1. Drummer mate of mine has been trying to find some drumless backing tracks to practice against for the covers band he's in. Not sure what the songs are, contemporary standard stuff I suppose. Preferably free, obviously, he's young and these kids just won't pay for anything will they Anyone know of any sites etc? Please. Ta
2. I'm frustrated as a bassist because I always wanted to be a singer...no a guitarist....or was it a pianist....trumpet player?...saxophonist? Oh damn it, I can't remember. Ooo, look, duck!!!!
3. The best bass player I've seen live was both musically and technically phenomenal. He shredded like a guitarist, actually I think he did everything, and had so much passion and beauty in his playing it was stunning and truly inspiring. And it all fitted in the context of the band. The whole band just kicked arse. And I'm not talking about a gig where people were just stood around like a bunch of cheering sycophants, the whole place was dancing, literally. Everyone came out of that gig wishing it could have gone on longer. A bit like Dingus' point, you've either got it or you haven't. Simple can be good but discount technical at your peril.
4. The Dave Marks video sums it all up nicely.
5.
I've actually turned up to an audition for an originals band and have had to show them how to play one of their own songs ! True The said they didnt know it cos they dont play it live
That's priceless
If you're playing with a band full of muppets, it doesn't matter if they're play covers or original material...!
I can only speak from experience, but I've never had a good time with covers. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that you don't have to put the work in, that it's easy, it doesn't matter if you don't even attempt to learn the songs etc etc. Very much a "that'll do" attitude, one I can't abide. My experience in originals has been very different. The people I've worked with care about what they're doing, put time in making sure that the songs they write and perform are done to the best of their ability. That's just my experience though.
6. Covers, I have decided, can be a soul destroying exercise. I thought I'd give it a go this week. Turn up for an 'audition', only got asked to learn two songs, not difficult. AND GUESS WHAT?!!? That's right, I was the only one who'd learnt them. Don't why I waste my freakin' time!!! AND, the supposed originals band I joined are mutating into a covers band. BUT, a lazy covers band where you guess what the chord progression is, because you can't be bothered to learn the songs, maybe sing 2 of the 4 verses, chuck in a chorus, if you remember, and then spend most of the 10mins you're playing the song to allow the guitarist to use it as an excuse to fret w***. And the songs they choose, how dull!!!
7.
This version is possibly even better?
I've got the double album that's on and Pino's playing is BRILLIANT!!
8. Barnstaple based band doing mostly original music looking for drummer who is willing to regularly practise and gig. Influences from Pink Floyd, Radio Head and Devon Townsend.... Really looking for someone who wants to have an Epic sound and has a versatile skill to bring something to our sound. Several songs in the pipeline but we are waiting for a drummer to join so we can have a united sound for gigs.
9. I have an audition for a covers band, well I say audition, more of a laid back run through a couple of songs, on Sunday. The material is ok and I may make a few quid. I have also just got back from practice with my originals band which is creating some really interesting stuff.
10.
Which particular halfs are you using?
Only the good halves. He puts the other half in the bin
11.
I staple mine to the back of the drummer's head.
I tend to try and not get that close to drummers, they have some strange habits,
12. Balancing a set list? Hmmmm. I tend to sticky tape mine to my amp or the floor, not chance of it falling off or flying away, belt and braces
13.
Should have updated this earlier, I've committed to buying an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection from this site actually. The red sold me. Hopefully it suits me well. Thanks all for your suggestions. I'll keep them in mind while I build my collection I used to live in Edinburgh. I miss it. Especially all those weird Polish meat shops on Leith Walk.
Congrats Teach me to skim read threads
14. My father in law is a keen fisherman so when I started talking about flatties there was some confusion and the conversation floundered.
15. Ibanez SR The 300 is blisteringly good for it's money, the new models can be bought for less than £250, which is a steal. If however you want a slightly different paint finish, the SR400 in Lavender Blue (quilt maple top), looks stunning. They're not listed on the UK Ibanez website but they are available in this country. They're
16. Too loud you say. This is an alien concept to most of us
17. Short scale. I've got an Ibby and neck length, for me, would be more of an issue that nut width etc. I also own a p bass and I've got rubbish hands but don't have a problem with it. Ok, it's easier to do fast fills etc on the Ibby but still, the P is still very playable for someone with all the dexterity of an elephant.
18.
That's right Marv, the Bournemouth killings were a long time ago. People should be more ready to forgive and forget, imho.
Some people just aren't as forgiving Anyway, onwards and upwards.
19. I wasn't in a covers band yesterday...but I might be today. I'm fickle and a band whore, I admit, I've no convictions...well apart from, actually less said about that the better.
20.
Ok, Black & rosewood with no pickguard & blue strings... Or with silver strings & pussy magnet...
My word that is sickenly pornographic
21.
Heh, and why I'm in a band with 2 16 year olds.... I like original stuff, I like the extended breaks between gigs. I have encountered an equal amount of egotistical tools on the covers circuit (which i've done a lot of). I am however probably about to hit the covers scene again (if i can find a like-minded bassist and drummer) as I am a bit skint, and reckon a 3-piece power trio playing obvious songs to drunken muppets could sort out my financial woes nicely. And I mean obvious, with my terrible singing and excessively long guitar solos which will go down fine in the pubs of devon. At 35 I have realised I can do both, quite easily, and one can fund the other. Both have their ups and downs, don't get free festival tickets off a covers band though.
Must be something about elder devonians You won't be short of bass players in North Devon, it's riddled with them Just don't play Sex on Fire, I don't think the pubs of devon can handle that any more. You could ask Jon Wines, although I don't think he's forgiven you for leaving the last covers band you were in together
22.
I'm lucky in that I really like the covers I play. Life's too short to play stuff you don't like.
You don't play Sex on Fire do you There are a few (and I stress few) bands I've seen doing covers that are different and that the band obviously enjoy playing. If I could find like minded people that would be great, as a fun side project. However, most covers bands, it seems, walk a well trodden path.
23. Covers bands are hard work. Learning all those songs, most of which I wouldn't normally give time of day to on my iPod. I'm trying my best to stay away from an out and out covers bands. The bands I'm in at the moment may do a few covers but it's original material first and foremost. I want to be in an originals band because I want to make people feel they way I've felt at the best gigs I've been to, and all of those have been to see originals bands. Thing is when people hit their mid 30's they seem to think that's it, life is over, I can't write any more, I'm confined to covers. Trying to find people to do original material is incredibly difficult, which may explain why I'm in a band with a guitarist who's 23
24. I put flats on my p bass recently, first time I've ever tried them. Absolutely great sound, especially for one of the bands I'm in. Sound even more lovely through the Ampeg cab I've just bought.
25.
I find many black basses rather boring, but they can also be very chic. I love the look of my MIJ '75 Jazz reissue, but I wouldn't have liked the look of it with a rosewood fingerboard and without the pickup cover.
This is a black bass and it is cool and very . I now need to go and change my underwear
