I think audiences respond well to stuff they know. So it's classic cheese. We do a bunch of Neil Diamond stuff that goes down great - I've never heard anyone else do this in pub gigs but the reaction is incredible.

Harley Benton are of course Thomann's own brand. My only experience of there's is a Harley Benton acoustic that was so warped and had an action of an almost an inch at the 12th fret that it was basically good for firewood. Kind of off putting.

But he's got 100% feedback from the [b]one[/b] time he used EBay 12 months ago!

Someone on Talkbass talking rubbish? I find that very hard to swallow! In some circles (amongst 5 string players for example!?!) this may be the case but you have to ask yourself why is it whenever you go into a shop, flick through a tuition book or see a band on TV it's [i]usually[/i] a 4 string bass / player.

I agree with the earlier post which says change what you play, pedals shouldn't be relied on too heavily. I think you'll find it'll wake the band up a bit (& I say that not having heard you).

I mic my amp up. One thing which amazes me about this site is that nobody ever mentions kit shares. I find with bass all too often there is a house backline or a kit share which prevents me from using my own gear. Granted, I could always take my own amp but as bass amps aren't the lightest I tend to go with that arrangement

I'd love to play the US! Sadly I can think of a million excuses why I can't drop everything and go on tour abroad. Still if they are genuine it's a great opportunity. I don't doubt I'll get to play a show in the US at some point in my life

On behalf of all Johnny Cash fans & country bass players, I'd just like to say listen to some bluegrass players. All the top Nashville bass players are actually serious virtuosos when you see them in soundchecks or just messing around! The PurpleBlob is right - deceptively simple sometimes!?

My Dad rarely listens to music now & hasn't owned a drum kit since the 60s. Go figure!

I write my own. I've worked with songwriters in the past who try to dicate what I should do - in which case I try and base what I do on their idea but make it better. For me it's all part of the creative process. That said I don't knock people who do covers and pull off a good bassline exactly. It's all good fun

I've just had a cheapie bass imported - no issues. Sound advice on the warranty here. Mine was fine but when you start spending serious cash bear in mind you really do start getting hammered on the charges

I've met up with old bands and the ego of the singer (for example) suddenly doesn't matter. I think when it's longer term the old cracks start to appear but for one offs it usually winds up being a laugh. We did some reunion recording which was more fun then gigging. I don't think you'll ever recapture old glories as often singers haven't sung for years etc but it's worth it for having a laugh.

3/4 seems to be the standard. What you are used to aside, you need to think of the practical aspects of transport etc. I have a 3/4 and it takes up a lot of room in the car (I have a medium sized car). Add your other kit and it becomes a factor. With the end pin out & set for the right height for me it's about 7' high (obviously smaller when not in use).

I've owned a few Epiphone basses in the past and must be one of the few people that didn't mind the neck dive. I've known of the old trick of replacing the strap button to the neckplate for some time but never bothered.

I did a search on these a while ago and found we'd only had a couple of threads. Last months Bass Guitar Magazine had Les Claypool with a couple of bass oddities - a banjo bass and a resonator bass. Whilst not being a Primus fan, I was impressed with Les Claypool's taste in junk basses. Spending a couple of hours searching around Google and nothing. Ozark and Johnson has brief runs in the UK but I guess it was too gimmicky. Anyhow, I found a US seller based in Houston knocking them out around £150 so thought I'd get one. I checked the tone via YouTube... Amazingly for a cheapie it has a great tone, quite unique as you'd expect. It's neck is straight and the frets are well finished. A bit of hiss in the background with the pickup but what do you expect for a cheap bass? I'm really impressed. I especially like the sound when played with a pick - sounds very clacky and punchy. Now if I can just find that banjo bass... *pics of mine attached. I assume it's from the Bluegrass Republic of China (or similar) although there is no logo or no made in markings. I'd be surprised if it was assembled in Texas

There's loads of open mic that centres around 12 bar which is a good place to start. As a frightening point I was once in a band that went for 3.5yrs and only ever managed 7 rehearsals - if that doesn't test your ability to wing it I don't know what will! I'm a big fan of Open Mic and they are always a great place to network
