1. The 72 J-bass looks great & I love the collection. You appear to have the same problem with Stingrays that I have with P-basses!
2.
So far the main suggestions have beene: Peavey 210TX Ampeg B100-R Fender Rumble 100 The only thing is I haven't seen an Ampeg B100-R on eBay for a while now, but I'll keep looking. @BurritoBass: Thanks for the reassurance, I thought a Mexican was probably fine for him but I know that American Fenders tend to have a better reputation for whatever reason. We're not particularly loud, we play 60s and 70s blues/rock.
You're welcome - the Ampeg BA115 is alright too. I was ready to love the Fender Rumble & was really disappointed. Ampeg are much better with solid state than Fender
3. I reckon you'd get £400 for it - they are great basses
4. I love a bit of 50s rock n roll
5.
I mentioned this to my guitar builder, who suggested that he can get some pickups custom wound to be mid scooped...but is this the answer? Am I simply looking for the holy grail which doesn't exist??
Yes, it's one answer & a good one to boot. Holy Grail... Aren't we all?
6. The amp you suggest is perfectly fine & there is nothing wrong with Mexican Fenders. That amp may be a little quiet if he's playing with a loud band
7.
Dave Marks has the answer: http://www.davemarks.com/ menu YouTube -> Bad Habits for Bass - watch all of these.
Plus one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGZikYZsyNc...feature=channel
8. We did a bad gig in my old punk days when the whole band was drunk. My guitarist snapped a Les Paul and pushed it through a lighting rig. The repair cost him a bottle of whiskey. I threw my P-bass down and kicked it across the stage. It snapped the nut and permanently bent the neck (although I can't tell since the repair!). My pathetic tantrum cost me about £75 and I was on the dole at the time. Lesson learnt. I grew up. A bit.
9. In his defence he doesn't actually say whether the £9765 1979 P-bass actually sold?!?
10.
real bass players dont use picks
I mainly play bass with my fingers actually but I don't like to limit my techniques. The picks were bought by me for playing guitar.
11. The only one you don't seem to have tried is my suggestion of nail polish remover. Grab some off the missus (or a young emo kid!?!) and check it out. It really does work and I've used it on several of my instruments in the past.
12.
When they're properly adjusted and setup they work very well.
Hole in one! Although I only have one on a Gu***r
13. I've bought from EBay before. This guy springs to mind http://shop.ebay.co.uk/merchant/custom_pic..._fromZQQ_ipgZ25
14.
Does the 660 go, then?
It's what I lean towards but that's just my two sense. Keep the others
15. It's not on BUT (& this doesn't make it right!) I don't reckon we could get together more than a handful of gigging musicians on this forum who haven't had similar experiences... and worse!
16. I agree with the above - as a minimum you *may* get away with 100w but it depends how loud the band you join are. One loud drummer or guitarist and you are out the game! To me the whole point of playing an instrument is to play with other musicians
17. Interesting thread and some interesting responses. I agree with a lot of the sentiment here. I don't want to make it in the industry and gave up 10yrs ago but I feel I am making it with music. It's a much happier place to be!
18. No is my answer BUT in the past I've rubbed the top of my screws with a brillo pad and they have fitted much better. Don't know if that may help at all?
19. Bass - A mint all original 50s P-bass Amp - Ampeg SVT3 pro - 610hlf cab A beautiful custom made double bass
20.
They look pretty cool. Does the heavy guage make a big difference? Any sound samples anywhere to show what these sound like?
THe heavy gauge is no problem as they are rubber (any lighter and the neck wouldn't have the required tension. Sound wise Paul McCartney used them at Abbey Road and on the rooftop gig so that would be as good a place as any to start
21. The other option would be Rotosound Trubass black nylon strings. Your bass / pickup will obviously be a factor in the tone but you'll certainly notice a real change with flats or Trubass - it'll get rid of the brightness. From what you say I find Rotosound Trubass are the closest you can get a bass guitar to sound like a double bass. They look a bit different but are good fun.
22.
Black and TBH I think a black pickguard would look great too.
It does but I like to chop & change as it makes my basses look fresher & reduces GAS! At present my bass looks like the attached. I just fancy a change for some gigs...
