Today's bump is brought to you from Stockholm where I am told Tom Jones is gigging tonight. He obviously did not know I was available for bass duties ....
there's a very nice vintage guitar shop in Stockholm - I remember turning left by a bridge somewhere!!
It's more like whatever bridge you've got will need to be moved back, unless your saddles are far enough forward that you can move them all back by about 15mm (for a 34" scale bass). Why do you want to put a 20 fret neck on?
oh just cos I'd been looking at the Status graphite ones and they are all 20 fretters - cheers for all the feedback guys
Here's a pic of my new Elan 5, taken this morning. Now do I leave it as is (other than get a replacement truss rod cover in brass, which is on order) or do I get it re-finned in deep gloss black (like Jason Newsted and Jazzyvee's Elan 5) or in a see-through black that shows the flame of the wood through it? Decisions .....
what sort of impact will a re-fin have on any re-sale value? I like it as it is, but I tend to like natural/wood finishes

This beauty is for sale at £750, OVNO. It has fantastic vintage tone, a fretboard like butter, a dead straight neck, and loads of life left in the frets. Ash body, one-piece U-shaped maple neck with 7.25”-radius fingerboard. Three way switch (bridge/middle/neck) and brass bridge saddle. I've never gigged it, and cosmetically it has only some wear to the paint at the jack socket (pics show this) and some playing scuffs on the pickguard. Classic vintage tweed case included with all original candy, ashtray cover, plus extra bridge to replace the vintage style one currently on if required. (Has only five strings on it at the moment because I was playing a la Keith Richards, who I belivee used to or still does play with only 5 ) All in all, it's a pretty good bargain, as these cost well over a grand new. It can deliver sweet blues sounds with a splash of reverb, clean country, or plain full on rock. Or just whatever really. I'm only selling because I want to fund something else, and tbh I don't really get to play it with anyone. I'm finding that the bass i rehearse or write on rarely makes it to the gigs - even tho I start off with the best of intentions to use something else I keep returning to the solidity of my US G&L 2000 - and I think it's that solidity which makes me gravitate towards it somehow - heavy, but so solid -

Warwick - Give me the good, the bad and the ugly.
This talk of truss rod problems; it stems from a few of the earlier basses and as has been pointed out, it's likely as much to do with ham-fisted adjustment as it is too do with anything else. I have to say that I've owned dozens (and I mean 'dozens') of Warwick basses and I've NEVER had an issue with a rod. I did have one rod that someone had been using the incorrect size allen key to adjust and it was a bit chewed but that was easily sorted. The other thing is that 99.9% of the problems with a Warwick truss rod are an easy and relatively inexpensive fix (the truss rods are removable without recourse to taking off fingerboards etc.). However, their is one BC owner who had a problem with his TR and unluckily for him the rod wouldn't tap out so his luthier did need to do a major bit of work to get it out. Saying that there probably isn't a large scale manufacturer out there that hasn't had some kind of issue with some aspect of their bass but things can end up being blown out of proportion. I personally have no problem or worry with Warwick TRs but if I couldn't try one in the flesh before buying I'd reckon on worst case scenario maybe £75 to fix any problem... then again I'd only be buying an old model anyway not one of the new ones!
thanks for clearing that up - very helpful and re-assuring. -

i find this hard to accept about the truss rod experiences on here - That a guitar of such obvious build quality has this flaw with its truss rods - Really??? I guess even more so as I feel I am edging towards an eventual Warwick purchase.. -
yep that's what i thought, ie. that the bridge might need to be replaced - hmm

Can I put a 20 fret neck on a bass body that originally had 21 frets? Will there be any intonation issues?
It's kind of hard to see from the pic but it doesn't look like the solder has flowed onto the pot correctly, hence the sort of bubble effect. Maybe that's why it's not working.
okay - i'll have another go then - ta

yeah i think the regularity and practise is perhaps the key - we never get a concerted run at gigs, life gets in the way...

the comment, NOT the band. Thought they were dreadful also.
Switched over to see the 250th show... I lasted a few minutes into the MAnics song...they were woeful. And I mean WOEFUL. I've heard rough pub bands jamming a better song. You know that time when a band is so far past it, they paraody everything..well, that was it. IMO. Totally totally benused from Tunbridge Wells
JIGSTER likes this

Been meaning to post this for awhile as it's on my mind almost everytime I gig. How easy do people find it to be 'in the moment' when gigging. Is it just an experience thing, the more you do etc..? I find with some gigs that the balance between being aware of the audience and being in the moment with the band is a delicate line to tread. Sometimes, I find myself either listening to my sound, or trying to be conscious of connecting with the crowd and not just standing there shoegazing, and what I've actually done is stroll through a song on muscle memory. It bothers me as I see our guitarist and he looks lost in the moment, and I'm standing outside, watching myself and 'listening' to the band. One of the things I've always loved about music is how it makes me feel, but I get this disconnection of feeling with my own music. I should say this isn't all the time - and pretty much never in rehearsals - but has happened at enough gigs to start to pi** me off. I have wondered if it's because I also sing that this happens. I can't just get on and groove because I have to do something else as well. Any thoughts would be good to read.

I usually play this through my Berg HS4x10 - but sweet tones this morning between the Orange and my newly acquired Nash jazz - the Bassman really does warm the sound so pefectly and just rounds everything out - I have a ss amp for gigging if I feel the need, but I really can't see how ANYTHING can imitate or get near to a true valve sound.. hey out7ined have opened the bass up and what you were saying may well be right in terms of the vol control not being very functional - looks scorched doesn't it - but I was playing the bass this morning and the vol actually does work, but within a VERY small parameter.. oh well, i like it loud anyways!! if i get some time i might buy a new pot and re-apply.. thanks for your help with this generally
