1.
Homer, I do have a BG, though I'm going to hang on to that P
How does it sound? Does it sound like a Fender P or is it deeper / darker / whatever?
Oh no! And I can't afford it back I've just ordered a Villex Booster for my BG. Going to keep the tone pot and stack it with the volume. I think it'll sound pretty awesome if the Squier Tigran had at the bash is anything to go by. A Darkstar would be nice but all that woodwork? The Lindy Fralins will have to do. The Sterling btw is a cracker if anyone's interested. Peter
Hello Peter - not really sure what I want to do yet but I'm curious why you're adding a Villex Booster - is there something lacking in the BG?
2. Gulp ..thought about doing this myself Mike.
3. I've always wanted a BG or a DD, I think my Sterling's days are numbered
4. Spiffnifficent indeed
5.
Not selling already??????????????????
Nope but d'ya wanna buy a Sterling?
6.
Anyone know how much these go for second hand?
PM sent
7. I have real highs and lows with my sound. My rig at the moment is a GK1001RBII head into a GK 2x12 neo and in some rooms it sounds great and in others it's poo. I thought I liked 12s but I'm beginning to think 'my sound' will only be achieved with a 2x10 and a 1x15 underneath it. Headwise - I've been curious about those Line 6 Bass Pod Pros and I know a lot of people are really happy with them but what puts me off is I'm a complete technophobe and don't have the patience to read manuals. The journey continues for me
8. Thanks for the J-Retro tips Dave - I'll have a dabble tonight.
9. Great collection Tony - really liking the Yammy - nice colour too. I have a Nordstrand loaded Sterling too, it looks exactly like this...
10.
Very nice. I'd vote for black too. What's it sound and play like?
It's quite a heavy beast with the ash body but I actually don't mind that - it plays like butter and the neck is the closest thing to perfection I've played. It's got a nice low action and the string spacing is quite wide which suits my big hands. Soundwise, it's a completely different sound to my departed 'Ray and my other current bass, which is a Sterling. It's very deep and powerful and gets the trousers flapping in a way I haven't felt for quite a few basses. Tone is very much 70s rather than vintage and it's got a slap tone to die for. I actually prefer the passive tone rather than active and at first, I was going to remove the J-Retro to give me more control with the passive tone but I'm going to play with it a bit and see if I can get used to the the preamp. I've used it at two gigs now and on Saturday, we were having problems with the sound. It was a wide room with a high ceiling - which had a big, raised tent-like section in the middle and a hollow boomy stage. I soundchecked with the DJ and it sounded fat and bassy but there wasn't much definition to my sound even when we'd fiddled with the EQ to compensate because of the room effects. So I switched to my trusty Sterling and believe it or not, there was still no definition and all the bottom end disappeared. Needless to say I switched back to the DJ and when the dance floor filled up with a few bodies, the overall band sound improved dramatically. Really loving it.
11.
Very, very nice Alan. It's making me think that perhaps I need a black instead of mirror on my black DJ5. Oh and the J-Retro is not the de-luxe.
The black one was just an afterthought TBH - I was talking to Roger for about 20 mins and at the end of the conversation, I said I wanted the black cherry tort. He said he'd do another one at a good price with nothing extra to pay for shipping so I just said "...make me a black one too". It was less than half the price of the BC tort but as soon as I laid it on the bass, I knew the tort was going into storage. It looks even better in the flesh. I realise the J isn't a Deluxe - dunno where that came from.
12. Thanks for all the kind comments fellas - you could be right Sibob, I just assumed it was a Deluxe like the halfwit I am
13. Here's my latest - used to belong to Platypus and Psychoandy and now it's mine. I've had it about 3-4 weeks now but wanted to wait until my new pickguards arrived from Jeannie's Pickguards before posting - it had a boring plain white on before. It has Aero pups, a J-Retro Deluxe, a Hipshot drop D thingy and a new set of DR Sunbeams on it. Oh and I bought a new Hiscox case for it - very nice too. The black cherry tort pickguard in this pic is just resting on top of the black one which is why it looks like there's a gap.
14. Agggggggggghhhhhhhhhh....the agony continues, I got a card through the door today - looks like they're at the Post Office awaiting payment of customs charges of £14.65. Not bothered about that, what bothers me is I can't collect 'em until tomorrow morning - assuming the b*stards aren't on strike. Looking forward to a real bonding session tomorrow - new pickguard / DR Sunbeams / a polish and a tweak - maybe even post some pics.
15. We'll be just up the road from you in Uncle Tom's Cabin (Blackpool - North Shore) tonight otherwise I'd have been there to see you - have a good'n.
16. I'm 52 - playing in a band keeps me sane and young at heart. The thing that amazes me since I've been playing bass (I've been a gigging guitarist since puberty) is that I 'feel' the music now and feel closer to my instrument somehow. I never got that playing guitar where you just go through the boring strumming process looking forward to your next lead break.
17. Might see you there on the Saturday Matt providing Friday night's gig isn't a grueller.
18. Hello Platypus - been using it in active mode so far.
19.
I have to agree. Best neck I've ever played. It is effortless. Black and white twisty is Aero. It would be interesting to A/B yours and mine one day to hear the difference between Fralins and Aeros. Maybe the next national Bash.
Sounds like a plan Dave - and yes I'll still have it then!
20. I'm pretty sure they're Aeros Dave - a quick look behind the s/plate revealed black & white twisty stuff but I can't see any insulation. I'll have a proper look when the new s/ps arrive from Roger. I have to say it's a very nice bass - seems to do everything really well. I really love the neck, in fact I'll go so far to say it's the best neck I've had on any of my two hundred basses.
21.
What ones did you order? Is this covered elsewhere?
I've ordered a black/white/black and a black cherry tort - a kind of vintage looking tort so Roger tells me - can't wait to get them, got some new DR Sunbeams waiting to go on too. I'll post some pics when they arrive. Done two gigs with the DJ now - loving it -very different sound to what I'm used to but very deep and powerful..
My last package took at least a couple of weeks or so I wouldn't worry yet. It's probably stuck in the postal dispute.
Thanks Dave.
22. Thanks Peter
23.
Hey mate I'd love to try that 112 out some time if you fancy getting together I could bring my 310 for a comparison, may ask homer along with his neo 212? Cheers Mike
Always game for a bit of collaboration - tell me when.
24. I'm lucky that I don't suffer with nerves but other members of the band do, and that manifests itself in a number of ways - from incessant knob twiddling through to hissy fits etc. A tip I was given once when doing talks to large numbers of people is to make eye contact and smile/nod with some people in the audience before proceedings begin. It helps to break the ice and relaxes the atmosphere somehow. I keep visiting the friendly faces during the gig and smiling - works for me.
