1. Wow, got enough winding on your string pegs there? Looks like a beauty, If I wasn't saving for an old one........well, then I'd be a bit richer......but I am, so good luck Si
2. I actually have triplets.......I'll have to hit ped up for that photo shoot Si
3. If anyone is floating about Shorditch tonight, come and see your faviroute BassChat live hiphop band ! We're headlining, so onstage about 10:30, 3 bands on before hand, around £7 on the door I think, although If I know you're coming I can get you cheap list, which probably only makes it around £6 but hey, every little helps Here's the facebook event for those who partake in such activities!: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=512...1549&ref=ts Cheers all Si
4. Thanks very much Bubinga! Rudy's was the one I was trying to find, but couldn't remember the name Cheers Si
5. I've seen one on BassNW But we'll see, just options! I would love another jazz Andrew, but I have three lovelies already, and want a lush Precision to finish me off (famous last words). Hope you're well mate! Will check some of these places, cheers Si

BEAT THE RED LIGHT

Ah hello mate! Played with last Saturday at Bucks New Uni, we were on before you.....the Hippity Hop band! Unfortunately I only caught your soundcheck cos I had to rush to East London for another gig lol, soundcheck was wicked though!! Si
7. Fake as a fake thing! Si
8. Yes, that would be ace....then you can bring one back for me!.....thanks Si
9. Anyone got any links to US (or UK (not the usuals)) shops that ship overseas with good vintage Fender bass stock? Precisions specifically There was one that was posted here about 3 months ago, but can't remember what it was called Chars Si
10. Try Jon Shuker, he made me a neck for a very reasonable price. I had Binding and Birdseye fingerboard, so yours would probably be a bit cheaper! Si
11. Did you see the article about the P-retro in this months BGM?, or know about it before hand? Have you tried the '64 with rounds in a gigging enviroment? Si
12. I just couldn't put all my faith into in-house monitors, some of the places I've played couldn't handle any type of bass frequency! Rather just cover all bases and take my amp! In-ears are a bit different, but I'd still miss the air being moved behind me! Si
13. For me its not the fact that its collectible, and removing the solder will somehow devalue it. It's that it's a 46 year old bass, sounds like a cool 46 year old bass, so use it as such (with amp and outboard controls ). If I wanted an active bass, I'd buy a MIJ or MIA and put the preamp in that Si
14. Depends what you call 'reasonable'?? You get what you pay for in my experience! Si
15. Clarky, if you don't get alright with the Chiswick one, a very good friend of mine is in Acton, excellent player and even better guy, lemme know if you want his number! I'm pretty sure he does privates, he teaches at one of the schools Si
16. Can't think of anything worse than having no backline! Horrible! Si
17.
Had a comment by PM that the Jamerson tone is what's special about a '64 Precision. Fair point for sure. I guess the obvious question in response is do you think that, were it available at the time, his tone would have been better with a P-Retro? C EDIT. What I mean is do you think that if he had the opportunity to install an on-board preamp, he would have done?
Well, probably not, Jameson strikes me as being a player, not a gear head! Think of all the awesome P players of today, guys like Pino......do you think they have active circuits in their P's? No....they have other basses for that. I mean I'm just playing Devils Advocate, but all I can say is if I were to buy an old Precision (and I am looking), its because it sounds like an old Precision, not because I want a bass with provenance that sounds like a new 'super-precision' If you are intent though, it sounds like it's going to be a case of removing solder, seeing as you can't lift out the whole harness! Oh and an apology, I certainly don't mean to derail this topic, just speaking my mind on the issue I can see the appeal, John's preamps are the best in the business!!! Si
18. But seemingly you are sentimental about the solder, otherwise you'd just do the mod and wouldn't have started a thread about it! lol Si
19. Did Clarky delete his posts? Why don't you go with something outboard? I'm sure John could put you something together using a P-retro circuit Si
20. I go to Steve Lawson when I can, drive from South Bucks to Catford because it's so worth it Plus he does 2 hour lessons, the last time I checked, Dave Marks wouldn't!? Si
21. I got pretty clean sounds very loudly on the 500, just increase the volume the same as the gain, as opposed to boosting gain to get overdrive! Si
22. I think the tuners are early 70's! He does mention that they as well as the strap buttons aren't original. If it was something you wanted to restore with a nice refinish, original tuners, nut, pots etc, you're probably talking an extra grand on top. If all of that gave you a refinish with all original parts '62 for £4k, then that seems about right for a private sale, if it was all original at around 8k (refinish=half off usually). Thats if you're bothered about all that malarky, if it plays and sounds like a dream, then just keep it the way it is! But it would be very cool! Si
23.
Locking-in doesn't necessarily mean always hitting a bass note on a kick drum beat - it's the interplay between the two.
Oh no I completely agree, I suppose the term 'locking in' conjurs up ideas of being constrained, when the interplay is in truth a lot more organic and flexible Si
24.
2) If you're not locked in with the kick, there will be no groove.
Depends on context If you listen to a lot of Nu-Soul, most notably D'angelo's Voodoo album (Questlove & Pino), there's rarely a bass note sitting on a bass drum or snare.....and they groove like a no-ones business!. QL sits way behind on the beat and Pino is almost in another postcode lol Sounds amazing though! Si
25. I always try and listen to the whole kit for sure, including hi-hats obviously. It really gives you an amazing choice of rhythms to choose from and lock in with. Obviously most of the time, kick, snare and hi-hats are the main choice, but theres definitly some times when playing with a tom or a china for example can sound great! Si
