1.
Sometimes I think that some originals bands have an over-developed sense of entitlement.
I'd just refer the entire thread back to this. Over and over again. It, perhaps, is self-perpetuating - but it allows people to play gigs. We're not all career musos, some of us just play for fun and don't count the change; it's horses for courses. If it doesn't work for you, don't do it; if it does, fill your boots.
 2.
BTW what has Krist Novoselic done since Nirvana?
He became a politician and campaigned against guns, or somesuch?
 3. Ha, that does sound good. Very lovely basses, these Gibsons - still very much enamoured with my Grabber, but it sounds a lot more 'clanky' than the RD.
 4. Yours have the Moog circuit, Neep?
 5. Very nice, mate, very nice.
 6. Ah, I see what you mean... £800 is a lot better than the original pricing point!
 7. Would love one, but that price tag... Ouch.
 8.
You can bag a Sterling for the same kind of money as Rays generally, Used to be a bit cheaper but the Rays have dropped £50-100 IME making either of them available from about £650 upwards, £800 should bag something nice no problem New prices in the shops are just a mystery, I paid £1645 for my SR5 in Dec 2010 with a tag of £1849, others have said you should be aiming for £1349 new!
Now that's more like it!
 9. I'd have to check with Molan as to which brand of the Lakland pick-ups are in mine - no doubt I'd be committing some kind of almight sacrilege in changing them, but they're not quite what I want. What I wanted from the Jazz was a bit of the classic burp at the neck, with lots of punchy definition at the bridge. Which it does. But the MM does the bulk of it and twice as loud, and with the kind of grit which has you checking your fillings are all still in place. I'd still want the Jazz to have a role. It's a great player; it's got sentimental value; but it would need to compete. Sorry for the derailment. Always wanted to ask, and figured I should just blurt it out now!
 10. Musicman Sterling... not the Sterling by Musicman type, coming in around £2000+? This sound about right? Bollocks, might be a bit dear for avoiding cramp whilst gigging. Unless anyone wants a kidney?
 11. Slapping and funk is the furthest thing from my mind, sadly. I need something which growls and loves a pick. I need some sort of Mad Max-esque version - or go back to the idea of using the pedal to dress the signal, prior to hitting the rest of the effects chain. If that makes sense.
 12.
Okay, this is a dumb question, but can you just add one of these to your passive Jazz? Do you just replace the existing stuff with one of those ...... or do you have to change the pickups too?
I've got an equally silly question... so, I now use my Musicmans/Musicmen for live work; but my Jazz is still a delight to play... but is now very much lacking the punch. I was considering putting something like a Sansamp Bass Driver into my effects chain to "beef up" the Jazz - so I can still enjoy playing it, but get a little more oomph from it. I hadn't considered fitting a pre-amp. Something I should look at, perhaps? This sounds a little refined, considering I'm a dirty rock player - would people have suggestions for where to look for more information? It's a Lakland DJ4, for information.
 13. Stage left, trying to keep my head down and hide from the crowd like all good bassists. If you're wondering where the drummer is, he's right up my arse, hence why I'm turned into the stage - he's behind me; and my rig is behind him! He kept time from me and I kept time from him, and thus disaster was averted for another day
 14.
The biggest problem we found was that, even if you bring loads of people and 'sell' loads of tickets, the promoters were unable to count accurately.
Haha, I think I know of what you speak. We have had this; however, by way of restoring the karmic balance, we went to go drink elsewhere and took our crowd with us, which prompted a more reasonable discussion
 15. Wow, chap hop has finally surfaced on Basschat - this can only be a good day. What was the other one, fighting trousers? Anyways... So, I have better gear; I know how it all works; I understand how my bass is put together; I understand how to best set it up and what to do it anything goes wrong; and I have good technique. Look around your rehearsal room, from that position, and then see the difference Basschat has made - your guitarist may laugh as he tries tells you his Epiphone is a Gibson; or your drummer puts more tape on his skins, but the joke's on them.
 16.
On the whole no. The majority of "pay to play" gigs are a random selection of unknown bands thrown together in a venue for one night. It's a simple way for the promoter/venue to make sure they don't loose money putting on a gig with for them the minimum amount of effort. The bands themselves rarely get anything out of it either financially or in terms of building their audience. There are circumstances where I would consider it. Supporting someone well known whose audience would potentially like our band and provided that our slot was on the same stage and immediately before the headliners. And I'd want it all in writing up front. That way it could be looked as an investment in building audience numbers for future gigs and a bigger market for selling our merchandise to. However on the whole there is no need. If you're a new band and you need to find your gigging feet then you should be able to find a coupe of free slots to get you started. After that provided that your band is actually entertaining, you should have no trouble getting gigs that at the very least cover your expenses. And I'm talking originals bands here (covers bands should never be playing for free). Dick Venom & The Terrortones did a handful of free gigs when we were just starting but since then we have been able to command our expenses at the very least. These days we make enough money out of playing gigs to cover all our travelling and other gig related costs and still have enough left over to pay for our rehearsal time. See it can be done.
All good stuff, here. For the promoter it's a de-risking strategy - with them selling the tickets upfront they're guaranteed a certain level of income, regardless; and, let's face it. I'm sure there are countless examples of bands not bringing a crowd to have given them the idea. I've gone near the concept before, in terms of agreeing with a venue how many we'll look to sell - but have never bought them outright, prior. I'd certainly draw the line there. But, as X notes, it can work for some people, where it's the right gig - but, generally, I wouldn't endorse it.
 17. How are you getting on with the Hartke? I sometimes feel my HA4000 is a little too modern for my Grabber; I suspect the classic tone is all valve, but - blimey - the cost!
 18.
4) Big Al - pointy shaped body (but great fit to play especially sat down), mahogany body (the very early ones were alder) - 4 band EQ (in multi pick up version - 3 band in single H version) with coil selectors, series/parallel, active/passive - multi pick up available in SSS; HH variants - all colours etc as above.
The Big Al has the same sound? I thought, given the arrangement, it would be a very different animal - and thus hadn't even considered it, let alone began to wonder what the neck might be like. Sounds like the SLO or Sterling are the ones to aim for. No coin at the moment, might have to let the '76 Grabber go for a wander to raise some funds and then bide my time.
 19.
How do you guys deal with having more than one bass? I can't imagine how the guys with 3, 4, 5+ basses cope...
They're just possessions, chief. Swap out out basses for socks to highlight that point; although I should admit that they are a possession we are very privileged to have access to, a la first world problems and all that.
 20. That's some bad attitude. Ya see, what I did there?
 21.
Or, if you fancy having two...
Crikey, Gareth - I know I put a shift in, but how much money do you think I have?
 22.
Have you been checked out for RA? If not, get it done.
Crikey, I hope not - but, am backing seeing my GP about the Carpal Tunnel, so I'll be querying again if there's anything else I should be doing.
Yes, the Sterling by MM Ray34 has the same 3EQ as a Stingray.
Ta!
 23. And, to ask for the moon on a stick, would any of these have the same 3EQ option? Gareth will be laughing at me now, given my abundant praise for the Stingray... am just thinking of if my hands get any worse
