1.
I always thought it was a bit twee and clique-y myself.
Got to agree with the sentiment.... forums can easiliy get too cliquey as it is so it's a no from me. just my 2p...
2.
Garbage! IMO of course! And if that were the case, I think you'd need to look at your EQ settings... even with a J bass and Hartke LH500 (both known to be rather shy of mids) I have no problem whatsoever with hearing myself through my Compact - anywhere on the fretboard. However, when I tried a Genz Benz NX2-212T... mids all gone and poor audibility. Horses for courses, naturally - but to say any BF cab causes lost signal is just wrong (IME).
I'll run and DB750 through DB 10 and 12's and also through Berg Neos 12's. all with tweeters. You need yo be careful of running the tweeters too high as they can get harsh. I don't think the horn units as fitted are that great, tbh and a higher midrange unit sounds a stronger solution.... which is why TKS and Baer are interesting. I use the figure of 2kh as that is typically useable....so quoted specs will/maybe be higher but you need to hear that in context. If someone tunes a cab to be low... that will cost you elsewhere, so, IMO..paper specs become meaningless. Cab makers know this which is why they use cheap horns..in the most part..again, IMO. I have enough highs and presense on an active bass and I really don't need to have to confuse or fight that with the amp as well. EQ should therefore be used minimally and to enhance. If you need to correct it to any degree, you can have too much colour and too many variables elsewhere. You then chasing a sound..and you can be lucky in one room and hopelessly lost in another. For me...because I am very happy with my basses sound...both prety different inn their own way, but their character comes thru straight away. All I need to do is set levels..and we are off. The band mix is sorted ..IMO.. and it is levels only. We are known for a good sound, if I say so myself. All In need a cab to do is reproduce a faithful sound.. I don't say it is pure or flat, but I am up and running in 2 mins. I never need to twiddle knows.. the sound is there. My style may be too fancy/busy/OTT/crap for some... you will hear a note not a thunk or clunck...and I need it get through a loud band situation. So, no I don't need to EQ'ing.... I need cabs that can cut it... and 15's never have for me...I might find the botton end of it ok... and pleasing but everywhere else in the range is too much a compromise. This can be the case with a bassy 410 as well....but you'd get a horn to cover... or hope it would. My fave goto cab atm is a 212 with horn... over 2x210. the 2x112 are only used for their easy carry into some gigs. They will be sold at some point. If this is picky, ( and in this regard, I really am ) then so be it... but I know what I want and how to get it
3.
That's just hilarious. That's like saying if a cab doesn't go lower that 40hz you can't hear a low E.
Go and read that book again... you'll find all you need to 'know' about bass and then write it up here. Some people might even swallow it.
4.
Where???
Not in your pocket Chris, but I like a few trilly bits...
5. Some not very modern sets there...how does that go with a younger audience? I guess these are pub sets?
6. Depends what you play... but for me, I need higher end. The mid that I want can disappear too easily but some horns don't work so well either. Strangely enough... not the greatest fan of the Berg horn, as it happens
7.
To be fair though, how many young, one-man companies have their products regularly displayed on big stages? And aren't a lot of those cabs mainly there because of sponsorship/endorsement deals? Or supplied by the venues themselves? And isn't the largest market of all cab manufacturers the pub/club market? By sales? So it's not really a fair comparison. And of course they're not the only cab around - nobody said they were! But as a relatively new, UK-made product that is trying to be something a little bit different - I think the discussion is justified.
I think you can have a discussion but who needs someone posting another thread about an order they have made and then get a load more chime in and keep the thread live. It wouldn't be so bad that someone is excited about a new cab... but there are just too many.. IMO. You wont find them on stages as they look poor and the music biz can be as vain as any. Plus... you don't need a big low end cab. Why do you think the 810 fridge is so well used? It isn't a complcated cab at all..it is pretty basic...but is easy to mix and doesn't flood the stage. It is a bass monitor.... it can put out decent volume. You have guys moving and rigging bins, they don't need to carry anything..it is all on wheels and load-ins are ramped... They are probably flight cased to boot...adding MORE lbs but weight considerations aren't the factor. People may well be paid to use cabs.... who wouldn't use their power of exposure to cut a deal but it also has to work on a certain level. Pubs may well be a big market.... but where do you see them..?? They seem to do well on here...but I have said before. I could ask 10 bass players I know about BF cabs and I bet at LEAST 8/10 wouldn't know them from Adam...and where do those guys tend to play..?? yep..pubs.

Cones

Just listen to typical 15's, 12 and 10's and then you'll know that cone size have definite bias' I like 10's but have a 212 that really works well. I have other 2x112's which don't cut it..even though many would say they make the best cabs out there.
9.
Correct ... erm ... that was my point! You don't miss a tweeter unless you slap.
Not sure about that.... Anything high up the fretboard gets lost...like slides and trills so you need a cab with more than 2k
10. They aren't the only cab around ..... but there are too many fanboi threads for a product that doesn't really register in the big wide bass world... You don't see it on stages and its market in the pub world. If it serves your purpose then put it on your list. IMO, of course..
11.
DB751 through a pair of GS410's is possibly the best live bass sound I've ever heard
My comment should have been directed at 2xGS112's....which I ran for a yr or so...but not with the 750.
12.
I'd love to try a db750/db410 rig...
I do this with a 750 and 2xDB210's....and the DB212 is a better match for me...and I didn't think I would ever say that... But... since the 750 goes to 2ohms..I can actually run all 3 cabs together.... ho hum...!!
13. GS cabs, for me, are great with new lively strings but not useable once those strings go off their very brightest..which is after one gig. Too bigger a hole for me between cab bias and horn.
14. Anyone we truly nail and it varies on the night
15.
@JTUK - would this be PB by any chance ??
The Brothers Dover
16. ok..I'll bite. since I bang on about presentation or build QC on other cabs.... Not sure the pic/drawing presented in the OP comes across too well... and by that, I mean, I can't tell whether it is a good drawing and representative of the end product or a bad representation...? Other makers would/do get stick for that....but since this is a pic..I assume.. I can't really make a comment on the build quality..but then if a self build, that would, in the most part, be the remit of the cab maker. If I was going for a self build, I would take shoddy cabinet making out of the equation and get someone in who would do it well. Whether that makes the exercise cost effective, would be another issue.
17.
Nothing sounds like an 810. If that's what you need then that's good. .......................... For all it's great tone, the Ampeg 810 is the least heard (by audiences) cab. Every band I've seen using one has been Di'ed through the PA so the audience never hears the cab.
Which is why it is THE stage monitor system benchmark...IMO.
18. I wouldn't go for a bi-amp sub-bass rig myself. Decent enough concept, but doesn't achieve anything useful, IMO. The sound may be ok in itself...but you don't want sub bass on stage. You end up carrying twice the kit for the same volume as a fullrange stack which defeats the object of lightweight cabs. And even if I did want to pursue the bi-amp route, I wouldn't use the GK fudge. You'd want a decent pre ( pref with crossover and stereo outs, into a stereo amp and two cabs.) I did this with a 210 and 115 and it wasn't at all bad...but then the double up on the gear kicked in. and the perceived sound gain was in no way worth the carry. And you are contemplating doing it with cabs who best selling point is the light weight... IMO.
19. Dont mention him to a drummer friend of mine who toured with him the 80's
20. Not sure you can count on hearing it struggle... if the numerous threads about people not being about to hear the cab and off-axis issues. But then saying a cab can take 300w is just as vague... you wouldn't get so many blown speakers if that was the case. IMO
21. Don't do any of them..........they don't fit
22. Bit confused about what you want to pay with that 'wishlist' but assuming around £3k..??? I'd add Sei's and Celinders and a NYC Sadowsky to the Fodera price tag..as well as a Ken Smith... but there can be a huge difference in sounds and vibe from that lot..so that doesn't add up either, IMV. You certainly have to try the one you are serious about....unless you get it cheap enough to sell on for the same money. These basses need to be a fit...and I tried a Matt G recently and altho it was nicely made...totally inappropriate for me in every respect.
23. Deep switches OR too much bass is a tone killer... IMO. I think you need to practice with the sound you use live.
24. Understand weight issues but I can man handle it if I need to... but there are 5 of us in the band and a two man lift on and off stages is easy.... we don't leave anyone to struggle with stuff... or I take a light rig, but not by choice.
25. That's it, Barrie..simple as that. Gareth...as you'd expect, the amp perfectly compliments the cabs.
