1. Definitely not a Jubilee related gig on Sunday. Should be a lot of fun.
2. I always carry a DI box too. If I've an audience who've paid to see my band I'd rather carry loads of gear that will hopefully go unused so I don't waste their money watching me rectify a fault. If I'm gigging with a band/s I know well I will sometimes have a gentlemans agreement that our basses and amps will be each others back ups in the event of a failure.
3. Les Paul Junior with a harsh P90 please.
4. I got fed up with carrying a back up that I never used. So at a gig in Croydon a couple of months ago I just took the one bass. The A string broke (the first broken string since 1984!) on sound check and I had a flustering few minutes putting a new one on. Lucky it didn't happen later during the set. I'm taking the 'useless' back up to gigs again.
5.
Still waiting on my new tubes and fan I ordered last weekend to arrive! But in the meantime I'll leave you with my solution to sitting an OTB on top of an Ampeg SVT210AV, which not only has a handle on top but 4 countersunk cups which are only any good if you're stacking another cab or the Micro VR head on top. This should also prevent the head going walkies and cut down vibrations which might improve tube life. Closed cell foam from ebay, cut with a stanley knife and holes made by hand with a large drillbit.
Great idea. I gaffa tape mine to the handles of my TC cab. It doesn't look as nice but it works.
6. I like to have them worn in a little For a few reasons. They will stay in tune better. They won't rattle on the frets as much. They will be less likely to chew up my fingers when I have to play the same phrase 18 times on the trot because I keep cocking it up. I used a week old set of D'Addario Pro Steels at a days recording last Saturday and they sounded very lively still.
7. As long as the monitor mix is good I'm not too fussed what is going on with the boxes behind.
8.
Sheds and laptops make the best studios. Bands get noticed off the back of home recordings. Real studios kill feeling.
I'm not sure I agree with that. A person on the desk with good gear and a good ear who knows what he's doing will have a much better shot at capturing the 'feel' of a band.
9. I prefer to have strings that are about week or two old. I'd leave what you've got on if you haven't time to play new ones in.
10. Nice. Retroman captured our new song Debbie Harry on Friday. Not too shabby for its first outing.
11. Rotten luck Mr C. I hope we were worth it? Lovely to see you and Silvia there. Great fun gig last night.
12. 2007 Am Std S1 Precision - Does the job . Makes the sound I want. Works in the band and on recordings. Comfortable too play and pretty light. Not a fan of sunburst but it's not offending me any more. The white scratchplate it came with lasted a week until I could get a black one. The S1 switch which works really well on a Jazz I played but is useless on a P. In the bin too. The pickup got swapped out for a Wizard Thumper which gave me the little extra I was after. I can't see myself using or needing anything else. Retrovibe RV4 Rickenmusicmanbacker - Really excellent for the money. Does an excellent job of sitting at the back of the stage patiently waiting for a string to break or a connection to go on the Precision. If I do play it the lack of a forearm chamfer gets a bit uncomfortable after a while. That's it. Two basses. I'm not getting this GAS thing am I?
13. Guitar note. Somebody pointed out to me that the volume control on that Prawnocaster is liable to be unintentionally adjusted on every strum.
14.
Our typical day (10-6ish) gets us three tracks. 5 piece band recorded live (in glorious analogue) with guide vocal. As long as a good drum take is down, the bass, guitars and keys can be redone/dropped in if necessary then extra guitar/key tracks if required. Vocals and bv, mixed and mastered. £180 all in! And the pleasure of working with Jim Riley at Ranscombe Studios
I've heard good things about Ranscombe. Very cheap too!
15. I've just had a listen around on the interweb to some bands (no Basschatters involved as far as I know. Don't worry) studio recordings that paid around the same as we will for our next session/mixing and have now decided we're getting excellent value for money. They all sound like demos! I've had to unskinflint my thinking and accept we were just getting a bargain earlier.
16.
On a side note though, that semi-hollow geetar, second from the left is lush!..
That's from Fenders 'prawn shop' range.
17.
THE QUESTION Could this be the only fender that BRX would like? Find out next week on... Basschat (Cue music from "soap")
Oh no no no. A modern 5 string with upper fret access it's not.
18. Interested to know how much you all pay for your recording? We've been on a good deal recently but now we've had a bit of a steep price increase on our recording quote. Not sure if it's still good.value. I love the results we get so we may just have to swallow it anyway. We only look at doing 3 tracks at a time. Bass and drums with a guide guitar and vocal. Guitar track/overdubs and (rarely) extra percussion. Vocal track. Normally about 8 hours in the studio for that. Then mixed/mastered. Nothing fancy. How much do you think we should be forking out?
19. "Who ordered 1000 left hand Jaguar basses when I only asked for 10? We'll never get rid of them" "Have they been routed yet?" "No" "All may not be lost...."
20. Interesting take on pop from a Cherry Red offshoot label.
21. On stage 9pm off by 10pm. Plenty of time to treat Mrs C.
22. Everybody's crazy about a sharp dressed band. New song 'Debbie Harry' gets its live debut. Two other bands who are modtastic. See you there.
23. Have a top gig Clarky type bump.
24. Updated with correct gig dates
