, but when you have someone who just wants to kill half an hour trying out an all-black bass, slapping the hell out of and scratching it to f##k, you have to draw the line.
I was doing a case in Scunthorpe a few weeks ago (purely to see what the place is actually like) and I found an old-fashioned music shop next to the court. I came clean at the beginning and said I had half an hour to kill before I was due in court, explained that I'd like to buy two or three smaller items, and basically asked if I could noodle on one of their guitars as well for a while - that I probably wouldn't realistically be buying. They were totally cool with that, very nice, very friendly, very professional and very accommodating. Even if you're just killing time, there's no reason why you shouldn't be upfront about it.
  7. You can pull chicks from playing bass?
  8.
(I'm in Streatham, SW London)
Which bit? Grew up on Leigham Court Road!
  9.
Slapping to show what a fab bass player you are is pointless and will gain you no love whatsoever.
It'll get you some - but they'll be outnumbered by the "haters".
  10. I have one as well. Great little amp with a fair amount of juice with 290W in the UK!
  11. No point getting wound up about an article in The NME. The writers don't know anything about anything except that they're supposed to wear skinny jeans, baggy beanies, rate The Smiths and The Stone Roses, and slate anything else vaguely resembling music.
  12.
what does MD stand for ?

Musical Director, I assume.
That's the one. I didn't mean Doogie Howser.
  13. I've been thinking about bassist-bandleaders and wondered how many others there were out there. I know a fair few of you lead your own bands and some of you MD as well. I'd love to get an idea of what kind of proportion of us do. Do you find it goes against the bass-player stereotype a bit? Or does it make perfect sense as we're the rhythmic-harmonic link? Share your thoughts!

    RIP R,5,R,5...

I'm a bit shocked by all this. I always thought he had one of the best forum names!
  15.
I wonder if we could have forced a coup d'funk if I'd auditioned too?

Mate I might have to steal that for a band name

Just start your own band.............and choose your own musicians
Absolutely. I had a listen to their myspace - and they were fine - but very, very standard. You could put something together much better than that. Their drummer sounded great on record as did the brass. The rest of it was a bit average/dull. If the drummer can't keep time, then you don't need it at all. Put your own band together. It's time!
  16.
Is that simple? I know it's not complex, but I wouldn't say it's simple...!
Agreed.
  17. Bugger. Would have gone to this. Met him at a gig of his once when I was about 16. Nice chap who was happy to talk to a dumb kid about music just after coming off stage.
  18. I enjoyed that. Very inventive tune!
  19. Yep. I'll take the head if Moonie takes the cab. EDIT: Hmm... considering and reconsidering now. Give me a sec to check the specs and the bank balance. Might be interested in the whole lot...
  20.
I was thinking the other day (not something I do very often) we all try to get great tone from great basses and great amplification and try to use the best pedals that have true bypass and use certain speaker configurations to get just the sound we want. Then when we have it, it goes through a lead into pa that can be of totally different speaker sizes and through effects that are not true bypass into maybe a one by 12 and a 1 by 15 and a horn when the sound we may like is coming from a 4 by 10 and it never sounds the same out front of the pa as it does coming out of the amp My point is whats the point Do you think I should just give up thinking?
Never give up thinking! Live sound is always a compromise. My cabs have a pretty flat response so most of my sound comes from the fingers/bass/preamp, and so in theory it'll sound very similar coming out of the PA.
  21. At my old school we had a double bass teacher come in for half a day a week to cover our lessons. Decent player too - Pete 'Kubryk' Townsend. I think the classical double bass players might have had a different teacher.
