If Starlight are still going, they used to get me more money than I could ever persuade people to pay me off my own efforts/ -
I shared the same dentist with Delbert McClinton in Nashville years ago. Dentist had me in stitches one day with the following story. Delbert had dropped by and given the dentist a copy of his latest album, which the dentist really liked and was wearing out on the office musak system. He asked one of his patients, an older black gentleman, what he thought of the music they were listening to. "Sounds like some white boy trying to sing the blues to me" was the reply. Which of course puts all the various unlikely suggestions as to who would be good to listen to, to get a handle on the blues, in a slightly different light.

Someone just posted a B&W film from the 60's of the Temptations doing My Girl in the Hitsville studios on my FB timeline Obviously not the original session, but some great shots of the funk brothers including James.

Just to clarify that last one for CJL: Dr. Licks said HAL not BILL. P.S. Started gigging for pay in 1954/5 and I was a working bass player with a 1962 three color sunburst, rosewood board P bass the same as Jamersons in 1962. So I am at least a contemporary of theirs. Someone in "the trade" sent me one of the early copies of Dr Licks's book with those skinny el cheapo plastic promotional records in it & then I later got sent the version with a pair of cassettes in it. The first I ever heard of Carole Kaye was via Fred Vail of Treasure Isle recorders in Nashville when I lived and worked there - we had been talking about his involvement with the Beach Boys, for whom she definitely DID play. I never got the chance to talk to Bob Babbit when he moved to Nashville as I had "moved on" myself by then, so again no thoughts one way or the other. FWIW I suspect that what Carole did mostly was other versions of the hits she claims to have played on, making her claims entirely legitimate, if misleading in many cases. And I do agree with the sentiments expressed by most of us in this thread, both Carole and James were great players, why bother arguing about stuff that is so obviously beyond any realistic measurement of proof?

I made my living on the UK country circuit for many years & spent 10 years in Nashville as a working musician all through the eighties. Met and played with some of the greats. Trust me, country music IS simple music for simple people. But that doesnt mean it is easy to play. The art in country bass playing really is in the groove. Same applies to drummers. It really is hard for some people to just hit the groove and hold onto it in spite of the pyrotechnics coming from the guiraists, steelies fiddle players etc. And of course there are some interesting little rhythmic things involving things like slipping the odd bar of 2 into a 4/4 which generally destroys most rock and pop players. Try the Tennessee stud. 5/4 bluegrass. So dont approach it as "oh sh*t - all I get to do is root five" If you "get" it also and manage to find a decent country drummer to work with it is SO much more (or less, depending on how you look at it) A good way to understand country music is to find an article on how the Nashville Numbers system works, with emphasis on the things like staircases and diamonds. Just knowing the shorthand will help you tremendously

(grin) I think I found the way round this. Dont modify what you already have if you like it, just buy another bass to suit the style and then sell it as and when the gig ends. Much easier to sell a whole bass than a bunch of aftermarket addons P.S. And it is a great excuse to use on that Significant Other Who Doesnt Understand

I have to confess I am likely to be looking for players to form a band in the fairly near future and am dreading it. I already have offers from lots of friends who are good players but of cdourse every one of them already has a ton of gigs on their books so cannot commit 10)% or even 50%, understandably. The funny thing is that this has been exactly MY situation so I really do understand. Ah, well... time to start kissing frogs I guess.

relieved to hear it, Chris!

OOPS! Sorry, I glossed over "the rules as interpreted hereabouts" earlier. Forget I said anything.

Bit of a Corker From One of my Favourites - Tommy Cogbill

So many unsung heroes in Memphis and Nashville. Probably the same in other towns, but the sheer number of hugely talented players there are in that corridor between Davidson County and the Arkansas border is scary. -
Just so long as you have no expectations, my pal/drummer in my band is, to all intents and purposes, The Bolton Iron Maiden these days and their album generates about 20k a year for cancer research among others. Mind you it helps that the current Iron Maiden endorse the record and allow him space om THEIR website to promote it! It aint what you know, etc.....
Surely you MUST mean Bigby found out what Fender were going to do and exaggerated it a bit? After all Leo invented Everything guitar related didn't he?
Nope - the travis/bigsby guitar in the country museum hall of fame in Nashville predates the strat by a long way as far as I know. https://www.vintageguitar.com/1807/bigsby-merle-travis-electric-guitar/ Not a good photo but the story is there including dates and of course there are others.
