Just got a new bass and can't decide whether to buy a good gig bag or for the same money, a reasonable case...

If you ever watch the Who now and wonder ...
niceguyhomer replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
Just wanted to put my two penneth as a semi fan and someone who was lucky enough to see 'em live with Moony on the drums. I could be wrong, but I often think there's a tendency to compare bands like The Who and FWIW - The Beatles with what's around now or has gone on since and to me, it's wrong. I've said this before and I know I'm a boring old fart, but you had to be around at the time to see the impact these bands had at the time and to make a proper judgement in the context of what else was going on then. -
The old cliche is "Alright Now" - bollox I say, play and be damned.

I love that 55-02 Sean - I'm GASsing for one badly. I used to have a 55-01 and never should have sold it. As a matter of interest, how long did you wait for your pickguards? I rang Roger the other night and he nearly jumped out of his skin when I told him where I was calling from. Chatted to him for about 20 mins - nice bloke.

Bootsy Collins' Sex Machine - I'm 90% there but I can't play it properly at the right speed. -
North West Bass Tutor - Are You Interested in Lessons in 2010?
niceguyhomer replied to nickcarey's topic in Tutors Available
Nick's been my tutor for several months now and he's really brought my playing on no end. He's a top bloke and deserves a big fat yellow bassist recommendation from the donut man. -
Greg Koch - what a guy, what a guitarist - wish I could be there.

How Many Readers Of This Site Actually Go Out And Gig?
niceguyhomer replied to bass_in_ya_face's topic in General Discussion
I only play to gig, I love playing live and if I wasn't in a band I probably wouldn't pick up a bass or guitar again - that's my choice. I certainly wouldn't look down on anyone or make stupid comments to anyone who chose to do otherwise. It's your time and you fill it with whatever gives you pleasure and b*llocks to the brain-dead fungi who talk through their dirtboxes. -
I've just bought your old black DJ - now with a J-Retro and Hipshot Extender - looking forward to getting my sticky mitts on it.

So many basses, so little time

Wouldn't life be boring if nobody had GAS and stuck with the same equipment. There'd be no For Sale Forum and the only updates in Bass Porn would be changing the pictures from black and white to colour.

Just how luvverly are Epifani's UL310's??
niceguyhomer replied to onehappybunny's topic in Amps and Cabs
Superb cab Stu, very light (a genuine single hand lift) - it doesn't feel anything like 47lbs. Very loud, articulate and punchy as hell. I used mine in all sizes of rooms without PA support and it did a fine job with my GK 1001RBII head. I'd have another. -
Middle age and learning new songs
And you think you've got a problem at 52 Homer.
You mean it's gonna get worse?? -
At the gig the schroeder sounded absolutely majestic. I had no problem getting the sound I wanted with the MAG's eq flat, just adjusting the J-retro. I mostly used a sound I found that I absolutely loved. It cut right through the mix, but also had warmth without any wooliness. It was almost like I have previously been playing with a duvet over the speakers when I used other cabs.
That's the thing with them - they sit absolutely right in the mix. When I was selling my 410R, another BCer tried it in a small studio with his band and he was stood right on top of it. He didn't buy the cab because to him and his other bandmates it sounded very middy which is true when you're 3 feet away from the cab. If he had been able to walk 20 - 30 feet away, he would have heard a tight, punchy, deep bassy sound. They only do studio work so the 410R was not right for him but for gigging bassists, I think Schroeder are the poodles plums.

Middle age and learning new songs
I'm 52, by the way.
Me too -
I have set myself a project to learn a load of Steely Dan songs and I'm finding it really hard going I'm using the tab off my Guitar Pro programme and the problem isn't learning the notes / structure etc, it's my failing memory. I've been up since 6.30 learning the middle section of Ricky Don't Lose Than Number and yeh, it's not that hard but then I go downstairs and make myself a drink and when I go back to my den 10 minutes later, I can't remember big chunks of what I just learned and have to go over it all again. I wouldn't mind but I must have played it through 20 times What an arse...

The Perception of Bass Players
niceguyhomer replied to bass_in_ya_face's topic in General Discussion
Sadly, the world is full of ignorant people and being honest, I used to be one of them when I was a guitarist cos at the time, I never listened to what the bassist was doing and wasn't interested in his bass or rig. I'd only heard of a Fender Precision, could only name about 3 bassists and wondered why anyone wanted to play the thing. I used to get all the wannabees watching my fingers / checking out my gear / quizzing me after the set / compliments about your tone type stuff but since switching to bass I'm just a fat bastard who can't play a guitar. Frankly, I couldn't give a toss so long as I'm enjoying myself. What Chappers said is true - if you (the bassist) stop playing during a song, the arse falls out of it. If the guitarist stops mid song (as ours frequently does to fiddle incessantly with his pedal knobs), life goes on and nobody notices. To me, that speaks volumes and on that note I rest my case for the bass. -

Well I just got back and spoke to the singist - my job's safe!!!! Apparently, I fill out the bottom end better which I take to mean my arse is fatter Had a fantastic time - here's a pic of me 'n Marge in Chania having lunch on her birthday... Here's me 'n Marge on the beach at Almirida, I'm gesturing at some Germans just out of shot..

Thanks for your support fellas The last bassist - Nick (you were right Steve) turned professional and left the band to concentrate on building that up, I hope it stays that way. Thanks for all the tips about where to go in Crete - I'll definitely be doing Elafonisi, the drive through the White Mountains to Chora Sfakion is a must as is a trip into Chania - all that stuff, we absolutely love the place. Weather is going to be mid 30s and sunny every day - perfect. Now then...pass me the raki....

I'm taking the family to Crete for a week tonight and it's going to cost me a shedload. While we're away, there's two birthdays - my eldest daughter is 20, my wife is 50 on Thursday and on Sunday, it's our 30th wedding anniversary BUT, that's not what I'm worrying about, no sir. While we're away, I got the former bassist of my band to stand in for me and unlike me, he's absolute class on four strings. I'm praying he breaks a string or something cos I'm worried that I'll get sacked while I'm away... Pray for the fat yellow bloke will ya.

Just a quick update - I was a bit unsure about my new cab after the first gig last week, which was in a long, narrow room with stone floors and walls. It sounded a bit middy but last night we played in a 'normal' room - carpet / curtains / tables & chairs etc and I had the castors on and it sounded great. I think you do lose a bit of bottom end but it sounded tighter to my ears, the castors are staying on mine.
