1. When will you have yours done Dave and who's doing the work? I can't wait to hear the outcome
2.
With my crap hearing I also find a P a bit woolly which needs to be tightened a bit. For a short while I had a Fender Aerodyne and found the mix of P and J pick-ups very fleible and to my liking so I decided to go for it with the DD. We shall soon see if I've been wasting my money.
Dave - if I go ahead with the mod, will I have to ditch the Fralin P pup fitted as standard and buy the set or can I just buy the J pup?
3. Stunning Peter
4.
I lean much more to the view that a P's a P and a J's a J - why mix them? But it took me years to get to that, and my old PJ fretless was a bit lovely. BB
I agree but my band don't like me using a P Bass cos in their opinion - it's too wooly and indistinct (is that a word?) - they like a Jazz or Musicman type sound. I have this lovely Lakland Duck Dunn that looks and plays lovely and I'd like to keep it but don't see the point in having it if I can't use it. I realise I could tell 'em to disappear up their own yoohoos but thought adding a J pup would be a good compromise.
5. If I lost an arm, I'd bloody well go and look for it.
6. The P pup is a Fralin and if I was going ahead, I'd probably go for a Fralin J. They actually make a PJ set so I'm assuming any issues re; humming / output would have been resolved. Making me think now that I should just sell / swap the bass. It'd probably be simpler
7. Mmmmm...interesting BB - thanks.
8. Nice Russ, pity you're selling it but I know you've thought long and hard about it.
9. I use a LMII with 2 Bergantino 1x12s and it's nice and compact and very loud too.
10. If I finish packing my case I might venture across the Pennines - assuming those of a red rose persuasion are welcome . If I do, I'll bring my Lakland Duck Dunn and Darryl Jones with me. I fancy seeing the Welsh T band on my way home - time permitting.
11. Aha! ...it's you!! Sorry about the scratchy pot. Hope the head gives you as much good service as I got from it.
12. guyl, I had a 1001RBII - it was rackmounted in a shallow 3U SKB case with a Korg tuner immediately above it. The tuner was right up to the fan but didn't cover it. I gigged with it every week for about 8 months with no problems at all and it never got warm.
13.
I have never understood this "artist" thing. what the heck is wrong with being a bassplayer/musician/writer - or entertainer if the music isn't as important as the appearance? personally, I avoid people who make sounds but feel the need to classify themselves as artists. diiferent mindset.
A man after my own heart - people who refuse to be pidgeon-holed unite.
14. I'm just a gifted amateur with no aspirations to be an artist.
15.
I've taken the plunge Al and sent the DD body off to have the routing done for a bridge jazz pick-up. Also having a side jack fitted and a battery box put in to give me maximum future flexibity.
Can't wait to hear how it all turns out Dave
16. Hello Stu, I had the same problem with a Precision when I changed the pickguard. The wiring looked fine to me so I bought some conductive copper adhesive strip from axesrus.co.uk and put some on the back of the pickguard where the pup mountings are and also across all the holes where the tone/vol pots are. Still buzzing so I lined the pick up cavity and the control cavity with the copper stuff and still it buzzed. Then my good friend greeneking joined the copper in the pup cavity with the copper strip in the control cavity with a bit of solder and hey presto no more buzzing. Hope that helps.
17. I've played this and it's a beauty - Cameron's a gentleman too, buy with complete confidence.
18. Thinking of adding a J pup to my P bass and was wondering if anyone would like to share their experiences before I go ahead. Would like to know the usual stuff ...how much? Did it spoil the bass? Does it mean having a cover on the back of the bass etc? What did it do to the overall tone of the bass? etc etc.... Ta muchly
19. A ebay gig last night. Drove 40 odd miles to play for 3 people. Sound was awful, band was all over the place. It has to be better tomorrow or everything will go on ebay on Monday.
20. No John - rosewood comes a standard.
21. If I may reply on behalf of Dave - he and I both swear by DR Sunbeams.
22. Here's another..
23. Ok here's mine with the mint green jobby. Difficult to photograph in the current Northern gloom. First - with original for reference.. Minty...if you look at the binding at the end of the neck, you might see a difference in colour
24. I must admit that I had thoughts of a clear scratchplate when I saw it without the pickguard! I like it with the mint green one I've stuck on - but I must admit it does look a bit odd with the pure white binding on the neck. Methinks an aged white pearl from Roger at Jeannie's (who makes Lakland's scratchplates) is on the cards when I get back from holiday. I did have to put copper tape on the back (it hummed) but I always do that anyway. I've sorted the string imbalance thing out - I just changed the strings to my usual DR nickels - didn't like the original strings at all. I've also tried some LaBella Deep Talkin' flats on it and if I was just using it in the bedroom - they'd definitely stay on but the rest of the band don't like the sound of flats so I've put the nickels back on for now. I think I will stick with this bass - it's put together beautifully, it's relatively light and well balanced, stays in tune and the neck is sublime but I think I will change the pup at some point - possibly adding a J pup as well (PJ combination is my ideal). We'll see.
25.
Next step might be to add the Lindy bridge jazz pick-up.
I'll watch that with interest Dave - a PJ set up would be perfect for me.
