1. We've just recently started playing this, sounds like I need to listen to the bass part under the long solo a bit more closely! Usually goes down a storm though.
2. Welcome to Bucks. Bit further north of Aylesbury, you'll find Buckingham. The Kings Head have live bands most Fridays and Saturdays (shameless plug - my band is playing there this Friday!) There is also a "jam night" at the Blackbird pub in Padbury (just before Buckingham) on a Monday. "Band jam" is also now back on at the White Hart in Buckingham, I believe it's every Thursday but best to check beforehand. Alan.
3. Is the neck profile and width at the nut the same as a "standard" Fender Jazz?
4. Thanks Redsriper I will probably check out the G&L option. Having said that we had a rare rehearsal session last night and didn't suffer any shoulder problems. Next gig is a week on Saturday followed by a few weekends in sucession so will see how I get on then!
5. Thanks guys for the replies so far. I was wondering if any of the Fender USA Jazz bass options are lighter generally than the Mex ones. Presumably different types of wood make a difference to the weight.
6. I did wonder about an aerodyne myself, probably have to get along to a shop with a decent selection of basses and try a few out.
7. I've been using a MIM Fender Jazz bass for a few years now through my MarkBass amp etc. I reguarly get comments after gigs regards the "nice sound" from my bass so I am happy with the combination apart from the weight of my bass. However, being the wrong side of 50 (I still think I'm 21 though!) I have struggled recently with a bad shoulder after playing and wonder what the options are for a lighter bass. I really want to stick with a Fender Jazz and wonder if the USA examples are generally lighter - different woods etc. Some feedback from you Fender experts would be great. Thanks.
8. You may have seen it already, but there's a Fender Jaguar back up for sale on here at the moment.
9. Saturday night at the Red Lion, Brackley. Fantastic night with a full house. It makes a change to play to a packed pub and an audience who is up for a good time with live music.
10. Any chance of a pic of the dent in the neck - or description?
11. Welcome from another "local" bassist.
12. I'm thinking about getting hold of a "low budget" P bass and wonder if anyone has experience of the Bass Collection Power Bass. Saw them last weekend at the show but didn't get the opportunity to play one. Any feedback welcome. Thanks.
13. Being an "old git" I'll be hot-footing to the Rotosound stand Sunday lunchtime to hopefully meet an old hero of mine, Martin Turner, original bassist with Wishbone Ash.
14. Most pubs we play usually start at 9pm and go through to midnight. We play 1 hour first set, then half hour break, so 2nd set is usually 9.30pm to midnight or thereabouts.
15. Pick most of the time, but fingers on some numbers. I always suffer with blisters when trying to use fingers too much as I think I probably play too heavily - any advice to prevent them?
16.
Hmm, I'm trying to find an excuse to have this off you, but just can't afford it straight up. I have a fantastic MarkBass New York 604 which I could consider exchanging, but don't really want to part with it - and it's not what you've said you'd be looking for anyway, so guess that's a non starter... I'll keep scratching those lottery tickets...
I might be interested in your New York 604 if you fancy selling so you can buy the 8 x 10. PM me if interested.
17. We usually play Run Run Rudolph as well. For a slow and cheesy number, we have also played Mud's Lonely this Christmas.
18. We've recently started finishing our set with a slow number at the end of the night as a "final encore". We found that the audience generally kept wanting more "encores" if we kept on the lively rock type numbers. Adding a slow number at the very end seemed to have a calming influence and everyone really believed them that we were finishing!
19.
Not sure if it was overdubbed but Humble Pie's 'Performance - Rockin' the Filmore' sounds very live. You can hear beer bottles being clanked during quiet bits.
Fantastic album and the first album I ever bought!.
20.
I've just started doing backing vocals for our covers band and it's one of the most frustrating things I've ever attempted! I've found though after being useless for a while, something just clicks with the rhythms and it gets much easier almost straight away. Playing the basslines until you dont need to think about them is the key, as mentioned above.
I agree, again as someone who has started doing some backing vocals for a covers band. Being of the "older generation", one of my bass heroes is Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash who incredibly (IMO) manages to sing and play fairly complex bass lines at the same time!
