1.
Im not a big fan of effects, i think they make you (probably me) a lazy player, for years i've just plugged a lead into the amp for some true tone. Playing with effects imo seems mainly to cover up your true ability and allows you to get away with a lot more. Each time i try a pedal all that happens is the sound i like and can hear dissapears and is replaced by something else, usually lost in the mix, when i switch it back off it feels a bit like losing an arm, so i'd rather do without and try to do my very best using touch and tone directly from my fingers, concentrating on each note.. Saying all that im considering getting a compressor, but if im honest im not 100% sure what it will do for me, hopefully it will balance the sound from my Active Jazz so that when i "dance" off the octaves the D + G strings will sound equally as punchy as the E + A, if this makes sense. So go on, somebody explain exactly what a compressor will do for me and should i invest. Sell me a compressor with your wordsmithmanship !!! (am looking at an EBS multicomp btw) Oh i should add i have a DOD envelope filter at home, it was a great novelty, but went the way of the others and sat on the shelf for about 3 years now, might put it up for sale..
might help to think of compression as more of a "process" than an effect if that makes sense . A good one can bring a whisper up to the same level as a shout and not let you hear it working hard. Some ppl can't tell the difference though between a compressed and uncompressed sound. Does it have to be in pedal form or would you consider rack too? Saw a Symetrix 501 go for 125ish on ebay last week they're very good for the money and the rane dc24(?) works well on bass in that price range.. other pedals in that price range frantone sandwich, diamond bcp1 ,trace smx dual, mxr bass comp. There's also the cali 76 by origin which i was told sounds not very much like an 1176 but is still a good pedal. All worth checking out.

 7. I'd be happy to put some stuff up if i get time ,probably be wav or mp3 (?)
Okay, here's what's missing: World music section.... Unusual meter section..... The world music section should be geographically subdivided, and the funny-meter section should cross-reference the other entries (most often, this'll be 6/8 dances from whereverywhere) - Thus: Unusual Meter -> Simple Time -> /4 2/4 3/4 5/4 etc. World -> South America -> Brazil Afoxe, Afro-Brazilian 6/8, Bahiao, Bossa Nova, Choro, Frevo, Forro, Maracatu, Samba, Samba Reggae, etc., etc. Within each of those styles, we could have a couple of examples of each sort of music, a little discussion of the common theoretical aspects from each and how their application can affect groove (i.e. clave 'modulation' in Cuba, or swapping upbeeats in Jamaica). And we can have similarly long entries to Brazil for Cuba, Jamaica, Argentina, Indonesia, Bali, China, Japan, India (subdivided to Karnatka and Hindustani) and so on and on and on. It must be worth it! Even Baron VonWasteland's heinous plans should not put us off!
That sounds like a lot of work ,can't we just post something as "world/ethnic" ? What if i used a tabla plus a djembe in a loop? Why Does everything have to be so catergorised i mean.
This area isn't used much, is it? Perhaps it needs re-thinking or re-invigorating a bit.
which area?

 14. Cool .Has it got the paddle headstock or slimmer later one?
 15. The americans started that mach thing . Maybe they pronounce "mach" as "mark"? . The bass will be normal custom electronics but probably wont have the trim pot for the tones like the later ones (unless it's been to the factory and they've been retro fitted) But will still have the output level and pick attack trims. Had a couple with the on /off switch it's a cool ,rare feature . I've found the necks from 81-82 era generallty feel slimmer too ,so sounds like a nice bass. They sometimes have the silver transition period bridge too.
 16. Very sad to read of this ,like others here i was priveliged enough to meet him on a number of occasions Always great fun ,he'd go out of his way to help if he could, nothing ever too much trouble, He'll be missed by many r.i.p. Pete
 17. glad your having fun Bobby if memory serves there were only 35 made in the mary kaye finish ,there's a couple of threads on the ernie ball site . That's the original guard too that they put on them, lot of them seem to have suffered from that curling up thing .
