Whoever plays short solos only when they absolutely have to and always play for the song are my heroes.

How easily replaceable are you for your band?
Low End Bee replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
it wouldn't be easy as I'm the youngerst and prettiest
Horribly true;) -
Former pupils at my school included Andy Fraser, Glen Matlock and Mikey 'Culture Club' Craig. Also former Brentford manager and professional swearer Wally Downes.

I am the band. The band is me. That goes for all three of us. It would be a different band if any of us left. We'd have to start from scratch. -
Nice touch parking this thread in Basses. Keeps the riff-raff out.
I'm a rebel me. I don't play by the rules. Apart from considerate parking and queue discipline. Which I'm a stickler for.
...God knows, Marillion wouldn't still be going were it not for the DIY punk ethos. The desirability of said outcome will depend upon one's tastes. .
It's true. Marillion are 467 times more punk than Green Day could ever be. Punks lasting legacy is probably the DIY ethos in music.

There's a couple of punk bands who became a lot less interesting to me once they learnt how to play. As I said on the Macca thread though. The music industry are the ones who really did for a lot of the pre punk artists. A fickle bunch of pimps and thieves. You can't blame some spotty 15 year olds with Woolworths guitars for ruining the music you liked pre the glorious revolution. It was some bean counter in a flared 3 piece at CBS, Chrysalis, Virgin or wherever that did for 'em.

This ability thing worries me. I can enjoy a 2 minute Lurkers thrash equally as much as a 10 minute Gentle Giant track. Both songs will be played to suit their context. Maybe the Lurkers have more 'ability' as they can get the job done quicker?

Just so it doesn't clog up other threads we can have our two bobs worth here
If you say so, but to me the whole thing seemed horribly destructive. I quite understand a backlash against pap like "How deep is your love" but IMO it really did throw the baby out with the bathwater.
It's for another thread really. But I'd blame the 'music biz' if I where you. They jumped ship because they could see a quick buck in punk and nobody wants yesterdays papers.

I must only play with nice people. Shared my rig loads of times and never had a problem. I wouldn't let any one use it unless they'd asked in advance though.
That's the legacy of punk for you. Punk demanded you ignored everything that was ever understood to be commonly accepted wisdom about music - including the idea that to make music you should know something about it.
I think you're reading too much into punk. I would say it's goals were to eradicate ELP and wear straight trousers.
My fave JJ moment: When the bass comes in on Hanging Around. It really sounds like the bass amp is actually in your room, playing along to the track. Fantastic bass moment that.
Oh yes Lozz. Oh yes. The story can be told in full as I met my cousin for the first time in years last week and he verified what my dodgy memory wasn't totally sure of. My 14 year old self was wondering which instrument to take up as I knew I wanted to be in a band. I popped around to see my older cousin Gary who was playing guitar in a pub blues band so I thought he would be a good person to ask. I told him my predicament. He smiled got a copy of the newly released Rattus Norvegicus out of its cover and put the needle to Hanging Around on the record player. I think I said something like "That sound. I want to make that sound". Bass it was. Thanks Gary and thanks JJB.

"I can't make it. I've got to look after Jeb Bush" " Jeb gets on the phone "Sorry guys. Have a good rehearsal" Not a lot I could say really.
That would explain it... possibly the cheese i have been playing with them has managed to alter their physical structure on an atomic level, alchemy if you will. Or it could be that i play a lot of gigs, and beat the picks too bloody hard... I prefer the first one though.
Maybe you mistook some Dairylea triangles for picks in the dark?
-
I have worn out 3 of them in the last year, and I only use a pick on 3 songs in the set...
Are they made of cheese!

I use Clayton 1.07mm big tortex triangles. Last ages. I moved from the Dunlop blue 1.0mm big triangles as they just feel a bit nicer.
That's like.. one of my favorite Zep songs. Hating it is like hating Bob Marley. And NO ONE hates Bob Marley.
Me and Scratch Perry do.I absolutely love reggae but I can't abide Bob Marley. D'Yer Make'er is one of the ultimate poo cod reggae tunes. I'll throw in the Stones 'Hey Negrita' too. They make Dreadlock Holiday sound roots.

The RetroSonic podcasts. http://soundcloud.com/retrosonic-podcast I haven't got the editing/mastering quite right yet. Log fires, crisps, beer, red wine, swearing, shuffling bits of paper, stories too litigious or not for our wives ears didn't help. I'm learning on the job and it will get tighter as we do more and I know what all the buttons are for. Some good tunes and chat though. Including Big Red X's band. Uploaded so far the pilot show, The first real one and an interview with rock photographer Paul Slattery.

New stripped-down Rattlin Bone spinoff :-) 'Voodooville'

Nice one Mr C. -
I tried 6 or 7 before I bought my Precision nearly 4 years ago. All the same spec. One was nicer than all the others and one was nastier than all the others. The in between ones were fine. I'd never buy a Fender untested. It's a real shame the nicest one was sunburst. The hated colour is finally growing on me now though. I must be getting old.
