1. On behalf of all Johnny Cash fans & country bass players, I'd just like to say listen to some bluegrass players. All the top Nashville bass players are actually serious virtuosos when you see them in soundchecks or just messing around! The PurpleBlob is right - deceptively simple sometimes!?
2. in which case it's one wrong photo that looks like it was uploaded in error. The other headstock photos appear correct
3. I assume this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-precision-bas...id=p3286.c0.m14
4.
Myself, i only play in bands playing original music... and only play music i love to play, however, it'd be nice to play in a function band to make some money on the side.
My Dad was a pro Jazz drummer in the 60s and he wound up playing on tons of stuff he HATED. I've never made it past semi pro but ALWAYS played stuff that reflects where my head is at. I've predominately played in originals bands but when I've played covers they are always songs I really like. I can only think of one jam gig I ever did (in over 20yrs) where I played stuff I didn't like. I'm as enthusiac about music now as when I was a kid. My Dad rarely listens to music now & hasn't owned a drum kit since the 60s. Go figure!
5.
Fender Precision Classic 50s Photos keep them coming...
Mine pre-dates the MIM Classic series and is a modified 20yr old MIJ version of the 50s P-bass but and I also own the early 50s classic series P-bass Both are excellent. Both modified with Seymour Duncan pickups, change of pickguards, ashtray covers and thumb rests.
6. I write my own. I've worked with songwriters in the past who try to dicate what I should do - in which case I try and base what I do on their idea but make it better. For me it's all part of the creative process. That said I don't knock people who do covers and pull off a good bassline exactly. It's all good fun
7. I've just had a cheapie bass imported - no issues. Sound advice on the warranty here. Mine was fine but when you start spending serious cash bear in mind you really do start getting hammered on the charges
8. I've met up with old bands and the ego of the singer (for example) suddenly doesn't matter. I think when it's longer term the old cracks start to appear but for one offs it usually winds up being a laugh. We did some reunion recording which was more fun then gigging. I don't think you'll ever recapture old glories as often singers haven't sung for years etc but it's worth it for having a laugh.
9. 3/4 seems to be the standard. What you are used to aside, you need to think of the practical aspects of transport etc. I have a 3/4 and it takes up a lot of room in the car (I have a medium sized car). Add your other kit and it becomes a factor. With the end pin out & set for the right height for me it's about 7' high (obviously smaller when not in use).
10.
Get some lemon oil on that fingerboard. There was a chap selling a bass banjo locally, could chase up, see where it went. Was made out of a drum.
Interested in the bass banjo if you can do some digging. PM me if there are any developments. These pics are straight out the box so the lemon oil will be happening - I've seen worse so I'm not too worried. It'll look cooler when the fretboard darkens up too!
11.
Very cool Is it louder than a regular acoustic bass guitar?
No, it's not. It's quite unique sounding as stated. It has some volume to it but isn't all that loud. Good enough though.
12. I've owned a few Epiphone basses in the past and must be one of the few people that didn't mind the neck dive. I've known of the old trick of replacing the strap button to the neckplate for some time but never bothered.
13. I did a search on these a while ago and found we'd only had a couple of threads. Last months Bass Guitar Magazine had Les Claypool with a couple of bass oddities - a banjo bass and a resonator bass. Whilst not being a Primus fan, I was impressed with Les Claypool's taste in junk basses. Spending a couple of hours searching around Google and nothing. Ozark and Johnson has brief runs in the UK but I guess it was too gimmicky. Anyhow, I found a US seller based in Houston knocking them out around £150 so thought I'd get one. I checked the tone via YouTube... Amazingly for a cheapie it has a great tone, quite unique as you'd expect. It's neck is straight and the frets are well finished. A bit of hiss in the background with the pickup but what do you expect for a cheap bass? I'm really impressed. I especially like the sound when played with a pick - sounds very clacky and punchy. Now if I can just find that banjo bass... *pics of mine attached. I assume it's from the Bluegrass Republic of China (or similar) although there is no logo or no made in markings. I'd be surprised if it was assembled in Texas
14.
Ampeg SVT Classic 1x15 cab for sale. Just recently fitted with brand spankers Eminence Kappa Pro. The box is a bit tatty coz it's been well gigged. £150. Would consider a straight swap for a 2x10 cab.
PM sent (or should I say I'm doing it once I post the fact that I've sent one!?!)
15. Awesome - I love these cross over basses. I'd love a banjo bass.
16. There's loads of open mic that centres around 12 bar which is a good place to start. As a frightening point I was once in a band that went for 3.5yrs and only ever managed 7 rehearsals - if that doesn't test your ability to wing it I don't know what will! I'm a big fan of Open Mic and they are always a great place to network
17. I think your situation can be daunting. My band (& favourite one ever at the time) folded a couple of years ago. I've kept my options open and played with a couple of groups, only to bounce right back. Different bands carry different levels of commitment and you may find a less busy band that allows you to take a breather but keep your hand in. Although it can seem like a lousy time, actually it's quite exciting really
18. Welcome - nice to hear Neil Young get a mention on these pages
19. Played Windsor in the park by the Thames. House amp was a Laney that I had to play around with to get a half decent sound. Band played well and we sold a bunch of CDs that we got to sign for the audience (ironically it was only the singer from the band who was on them but they wanted us all!). A lovely hot day for an outdoors show.
20. Perhaps they are not known for their bass range then!? I was one of the 64 views. The only thing I remember about Randall is that in the 1980s Def Leppard used their stuff. I gather they are quite a pro company but I've never come across the bass range. Hopefully my vague ramblings might get the ball rolling....
21. Wow! Some of these posts are really frightening! I'd say I buy a fair bit of gear but I wouldn't say I have a problem - I recycle a lot too so it doesn't build up. That said perhaps not acknowledging a problem could mean I have a problem? I play a few instruments so it probably looks worse than it is. If you play stuff I don't think it is a problem, it's when the collection is just stored that there is a problem.
22. Depends what you play. The TDPRI is great for telecasters and I'm sure there are other sites for other guitars but teles is my thing so that's the only one I've used. I know of a Gretsch site, a Les Paul site and a Strat site. There doesn't seem to be a good all round guitar site though
23. Hmmmn, old thread resurected. As I missed it first time around... There is little difference between what I wear on & off stage but I do dress like I'm in a band. I'd describe my look as 30 something alt.country musician. I like bands who appear to live it rather than dress up just to for the night.
24. I've worked with one busy drummer (for years as it happens) & I just held back on the bass. I think it depends on the style of music you play but I've always looked for Charlie Watts over Keith Moon.
